Mage pets

Favorite duo a decade ago was mage/cleric. So easy for me to box because cleric just keeps mage pet tarageted and spams complete heals

How are mage pets these days? Does it change through the expacs?

anyone have insight on how the mage/cleric team would do through the eras of teek’s expacs?

Pets have been boosted so many times over the years. you wont need to spam C-heals on them.
just keep them buffed and help nuke the mobs.
Personally I prefer Mage / Druid but Cleric also has good CC spells that mages lack (Calm, Root, etc) so would not be a bad combo to do.

    Copy! Thanks for the answer!

Druid does sound good. Ports, track, snare, animal charm, plus some heals

My other thought was shaman. I don’t know how important slow is through the games evolutions of expacs

My thought was that the cleric would be able to heal through bigger pulls(since the team has no split puller) and harder hitting mobs(having no slow)

I would like to be able to take down some tough mobs when i come across named and whatnot

pet tanking ability varies throughout the eras. IIRC there have been nerfs/buffs throughout the years. I wanna say they struggle somewhere between PoP-TBS then get revamped in SoF.

I have a cleric and mage on mischief. Clerics remain strong throughout the eras and never really have a "down" period. Although it's kind of a bummer when mercs come out because they trivialize the cleric role in group content to an extent. If you don't want to raid as a cleric, might be better off with a shaman long term.

With mages you'll have a rough time during the 70 Meleequest era (OOW-TBS). Class balance is a joke. DPS will be underwhelming until SoF.

Mage pets have ups and downs. They do good til PoP. Then GoD the random pet summon pet is pretty OP. Then they dip off til TSS in there somewhere. At current end game they are stupid OP.

what does mage pet hps like compared to player tank?

my thought was using damage shields and what not to do most of the damage while taking advantage of the efficient complete heal from the cleric. will this combo be able to handle some named mobs and whatnot through the eras? or will not having slow and some of those other tools hurt in the end?

clerics actually have some good pulling tools. calm /pacify is great and if that does not work, pull group, have cleric root one and have mage CoTH them to camp which wipes agro and wait till the non rooted go home for easy single pull.

My last mage played from level one up without a high level assist was back on mischief. So they may have patched pets to make them better, but I doubt it since the whole reason they were nerfed was because of forum crying. Mage pets are okay on a new TLP but only because of the spell smoothing. Pets are far weaker than they were at their prime and die fairly easy. The greatest let down I have had on a TLP was how weak my epic mage pet was.

That said, due to spell smoothing, you will get your water pet way earlier than you used to when spells were every four or five levels. So, the water pet you get at level 2 is really the one you should be getting at level 4. This pattern continues. This lets the pet tank and dps okay for a while, but they do lack at the higher levels when mobs are hitting for a lot more.

Where mages are better at than other casters is in a group setting. You can provide some constant damage when you run out of mana.

Sadly, EQ is pretty much monk land for most of the life of a TLP.

It is a hard call which priest to pair with a mage. Druid adds long lasting snare, ports, and 2nd best healing, good hp buffs, aoe lull outdoors, and SOW. Cleric adds best HP/AC buffs, decent pulling with lull line, and rez. Shaman adds slow, a second weaker pet, great dots, sow. Personally, I always lean cleric but that is because I despise needing a rez.

Mage / Shaman is a great combo. Slow makes your pet tank a lot of stuff it can't with just cleric, in later expansions. That, and Shaman get stronger over expansions also.

Mage pets can tank the group game content fairly well, as long as you are limited to single targets OR are after blue cons and lowers. The longer you play, the more necessary slow will become to have them tank efficiently on your even and yellow cons.

For this reason I strongly recommend shaman over cleric. If you plan on playing far enough, you will eventually get healer mercs which are functionally a cleric, so they can compliment your duo with additional buffing and healing at that time.

Also yes pets go through stages. The epic pet you get in kunark is great, until you realize you are still using it 2 expansions later in luclin, which becomes a real slog for this kind of playstyle. The level 70 era suffers the same as you get a pet in OOW but you are still stuck using the same one 3 expansions later in PoR. Once you get SoF, pets get massively better and can often tank some of the harder group hunt mobs better than a lesser geared tank class can(except Underfoot because that expansion needs a tank)

    I had thought about shaman!

When compared to a mage pet and a player tank, how would a hp/ac geared shaman tank using slow for threat gen? What if sham were To tank for the mage during some expacs?

I was also thinking of doing sham/dru. Using sham to dps slow and tank. Dru for heals and dots, but this also depends on sham being able to tank

Pets don't tank as well on TLP as they do on live. My magician alts (haven't mained one since....Torvonilous) usually tank for the pet, and sit and bandage and regen mana while bandaging. At least in velious. by the time Luclin lands, the pet tanking ability improves enough to let them tank. Its like a debuff they added thats bad in classic, less bad in kunark, less bad in velious..etc to LDON where its removed I think.

Mage and Necro pets have defenses nerfed until I think Luclin on TLP servers. Their attack damage is not changed, however. The main reason Mage pets are good is they summon as yellow con (above level) at lower levels. Eventually they stop doing this and settle into the blue con level and then they aren't that strong.

Druid or Cleric are great but don't forget the Shaman can help too. Especially when ADPS becomes a thing for the mage pet.

I've 2 boxed mage/druid on a TLP, it's great. Having sow/snare alone is almost worth it by itself. Ports are very handy on a TLP, less so now that persona exists, but still nice to have. Druid is a great compliment to any caster. You don't actually need cleric heals/buffs to keep a mage pet alive. Druid does just fine heal wise, and the extra utility is well worth the trade off IMO.

Never a mistake to level a cleric, and you'll be fine if you do so.

would shaman have more to offer the mage over a druid?

who did you play more on your druid/mage combo
  17. Zansobar Augur

I would pretty much always pick a shaman over a druid and with personas even more so. Persona switching to get around the world reduces the value of druid porting and shaman are better in every other area.
  18. Damezza Augur

Would a shaman face tank better than a mage pet? Obviously there’s no direct means of threat gen, but I’m not talking about a shaman tanking for a group, only a duo box team
  19. Velerin Journeyman

Mage pets are super flimsy in the early expansions. A while back they reverted them until a later expansion, I forgot when they flip the switch. However later after SoF they become amazing tanks.

A well geared shaman would tank better. Maybe not 1-60, but once you get to Luclin and get AA I would say yes.
