Since I have only dabbled in the last several TLPs, I never got to a point that I was into alchemy, or partaking of the results. Am I correct that alchemy will initially be limited to the original alchemy system, and the really handy distillates won't be available until later?

Well I can only speak for agnarr but up to ldon we have the super op distillate X. Early alchemy has conc pots which are too cheap not to use and kilvas do which are excellent for groups. On mangler the portal pots are also great. Ivu pots are basically mandatory since everyone lives in lguk.
