I truly believe Phinigel will lose a lot of players after PoP ends.

Vanguard was developed with the Unreal Engine 2 and it was originally created for first person shooters, small amount of players in little zone. What Brad and Sigil did was create a giant almost seamless world with an engine that didn't support what they accomplished. The real issue and the reason that Vanguard died was SoEs complete inability to fix all the very broken network code that was written by Sigil. They even went so far as to use PlantSide 2 network code as a replacement but that was a giant failure and caused server instability and crashes. SoEs direction for the game also 50+ was just plain terrible and also hurt the games future chances at success. Once again they took something that Brad created and took it in a direction that was just wrong. Even with all the Extra content they had from Sigil they seemed to completely run in a different direction with future content. I will say they did try to resurrect the game multiple times but like some many that post on here about how bad it was the damage was already done.

What Vanguard also had and no MMO will ever have again was Keith Parkinson and his over all art direction for Vanguard. Hands down the best dungeon in any MMO i have even been in was Nusibe Necrolis. With Gerald Brom designing some crazy awesome monster models and Keith as the overall architecture\world lead you ended up with a wonderfully consistent looking giant seamless world that was Telon. Granted it had a rough start but it was ahead of its time and it was a great MMO.”

i feel you are coming down a bit hard on SoE when they are the sole reason the game lasted as long as it did to begin with. they made it playable.

there was so much to love about vanguard, it will forever be the greatest tragedy in MMOs. Vanguard had me hooked from the start of development, through release. to this day i think its the best MMO ever in regards to the leveling experience and having so many options that i never felt the need to rush to max level. the low to midlevel content itself was engaging and rewarding enough i never felt the need to rush to raid like just about every other MMO ever.

nothing ive read or seen about pantheon has hooked me the same way. im not a fan of the concept of the world itself, it sounds clumsy both literally and figuratively. sections of different planets colliding on a single world? yea...ok. and it seems like they have reverted from the creative classes they had in vanguard, like disciple and blood mage. to the warrior mage cleric roles and the standard deviations.

hopefully im wrong, but i just dont see it.

I'd really love to hear an actual response other than the usual liberal giggling and laughing because you don't really have an argument to make. Vanguard failed because they initially thought Microsoft, of all companies involved with the industry, would ever have an online gaming presence. So tell me, how has Microsoft fared since their initial foot dipping into the online gaming market? They haven't done literally anything on their own? Just licensed out content for third party developers for their home consoles and not PC games? Weird. It's almost like that deal had no traction to begin with.

Then we get to SOE purchasing the game, to do nothing other than bury it. After leaving a skeleton crew on the game for a year or so, and a lot of positive feedback from the community that was still there, SOE gave out free time to everyone who had ever played. The game thrived for another year due to the population increase and the game actually working like it should have at launch.

The fact you apparently honestly believe that anyone would make the same mistakes again, is hilarious. What MMO has launched, since Vanguard, with as many problems as Vanguard had at launch? Not a single one? Because they weren't rushed to launch like Vanguard was? Because Pantheon has a set release date they're rushing to push the game out towards right? They don't? Strange.

It's almost like they learned from their mistakes, scaled down the content from three initial continents a la EQ1 and Vanguard to two continents, don't have a set release date to adhere to, aren't relying on anyone else's funding other than player generated backing and after being able to show actual profitability, investor funds; not Microsoft.

So I get that you can draw the literally single correlation between Vanguard and Pantheon by saying "Brad McQuaid". However, the similarities end there. The current track of Pantheon doesn't resemble any track that Vanguard literally ever took, in its entire lifespan from initial development to sunset.

Yeah, kind of like how no matter what the login servers are doing, whether or not anyone can actually connect to the game if they're not already logged into the game; the marketplace servers never go down!

I guess the Pantheon crew would really benefit from learning a thing or two from a company that's been on life support for several years with Daybreak, amirite?”
