Cannot Reproduce Resizable BAR (smart access memory) causes massive fps decrease

Hunted around for a long time to narrow down what the issue was with my new system getting massive dips in FPS depending on draw distance and what's on the screen. In kelethin on yelinak TLP, if i turned my draw distance up to max, looking towards the PoD lift coming from the bank, my FPS would dip down to 10-20 range.
    Hardware:
Ryzen 5700x, AMD 6900XT, 16gb ddr4 3600 ram, running EQ off an ssd
Finally figured out that turning OFF resizable BAR got my fps to increase to at least 60fps in that same spot.

Discussed this on the official discord, was told I should post here to let the team know this was happening.

I agree that this would be nice to see addressed. The whole point of buying a newer computer is to have a better gaming experience with it. Obviously the hardware that has this functionality should easily able to play EQ well, even hardware that came out years before it is able to do so.

But when a person buys or builds a new computer with these kinds of components, they are not buying it just for everquest in most cases. The end result of this is that Steeferino would have to reboot their computer, change settings in their bios in order to play everquest with decent performance. And then reboot and change the settings whenever they wanted to play other games at the full potential of their hardware.

I'm no expert on the topic, but these links makes me think it's not even exclusive to amd components:

I've seen some other posts that indicates that some people might not even have the ability to disable it:

I too have this problem. Please take a look.

My Main computer also has this problem. The issue is terrible in kunark zones like emerald jungle. It is almost unplayable if i look directly into the trees, i have to run around looking at the ground like its 1999 again.
I also have an issue were my video card driver freezes and sometimes it recovers after my system hangs up for a minute, but rarely requires a reboot. Very annoying. Ive played many other newer and older games and never experienced this issue. I have a Ryzen 5800, with AMD 6800XT.

I have this problem, please look into it. this will be a more common setting on people's pcs

This is still a problem. the future is resizeable bar/smart access memory.

As of yet, I haven't had issues. I'm seeing great framerates pretty much everywhere when 3-boxing with the following setup:

    i7 11700
RTX 3600 12GB, Resizeable BAR: Yes
    16GB DDR4
    PCIe 3rd gen M.2
Single install directory for all simultaneous accounts

I do get pretty extreme GPU utilization (70%) while in the lobby though-- even with player, merc, and pet models turned off. (3 accounts)

I also noticed that having Resizeable BAR on caused me some terrible lag (AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT). As a workaround, setting UseLitBatches to FALSE in eqclient.ini seemed to help/fix the issue, even with Resizeable BAR on.
    Code:
    UseLitBatches=FALSE

I have extrem poor FPS in some zones.. especially in Plane of Knowledge (10-15fps) also in that jungle before City of Mist, etc etc..

    Shadows off.
    Draw distance on 35%
Tried all settings on the lowest and on highest, no different on the FPS-side.

    RX 5700.
    5600X.
    32GB RAM 3600mhz.
    1TB nvME.
    Win 10.
    Samsung 240hz monitor 32" 1440P.

I tried it all, game just refuse to run smooth.

I built a new computer a couple of months ago, but I finally got around to getting a new GPU. I had been using a 1080GTX which does not support resizable bar of course. I was mulling over whether or not I wanted an AMD or an Nvidia for a new card, and for reasons completely unrelated to EQ (obviously) I went with a 4090.

    7800x3d, 2x16 ddr5 @6000mhz, x670e extreme mb, nvme pcie4 ssd, rtx 4090

Installed it today, resizable bar is definitely enabled, and I've made no setting changes in EQ. Performance in EQ was flawless before the recent GPU upgrade, and it still is. I tried everything I could do to get bad performance in EQ, including the run that was mentioned in the email and as expected, my computer just laughs at the game entirely. It did before with the 1080gtx, and it still does now.

I was really worried about this topic because it would be annoying as heck to have to keep changing the setting whenever I played EQ.

I'm not sure why some others are having an issue and I'm not. I thought at first it was because I definitely don't play eq in high res, but I switched to playing at 4k for a little while...and performance was still as I expected.

Just curious... Windows 10 or 11? Home or Pro? Graphics OEM or NVidia base drivers? Driver date?

The underlying problem has probably been fixed (months ago!), but you could just have a fluke going on.

I'm confused by your post, I'm not having any performance issues in EQ. I was worried I would because of what others had said, but everything's peachy.

I realize you're not having any issues. However, in case other people discovering this thread were having the issue it would be helpful to know your situation's details so they could compare to theirs. Just data points for comparison purposes is all I was after.

Here's my assessment. Across this post, and other forum posts, the independent variable appears to be that AMD graphics card users are having the issue with resizable BAR, while Nvidia users are not.

Additionally, UseLitBatches=TRUE by itself creates an increase in clip plane distance, which explains slow downs for some users in locations such as Kelethin. However, I'd expect the primary culprit is not only clip plane distance, but improper interactions with AMD cards and Daybreak implementation of lit batches with AMD drivers. If this is the case, the devs should set this flag to FALSE for AMD graphics cards (or something else to mitigate the issue).

In my case, I have a Nvidia 4090 RTX overclocked to +250mhz core, and +1400mhz memory. Also running a 7950X OC'd to 5.875ghz, DDR5 OC'd to CAS28, and a new T700 PCIE 5.0 SSD on Windows 11 Pro. Running just under 1440P in windowed mode.

I get right around 140FPS looking across Kelethin with UseLitBatches set to TRUE. With it set to FALSE, FPS increases to around 150FPS. Being that clip plane visually decreases, this would explain the FPS increase (clip plane decrease) in my case. Further, FPS does not appear to be impacted in locations where clip plane is not able to be utilized, which indicates to me that the extension of the clip plane is the primary and only driver of FPS differences on my Nvidia card. For AMD cards, perhaps FPS differences is due not only to the clip plane extension but also a poor or improper implementation of lit batches by Daybreak.

Yes, it seems to only effect AMD CPu, but also has an issue with AMD video cards, as i use an AMD CPU, but an nvidia GPU and i do not have this issue.
  17. Lodestar The Undefeated

    *Only effects AMD GPUs.

AMD CPUs do not appear to be related to the issue based on the sample information already available. We both have an AMD CPU (along with multiple other posters in and out of thread) and have no issues. Not to mention, lit shader batches are a GPU function, not a CPU function.

Not much to contribute but I also have the above mentioned issues with FPS dropping in long draw distance zones after getting a new PC. Specs are: AMD Ryzen 7 5700G processor and a Radeon 6600XT GPU. Was not an issue on my old computer which was an 11 yr old Intel processor and a GTX 1060.

If AMD GPU users are lucky, this will just get fixed as result of the DirectX 11 upgrade later this year.

Otherwise, this is a critical issue that Daybreak needs to do something about for AMD GPU users.
