As I recall this change was made in conjunction with the separation of spells that grant illusions from their associated stat buffs that was done alongside the introduction of the Illusion Key ring system for "The Broken Mirror" expansion. Some of those spells/items now give an illusion plus an "illusion benefit" buff, so maybe check you aren't buff-blocking something like that or that it isn't going to the short-term buff bar if your buff bar is fully populated. Also buffs that grant a boost to strength may block this.
