How is there not at least 1 Corpse Retrieval Server? Just 1?
Really curious as to how there is not at least 1 server with CR's just 1? Insane they don't have one. Increase the difficulty of the game please.
Every single server used to be this way and you had a chance to release one you even have the correct label for it "hardcore" Please please please make a server with this feature. Thanks.

    just 1.........

Pantheon is coming, unless you're one that believes it won't release or something

    Go retrieve this corpse, sir.

Item duping, corpse shenanigans as well.

Also EQ grew out of that mechanic and it eventually was pruned.

WIthout adding my opinion on whether it's good or bad: It won't happen. They've made it clear that significant code changes are too much manpower/cost for the game in this stage of its lifecycle.

Things like xp rate or spawn rate are easily adjusted - just change a field in the database, the tool for changing them is already there. Despite corpse looting being an "old" feature, it was long since written out of the game and would require new tools to implement on just one server.

I heard somewhere that they can’t do it without effecting live servers. How true this I don’t know. But it would certainly explain the lack of corpse runs

Apparently there were exploits in a number of games, not just EQ, that allowed duping of items and coin with corpse looting. So there's a good reason for them to never ever bring back corpse retrieval and looting. That's also to very likely be the reason for no PvP with corpse looting as well

This is true of a lot of things that aren't just value changes - like XP for example. An xp modifier is server specific where quest changes, boss fight mechanics and corpses are code changes. Later things that they added(bandolier, extended target) are probably like flipping a switch where some mechanics are a mass of code depending on how/when it was originally programmed.

Code changes are done universal so they don't end up having to support and patch 40 different versions of the software.

(I'm guessing the specifics above but you get my point.)

yep spending hours and being late for work to get your body back before it rotted,or calling a friend on the phone at 4 am to log his cleric on to rez you.
  10. mark Augur

i do miss the cr but it would be a nightmare to loose a raid geared body with his or hers 2.5 especially a main tank, imagine a server crashed eq his down for months remember the hack a few years ago and your guild comes back with all the gear gone.

Corpse looting is a self regulated feature.

    You die.

You put all your gear in your bag.

You run to your corpse and "tag" it.

    You put on your gear.

All the challenge and joy remains, if you choose to have it.

Don't think this is true, since they offered to put corpse runs back in on previous TLP's and we (overwhelmingly) voted against it.

When you die put all your gear in your bags and run back to your corpse. Drag it to a cleric for a rez. Have fun!

Simple, they didn't write the "removal of corpse retrieval" code to be a boolean value on the server. Meaning, it's not an easy "switch", and would require new development to make it optional.

At least that's the only good explanation. Otherwise, they just think we don't want to deal with that anymore.

Same reason they cant fix monk fists, pet damage, weapon damage bonus, revamped spells etc etc etc....

the code is server side, meaning if they changed it the change wouldbe across all servers, not just tlp

Has nothing to do with significant code changes. Or not being able to run different servers, with different code.

Maintaining multiple branches of code is well-known by any software developer. Let's use TEST server for example. It's running different code than LIVE, right? Different EQ servers, running different code. Well, if you have the knowledge to maintain TEST on different code? Then you could do that for any server.

This "code" is just data files in folders. You copy it, paste it somewhere else, and edit it. When done, point some server instances at code path A. And others at code path B. No exaggeration, it can be that easy.

Assuming the corpse run code is "gone" (which I seriously doubt: they'll have backups from past years). Rewriting it would not be rocket science:
    • You die, gear removed from inventory. That's a few database record updates.
    • A "corpse" object is created, with a unique ID number. It expires after X days. It points at the inventory records previously associated with your character.
    • Only you can interact with that specific Object ID. Just like you're only allowed to loot certain objects.
    • If you click this object before it expires? It opens a container that has your stuff. If you loot everything, the object is removed from the game (your corpse goes "poof")
    • Otherwise if it expires, then you never get your stuff back.

No-one thinks it's a coding impossibility. Everyone knows it's more code labor than DBG is willing to invest in this game at this point in its life, though.

The real question is why would they want to bring back a feature that comes hard coded with a bug that'll allow shenanigans such as duping items and other exploits?
  19. Ceffener Augur

They have said 10 billion times they are not going to maintain separate server code for all the servers. They have stayed consistent with this for around 10 years. But hey sure implying they are stupid and telling them how easy it is will change things.

Also your explanation of how code works implies you have never wrote code that has to be compiled.

Because the server would have 100 players max. I would venture 98% of the player base, or more, don't care to go through that. We aren't 15 to 20 years old anymore.
