Returning Monk without a clue

    Hey all!

So like many, I'm back after a long (vacation?) to play the game I love once more. When I left EQ, around seven years ago, my Monk was about level 32. Now that I was recently able to make it a heroic character, I've added to my confusion as what to do next. Where do I start with my 85 Monk? What gear should I have on the radar now, and later? How are we mitigating aggro now? I bet my funji tunic isn't as useful as it used to be...I know I got some gear in a heroic starter kit but, is it legit?

All in all, I would love to hear opinions on; where to start, must have gear (now and later), AA's and skills that need to be maxed ASAP, and general friendly advice. I look forward to spending time in Norrath once again and re-experiencing the world of one of my favorite games.

Thank you in advance for your reply's.

If you have All Access, then your first "adventure' should be as follows:

get a Journeyman I Tank merc (if you want someone to take agro) or Cleric merc if you want healing. I would personally go with the healer at this level since you will be able to dishout more DPS than the tank, thus agro would usually be on you anyway.

Once you have your merc, go to The Ferrott the Dream (use the stone in POK). Once there, there is an NPC who will give you the quest to "earn" your J5 merc.

Once upgraded, look at the map and the zone guide to find appropriate zones for your level. Do your daily's from Franklin Teak and his brother both in POK next to the guild hall portal.

As to gear, the Heroic 85 gear is good, but be aware that one of the pieces (I think its a bracer) which will damage your friends when it procs. Not sure why, but there was a thread a while back about it. Anyway this gear will suffice until you can upgrade to group gear and eventually raid gear (if you raid). If you are on FV, then you can buy group and )I think) raid gear for PP. (Krono's are you friend if you need buquo PP, but you have to be willing to pa $$ for them )

    Good Luck and welcome back

If you used heroic on monk you automatically have the quest for the Journeyman V mercenary, Alt + Q will bring up the quest window and it will show you quest steps once you are in the level 85 Feerrott ( Get there by taking Ogguk stone in PoK and choose dream when prompted). I'd persoanally grab a tier 1 journeyman healer and go straight to that task after setting up your User Interface.

Now to help your dps you can /autoskill kick, and /autoskill tiger claw, removing the need to have those two skills on your main hotbar. The kick will auto hit flying kick and tiger claw every time up during combat and is really nice for higher levels.

I multibind some skills from my main bar to my "E" key and that is main spam, then manually add in other skills during combat, and discs are there to use...use them all the time if you know there are no named mobs you're saving them for...Heel of XXX (rapid kick till you get heel line), Speed Focus, Crystalpalm, Scaled Fist. Hit drunken Monkey before popping a main disc.

Multibinds are Calanin's synergy, stunning kick, banestrike, flying kick, tigerclaw (both not required anymore with/autoskill) and others I can't remember heh.

Your absolute best pulling took is your Echo line, which mezzes up to 5 or 6 mobs then you can use a throwing item or distant strike AA to pull a single from the mezzed group. Rest auto clear agro after it breaks. Now Echo is line of sight based so say you have a group of 3 mobs and theres a tree inbetween you and them....make it where you see 2 of the 3 and other is hiddin behind tree and echo, 1 will auto pull 2 will mez cause the one wasn't in line of sight.

Now get to Feerrott and do that mercenary quest and destroy those mobs! Once done you dismiss old merc, go back to pok and get new one Journeyman V level...and it will rock. Hope this helps!

    Good afternoon all!!

Thanks so much for all of your help and suggestions! I don't think I recognize Multibinds; how would I set those up in game play? Is there a specific window for that or are you meaning using social buttons with the doability # triggers?
  5. Funk Augur

You would Alt+O to pull up options, keys tab, then you can assign/change keybinds there, and can assign multiple hotbar buttons to one key press that way.
  6. Talonthalis Elder

Thanks for the quick response! I'll check into that tonight and find a key that is rarely used on the keyboard. I can see a big benefit for using the multibind technique.

As for gear: is there anything specific I should keep on the horizon that's been added? 1hb vs 2hb? Or even clicky items that have become a monk must have? That way I can put a longer term plan together after my J5 merc.

One other thought: are the Franklin Teak missions solo-able or will I need a group beyond my merc?

Thanks again, everyone, for your help. I can't wait to get back to it!
  7. Talonthalis Elder

Hey all! It's me again. So i have been doing the above suggested and have my new Merc (which rocks!) Does anyone have a good combination of AA's vs Combat abilities? There are so many of each at this level that it's almost analysis paralysis! After a while, it feels like I'm just hitting buttons to hit buttons and watch my Stamina drop. Are there combinations or specific AA's/Combat Abilities that are tantamount to a normal attack run or Named fight?

