Group missions for the 1-box player?

I play alone on one account with one character and I like to do as much progression as I can in various expansions. Solo tasks and heroics are open to me but I think group missions generally require 3 and I would like do those as well. I am thinking about making an FTP account with a level 100 heroic character but I guess I would actually need two FTP accounts and run 3 instances of EQ in order to get a group mission. But even then if I only want to control 1 character and leave the other 2 idle is that even practical or are the group missions generally designed such that all 3 characters have to do something over the course of the mission?

A lot depends on what classes you are running. I am comfortable with a ranger as my main and an enchanter for the second place. There are many other combos - whatever your comfortable with and can set up to make boxing easy for you.

Just those 2 with mercs did me good until NOS. Now at level 125 and in Laurion's Song, I need to run a third character with merc.

They are both paid accounts so I can run the best mercs. Healer on ranger and tank on chanter. So that might be a problem if you stray FTP on the second account.

So I think you will be able to do a lot of the progression. Not sure which group missions you mean that require 3 but mercs usually count so you have 4 (2 characters w/2 mercs) (like LDON's)

My play style is to usually have the ranger pull the mob, the tank merc attacks it, adjust the ranger in position, hit auto fire and then move to my chanter and hit a bunch of spells from hot keys or in the gems. Meanwhile my merc healer keeps us all going. BTW this merc healer is still keeping up with us in Laurion's Song even though I added that third character and merc.

There are a few raids, missions etc in the game that require you to have a couple characters click an item at the same time but those are so rare I would not worry about them.

There is also a lot of ideas about how to download and runs separate copies of the game into separate folders and if you want to do that then maybe google how since I do not have that set up. Years ago I downloaded one copy of the game and when I created my other characters, I downloaded it again (twice) just to make another icon on the desktop. So I use 3 icons and log in one account on each icon, others use one icon and log in over and over. This also helps me keep them in line on the taskbar at the bottom of my computer screen so I can click between them when I am boxing.

You may need to do some trial and error but the good thing is there is no penalty in the game for messing something up :)

Of course this whole post is totally useless if your on TLP

An important part of FTP is that you wont have as good of gear and can not earn AA. Some of the best FTP boxes are the ones that are not impacted as much by that. Say for instance, you are a tank main and you want slow and some aDPS, a SHM spells will still work well. Say you are a BST and you want some Paci to help with pulling, then an ENC is great for such things. If you have to Alt+Tab and dont like the boxing, a MAG is great because sending in the pet gives some extra DPS with minimal input. On the other hand a FTP warrior would really struggle.

Thank you for those responses. I should clarify that I am interested in doing progression on older expansions that my character can handle solo with merc and/or pet. I am not looking for combat challenges rather I enjoy the story arcs and trying to figure out the missions without looking at cheat sheets or how to guides. So really the FTP account would just idle and filling the required 3rd spot in this scenario.

If you are going to bring them with you, use a MAG and a DRU. Being able to port your team close and CotH to the same spot will make things a lot easier for you. That also gives you the ability to cure yourself with the druid and send the mage pet in for a little extra easy DPS if you like.

If you are just going to leave them in the GH or something, instead pick classes that have buffs you want. SHM, ENC, DRU, hybrid HP/ATK (BST, RNG or PAL), BST regen, etc. I have a FTP SHM I keep in the GH and level it with overseer. It hasn't left the GH since level like 90 and is now 116. I also use a BST for the mana regen.

Starting with The Broken Mirror expansion, you can request almost all missions even if you are solo. That doesn't mean you'll be able to complete them all without out-levelling the expansions, though. Even before The Broken Mirror, you can usually requests missions as long as you have two character and one mercenary in a group.

This thread is interesting to me as I'm planning to start solo.

Do the filler FTP accounts need to be at an appropriate level to accept missions?

Some do have requirements, others do not. So it's a hit and miss. But I don't think that becomes an issue until later expansions
