I was today years old when I learned EQ didn't go under bc WoW

Seriously, though, I assumed it went under because I didn't hear much about it after everyone I knew switched to WoW (except me & my bff. we went to Guild Wars). I was talking about it a couple weeks ago and how I was sad it wasn't around. Then, today, my friend asked me if i ever played WoW. The convo led to how i never really got into it because I didn't like it as much as EQ. So i looked it up to see if there was anything reminiscent of it. And holy mother of god, I am shook. Trying to get Windows to work so I can install it.

Out of curiosity, has anything major changed in the past 15 years? I feel dumb asking because.. I mean, it's been fifteen years.. but the lady in blue with the blond ponytail is in the background of this page, and I remember her at the login screen or something. So maybe it's not that different. Anyway, does anyone have any advice/input for me that could help after being gone for 15 years?

Start a brand new char and go though the tutorial. Not sure if you played before or after we had mercenaries on live. Those are very helpful. If you FTP you can get apprentice if your paying you can get journeyman. They include Healer type, DPS melee, DPS caster, Tank. FTP ones can take you up to 60 before they start having issues. I think the main thing is go do the tutorial.

Lots of things have majorly changed, Start with the tutorial, then look into all the other stuff you will need to figure out as you go.

I would suggest looking on youtube for at least at a few videos. Do a search for everquest new player guide, everquest returning player guide, maybe a let's play everquest just make sure it is fairly newish and probably everquest advanced loot system, or if you have a lot of time to sift through the good the bad and the ugly just try an everquest search.

Maps- you will need them think most use either Good's, or Brewall's Maps. Maybe others? I have not updated my maps in awhile.

The Tank Merc will get you a long way in leveling up then depending on class after level 50-60 ish you may want to swap to what suits your class best.

there were some good posts here on the forums with tons of links to information but the search function -shudders- is not the best i'll see if I can find one of the newer ones and link it here

Ok found a few link to get you started

This one has some info that is good even for non level 85 heroic characters and some that won't be relevant at lower levels. Not perfect read the comments for varying opinions. Scroll down for the updates.

Make a new toon. Do the tutorial. Do the quests with Secalna Galnor in PoK after doing the tutorial. Do the Hero's Journey or use it as a guide for leveling. Make your J key the hotbutton for the Hero's Journey. Make your L key the hotbutton for the advanced loot window.

Lots of things changed, but it will still be very familiar. Everything you knew will still be pretty much the same, and if you play through the expansions on a progression server, you can see how those changes happened over time.

Sometimes people act like the game has changed a lot, but in my opinion the only major change has been that the marketplace allows players to buy things they didn't earn in game. Other than that, it's been more of a mesh of classes and an expansion of existing content.

For example on the meshing, monks now get a mez, ENC can fade, things of that sort, where classes earned other classes abilities over time. This is a good change, as with lower populations the ability to get a perfect class makeup in a mission is harder, but less important, and it reduces the time of LFG because more people can fill more roles.

And the number of abilities and actions per minute is higher, but this is due to a lot of changes in gameplay in general where the original EQ was too slow, but also as I said above, you also have more abilities now, so if you want to optimize your role/DPS you have more ways to do it, but more actions to take. But don't worry, it's a far stretch from games like BDO or ESO.

Other things like augmentations, spell ranks, quests windows are just expansions of the existing systems.

Also Free to Play, if not on a progression server, is nice because, say you want to play a paladin, you can box a FTP shaman, so you always have slow and it makes it easier to adventure alone when you can't find a group.

Hey, awesome story to hear that you've been in the dark. EQ is still amazing but has many changes. Lot of good advice already here but wanted to say, welcome back and I hope you are glad and stay!
