Don't think of it as a must but rather think of it as more tools in your toolbox. Understanding that the flat reduction portion doesn't stack with some disciplines means that you might be able to dual wield more often. If you're not dying then you might not need to use your shield.

    Did somebody say HP warriors?

  5. Lluianae Elder

Oof. Toprem I'm surprised you even have that.

The piercing gaze of knight and cleric envy. Requiescat in pace, Battleblade.
  6. Juzam_Djinn Elder

I only have it because Photobucket has been bothering me for months about being over storage, went in and DL'ed everything I had on both accounts, one of them still had that comic I made.

Oh god, did he die? Or you just saying that because he quit?
  7. Lluianae Elder

I came across his obituary from 2017 some time ago. At first I wasn't confident if it was him until the mention of the Curious George games he worked on.
  8. Juzam_Djinn Elder

Oh damn, I didn't know. Googling for BB turns up some threads, his name got changed to Battleaxe and the last one was in 2016. You got a link to it?

I quit at the beginning of The Burning Lands and just recently returned to EQ. I must say I was pleasantly surprised to see warriors dual wielding again! I remember asking about adding utility to dual wield back in Pre 100 EQ and this guy, Battleblade went full NPC mode on me, he loved shield tanking so much. Does he still play?

I knew a multi-time champion fighter in SCA. I spoke to him once about shields specifically. He explained to me how shields are not exclusively a defensive tool as most of us think they are. He used his shield offensively as both a weapon itself and as a tool to put his opponent in the position that he wanted them to be in for his strikes.

I am not disagreeing with your second paragraph above, but the 3rd, you say that you should only be able to bash after a block. That is not accurate to the offensive capability of shields. That view on the use of shields for blocks, perfect blocks and combos is driven by video game gameplay, not actual fighting technique. Knights should be able to bash anytime they want, offensively.

If anything, tanks should have a knockback AA ability that allows them to push a mob backward for positioning and a grapple ability that lets them position them forward slightly. Similar to the bard song push but tank version. Shields are used to push opponents in combat and currently the passive push is not accurate to the capabilities of shields. They should be able to bash push purposefully.

Press the Attack AA from level 67

    Grappling Strike, 71

neither requires a shield, because this is EverQuest and warriors in EQ dual wield.

you should do some paragraphs about the summoned elementals in SCA, though

I believe you are confusing SCA fighting with LARPing.

I do use a shield occasionally. I think last time was NoS. But it is a hundred percent me wanting to lower my dps while keeping up the sweet sweet main hand aggro proc.
  14. Lianeb Augur

I think shield was my last item in NoS will probably my Last TS item in LS.
I did pick up a LS T1 since we have had like 40 of them drop, but I hardly ever use it.
  15. Bigstomp Augur

I recently picked up a shield because I figured I should have one before we went 17 alts deep on them.

If warriors can tank end game raid content without a raid something is not right. They should always be using a shield to reduce damage and if they can duel wield the boss isn't hitting hard enough.

Duel wielding should be used for extra dps for group content where they don't need to reduce damage but still for non-raiders hard group bosses they should be using a shield. Why do you think warriors normally have 1h warrior only weapons with extra high ratio similar to pallies / sk only 1h weapons just not normally as high since they can't duel wield.

The duel wield ability lets warriors make a choice on what they need to use so if they aren't the main tank they can swap to duel wield for extra dps but if the main tank dies and they take over they should swap to a shield. As someone has already noted I think these days it is needed less than say GoD era which is the hardest expansion to date (still think GoD was suppose to be released with OOW which would have made it a much more reasonable expansion for groupers)

Heck over the years as a bard I have even used special dmg reduction / lifetap weapons + shield when I wanted to tank harder stuff.

I am not sure I have shield tanked a mob since TBL, after the boost to the warrior weapons and mob fluffiness there is no need to.

Equipping a shield has been universally dumb for warriors since CotF (this doozy, the Aug 2016 patch) when Shield Specialist and Improved Shield Specialist AAs were consolidated/revamped away in the introduction of Proficiencies. Applications since then have been extremely niche, mostly in situations where the enemy isn't being engaged by teammates at all so that agro doesn't matter, probably due to hp locks so the warrior's own damage doesn't matter.

The only thing you said that I agree with.... well except the trash that drops luck augs/type 19's
  20. Bigstomp Augur

That makes me very sad. While I disagreed with him almost 100% of the time he was a strong advocate of what he thought the warrior should be.
    I remember him from TSW