Thanks again for all of your help! At level 87 and rising!

And to slip this in quick: how are Monks, with newer gear and the latest expansions getting Endurance back now? Any tricks/tips/potions/procs?

Use the Autogrant button (press v and in top right should be a little check box that states Auto grant AA. Check the box then log out to character select then log back it. It will give you all the AAs for you class upto your level. Then only ones you need to manually pick would be the trade skill ones and your mercenary ones and some of the special ones which are mainly for fun.

Gear-wise, the stuff you got when you went heroic is fine for now. Far as upgrades, most armors these days follow a pattern of getting a generic drop, and then converting them to class-specific. Example: on bazaar you might see Fear Touched armor that costs a fair chunk but carries no stats. You buy a class-specific box in Shard's Landing for about 11kpp (only need to buy once) combine fear touched stuff in it and get your armor piece. Look up Boreal ... of the Unwavering. Great upgrade for when you hit 92. And if you do t2/t3 content in RoF, you can upgrade your Boreal stuff. Before that, if you do content in House of Thule (which starts in Feerrott Dream) and earn faction and dream motes, you can barter those for pretty decent items and augs - and that besides the stuff you get as drops.
  11. Scorrpio Augur

Oh, and if you are on your original account, type /veteran to set your veteran status. That might get you some fairly nice rewards, including some rather convenient special AAs. Type /claim to see what you are eligible for. Might be some good stuff there.

just keep going until you need upgrades (or are maxed), most monks will tell you to build your augs with dex. 2bh vs dw I believe 2hb is both higher damage and better survivability atm. for clickies I would recommend getting:

http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=84895 or http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=104784-lev clickies that can be bought with db cash that you get for free if you have a gold account
http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=97281 (Primary Anchor Transport Device)-only if you're in a guild, can also get secondary if you want
http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=78799 (Baron Yosig's Skeleton)-Mandatory for anyone with good taste imo
http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=113371 (Blood Drinker's Coating)-2 minute uptime 10 minute cooldown 1% life leech, great for tanking when you're burning
http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=117010 (for overhaste, any will do though)

    Time Investment
http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=117056 (Staff of Viral Flux)-bar none best pulling tool in the game (just doesn't split the mobs for you)
http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=28461 (Lizardscale Plated Girdle)-can just settle for pots as it can be quite difficult to get
http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=33043 (Transcended Fistwraps of Immortality)-adds a weak spinstun proc that never actually stuns anymore and increases max hp by 25%, great for tanking
http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=35339 (Fiercehand Shroud of the Focused)-separate timer from modern bps, dispels only beneficial effects, easy to where the largest hurdle is faction
http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=67900 (Hardened Energeiac Leather Tunic)-same timer as modern bps, dispels only beneficial effects, Solteris is a blast and you get flagged to be able to buy metal power sources anyway, take a friend
http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=53134 (Mist-Blessed Leather Tunic)-has its own timer from everything else, TSS group bp, dispels only beneficials but also the weakest
    Limited Time (usually anni)
    http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=123362 (Drunkard's Stein)-short cast time/short cooldown pok portal
http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=116717 (Diplomatic Papers)-great for tanking when your defensive disc is down
http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=123277 (Necromantic Dragon Bone)-nice for generating aggro quickly, not too great otherwise
http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/spell.html?spell=39524 (Bottled Essence of Vex)-20k cone AoE, nice for multiple pulls if used correctly, kinda hard to use sometimes
http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=103710 (Ring of the Ancients)-shrink clicky

    Rare Drops
http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=73052 (Crumblewidget's Death Imitator)-IVU clicky, will probably have to settle for potions (http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=56184)
http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=50867 (Mask of Vanishing)-invisibilty clicky, should be supplemented by http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=2492

in general, you'll need a group for ones at the level it suggests+3 depending on gear

killing spree and Breather/Respite/Reprieve/that line where you can only use outside of combat (just use between pulls)
    Funk likes this.
  13. Talonthalis Elder

Hey all! Just thought I'd post again and ask what you all thought of the updates and removal of "mash" keys? What things have been made easier and how have you adjusted?
  14. Funk Augur

Agree 110%! Classic Iksar Skele with monk moves $$

And I still have a multibind key I mash I just have Round kick and kick available if I want to stun something or snare something...which is basically never.
  15. Talonthalis Elder

Speaking of Mash keys i'm starting to wonder if one that i made was a bad idea. This one covers the 30 second abilities of:
    *Drunken Monkey Style
    *Seven Step Pattern
    *Cloud of FIsts
    *Veilwaker's Synergy

As long as they are on different timers, these don't cancel each other out do they? On longer Discs, I see the timer bar for the Disc counting down, but with these I'm not seeing that happen.
