MAG or NEC for Heroic 100

I have never played MAG, NEC or WIZ in the past and now its time to claim my level 100 heroic for the 25th anniversary and I think I want to use it for either MAG or NEC. My play time is mostly Solo or Molo with occasional grouping when I can and no raiding ever since it doesn't appeal to me. I prefer questing and missions over XP grinds.

If any of you would like to share your thoughts on one of these two classes versus the other for players that do not raid I would like to hear what you have to say and any recommendation that you may have.

Mage and Necromancer are both super strong classes that bring a lot to the group and solo game. Mage pet is stronger and can (depending on focus) tank anything in the group game. But with the right focus, the necro pet can also tank anything in the group game. Both put out very solid DPS. Both have a lot of utility.

The necromancer is stronger when you are soloing mobs. They have better abilities when it comes to splitting mobs, pulling, and handling multiples. If you spend most of your time soloing and have an explorer's mentality, liking to work your way deep into a zone, you might want to go necro.

While both classes bring a lot to groups, the mage usually gets the nod in terms of how much it brings to a group. If most of the time you're going to be in a group, you might want to go mage. Mages may have a slightly easier time getting groups.

Necros can take a little longer to take down mobs as it takes time for their dots to ramp up, but they are great mana generators and can continuously pump out damage with their hp for mana skin, blood magic, and death bloom.

Mages can often kill faster with their nukes plus pet, but even with their rods and mana regen spells, mana can sometimes be a challenge in a fast killing group.

I play both and enjoy both. Pick your flavor. The nice thing about the 100 boosts is you can delete the character and try the other class if you change your mind. Just make sure to transfer the platinum and any tradeable consumables as those are only given once (I forget exactly what is given once, but I know platinum is the main one). If I was going to analogize, I'd say the mage class is your boxer, while the necromancer class is more a stealth grappler.

    Good luck, have fun.

Quests and missions - NEC would be a better choice in this case.

NEC offers a lot of utility that helps tremendously with questing and that will make your life easier. Necro pets are not as beefy as BST and MAG pets but still can do very well.

MAG can solo quite well and their pets are better then NEC pets. I almost wrote they are the best pets in game; however, BST pets get many interesting buffs so perhaps they are both the best :p. If you choose a mage, you will have to be more careful with your approach and some areas will be difficult/impossible to do without boxing another character to help with cc.

WIZ brings very nice dps and I would choose this class if the goal was raiding or if the character would be a part of a boxed group.

Edit: regarding group game, I would not worry about running out of mana in fast pulling groups. With mage canni, there is never a problem with mana these days.

MAG has the stronger pet and can off tank to a small degree with swarm pets. It is otherwise singularly focused and limited in abilities. NEC are basically enchanters of the undead, can kite because of snare and can FD to get out of bad situations.

Basically... MAG is going to be a brute force approach and NEC is going to be a finesse approach. Whichever fits you better.

For just one class, go with the necro. You could add a wiz (DPS, travel, evac), beastlord (tank pet, slow, DPS), or a shamy (slow, buffs, heals, DPS) box.
