There are times you can join a guild and just see things may not be good for you and any casual guild should be fine with you joining to take a look and then leaving if you don't like what you see. At least in my opinion they should be fine with it.

If you join a guild and 18 out of 20 toons online all belong to the guild leader and they did not let you know something like that in advance then that is a red flag.

Look at what a guild uses to draw you into asking for an invite then decide if they are living up to it. In my opinion any guilds advertising should give you a good idea of what to expect.
