Nope he's just complaining about the limited ability to get around faster with a persona. Say you're an iksar warrior and you want to go to commonlands.

You would go to cabilis, switch to your persona that is bound in freeport, then you origin or die and now switch back to the warrior when you're in freeport and bam you're across the world. If you want to go back to field of bone you head to a safespot in a town. Change back to your iksar and origin to get back to cabilis.

It's really not that useful except maybe at launch. If you have the expansion it's worth it to make a couple alts from cities where you would like to get there quickly.

You don't have to level to 5, just talk to a guard he will send your persona to its bind point.

I think there's a lot of generalizations in here, many of them derogatory - unless there's a level of satire and sarcasm that is flying way over my head, and tbh that's totally possible.

For example, I feel like I fall into all of those (except 4), and none of those all that the same time.

I'm a nostalgia chaser. I played the game in 1999, and stayed with it through Scars of Velious. Left I guess in 2001 (I'm pretty sure that's when Velious came out?), no higher than level 20 on my Druid and never having done any end game content, and eventually got wrapped up in other games (Morrowind, Star Wars Galaxies, TES, Fallout, City of Heroes, Warhammer Online, etc.) and didn't come back until... it's been a few years ago now when I came back because I saw it was free and was curious about a nostalgia trip. Was thrown off by the Crescent Reach start, and the entire Crescent Reach / Blightfire Moors start. It wasn't nostalgic enough. Game was enjoyable enough, but wasn't EQ anymore. Didn't last long.

Learned about TLP's, came back for Aradune, and got myself a little heavier into the EQ experience, getting to genuinely go through all the original zones again and get my nostalgia kick. Leveled higher this time, somewhere in the 40's with my Shadow Knight, and honestly probably learned the game a bit deeper than I ever did in the classic days as a teenager in high school playing his first MMO. Certain things clicked a bit better for me, enough that when I decided to let my sub lapse, I'd still create other characters on the free servers, getting various characters to the 20's - 40's, including digging my original Druid out of my old account (still wish I could account transfer characters to bring him over to my main account, but ultimately that's more of an OCD thing)

Now, in preparation for Teek, a friend and I have been going back to live servers, playing new characters, and I'm now the highest I've ever been, getting my current Shadow Knight to 55. I'm getting deeper into live mechanics more than I ever have, and am finding a lot of things about the current live experience that I like and may even prefer over the TLP / classic experience. Of course, there are still a lot of things I also prefer about the TLP / classic experience as well that I am looking forward to with Teek, and overall probably still prefer the classic experience, but also greatly enjoy the live and modern experience as well.

I've never been in a guild in EQ. I've never raided. I either solo, molo, or small group with friends or randoms that I encounter. I may AFK for a time, because I am a grown man now with a career, a wife, and while I don't have kids, I do have other home responsibilities like a mother that I caretake for, but typically speaking, my game time is my game time, and my attention is on the game. I'm far from a power gamer, as evidenced by never reaching higher than the 55 that I currently am, but when I am playing, I don't necessarily prioritize top optimization, but I do want to have some manner of efficiency in leveling, gearing, generating revenue, etc.

I don't box, truebox or otherwise, and I hate the entire concept of it to be honest, but I also have no desire to report people or prevent them from doing it. I don't have to like it, but quite frankly it's none of my business. I've never touched a Krono in my life, and don't even know how to Krono farm even if I wanted to, because as far as I know they don't even exist in game and need to be bought, and if I'm gonna buy Krono, I may as well just buy a damn month subscription because it's actually cheaper that way.

I'm definitely not a no-lifer, as I don't think it's even possible to be considered a no-lifer when I've been away for probably the better part of 20 years or so. I don't consider myself a casual gamer by any means, but I'm also not a hardcore power gamer either. I don't think your 4 group theory really works out to well. But who knows, maybe I'm just the awkward outlier.

EQ doesn't have 20-40 years left, but I don't think it's going anywhere anytime soon.

Why do you have to level to 5? Dying works just as well and works at level 1. Dying doesn't have a cool down like origin does, so it works even better.

I'm looking forward to playing around with personas. Current plan is 16 personas built up over time. 16 different clases, 16 different cities. There will be 2 cities I won't be using as there are 18 cities in total. There will be 4 which will be have to wait for later in game, beastlord in Shir Val, Monk in Crescent Reach, Zerker in Grobb and Wizzy in Rathe Mountains. Plan will be to hopefully level each persona via a different route.....not sure it will work, but I am a questaholic and there are a lot of newbie quests I've never done.

Having all classes on one account on the same server is something I have been wanting to try for a long time. Finally I can make it happen. I was very frustrated in early EQ only being allowed 8 classes.

Starting from zero will hopefully help stop the hoarding. With Teek being Free Trade, hopefully I can off load without destroying some gear, which will be hand when leveling. Not having enough inventory space is a big concern.

7 months till the next expansion comes out so plenty of time to mess around on Teek, while still raiding on live. Then it will be a couple of months of playing both, then back to focussing on Teek personas.

    Initial 3 will be
    Chanter - DE
    Shaman - Iksar
    Rogue - gnome of course

Once tradeskills are all covered, I'll see what class/race/city I want to do next.

This TLP I want to do it all!

Posts like this show how desynced are devs from the player reality, TLP and Live. I am not surprised, tbh, we have had enought proff. Just check Live content.

Yinla, we have been over this. No Gnomes! I mean choosing rogue class in a TLP is by itself a knee to the family jewels, and you are doubling down by choosing Gnome (which should he a KOS NPC race level 1 mob in EQ, being a playable race is a travesty since 1999) which is basically a sledgehammer to aforementioned jewels)!

    GNOMORE! :p

Personas discourage the use of less useful newbie areas and lowbie dungeons. Why would anyone XP in Blackburrow or Crushbone when they can just Persona to Cab and walk to Kurn's.Those types of zones generally only get used around launch because travel times are too high before Druids/Wizards are high level and capable of porting people around.
  10. Demetri Augur

Don't even need to do that, making the persona spawns it where it normally would on initial login.

I won't attempt to guess a timeline. But I don't think EQ will truly die for a very very long time. The game will be kept alive in unofficial server form long after official servers get turned off. It's the first real successful mmorpg in most peoples books and the first 3d mmorpg. One of us enthusiast nerds will keep it alive practically forever if I had to guess.

It's definitely staying around perpetually with private servers, but I'm not even sure the official servers are in danger of dying off anytime soon. The game is 25 years deep and still getting yearly expansions, new servers, and still making profit. I also hesitate to guess a timeline, but it's far from imminent.

EQ Players have the weirdest fixation on their time being wasted.

Goes both directions too, half the time they complain about nothing to do while also doing everything they can to minimize wide swathes.

Humans are certainly a strange species that way. (Of which I'm not saying I don't have my own oddities FWIW - IMO the rare person who has zero oddities is really the least "normal")

there is a middle ground between instant gratification and a 45 minute boat ride. It's too late for EQ to change any of this obviously.

I never played wizard or druid, but I know in back in WoW when the very first expansion came out, two of my Mage class abilities were basically made obsolete (teleports and the good water). It really bothered me
  19. fransisco Augur

Its bad game design to have something like ports (if they are the only method of fast travel) gated behind a certain class.
