Family Constantly Getting Disconnected

So I talked my kids into joining me on Teek. We are level 2 in Gfay and on orc hill and constantly getting disconnected. We are on separate PCs in separate rooms. If I log in by myself I can play as long as I want no issues.

If we log in and stay in different zones we can play as long as we want no issues.

The instant we're in the same zone/pick, disconnects happen. This is "truebox" code, yeah?

My kids are turned off EQ again. They're playing Roblox and I'm on EQ by myself.

    Awesome job, Darkpaw. Bravo.

It is not the truebox code. I have not logged into Teek, however, the very high population on that server stresses connections, as I suspect very high usage on many web sites stresses the links. Perhaps you could pick a less populated server to try an experiment, no need to stay on the medium or even low population server, just test out if it is like trying to get anything done at a super population festival- just extreme crowds. While being on the most popular spot may be sweet, the idea is to do things as a family, the high pop regular servers should provide less connection stress, and still allow you to get together, as should the medium pop servers

Except it IS likely truebox code, pushing buttons at around the same time on the same wifi even though you are on otherwise completely independent machines causes the disconnect. Testing on other servers wont have the issue because they don't have truebox. I guess you could test on Tormax and prove conclusively its not population related.

I just did some more testing. Evidence suggests we are being disconnected by the server, not due to connection. When we are grouped in the same zone and fighting, we all get disconnected at the same time. We tried a different zone. Same effect.

This seems to be the "truebox" way. One computer per household. Unless we run VM cheats to circumvent the server code. Which could get us banned.

I have been a fan of EverQuest since 2000. But this situation, seriously, makes me rethink the entire mess. I am so disenfranchised and upset that my kids and I cannot experience EQ the way I did back in the early days.

    This SUCKS.

I run two comps and managed to get into Tormax and no problem with connection, during the opening day, the two computers have different IP address, and truebox detects to verify that. Not sure i want to try Teek on the fathers day weekend, but will, just to find out.
Okay two halflings, in Misty Thicket, total pop of 4 and no problem. is the only version as no pick zones, I suspect that you are in a very heavy pop zone, why when together you get bounced, is another question.

You have different Internet Service Providers for each PC? This sounds extreme.

Also, I thought "Truebox" server rules meant those that wish to box can do so from separate computers. I could be wrong. This is my first TLP ever. Such a cool server. Such a horrible implementation of "Truebox".

Try having folks move their hotbuttons around. One person get 1-4 as their primary hotkeys they spam durring fights, one get 5-8 and so on. It's about pushing the same buttons on the computers at roughly the same time. Change it up a bit and you should be good.

I have a router, each comp goes through my service provider, do a /w for the zone you are trying to play in, do a /pick to see if is a lower pop zone that you can switch to- /pick only gives about 10 seconds to switch (if grouped the whole group makes the jump). Every computer connection gets its own identity code on the internet, I prob misstated ISP should have said IP address.
Okay used Persona, to switch to wood elf and into G fay, one zone is 88 pp other is 24 pop, handled minor fights in the high pop zone, the more data incoming, can disrupt the connection. There are ways to reduce the stress on your connection, by cutting some data stream choices. In any case, I hope you find ways to enjoy family time

My wife and I boxed 6 characters on thornblade. Mess around on teek a little. The ONLY time we had the truebox disconnect thing was 3 total times, and all were when we were going ham on something doing as much as possible (ikkiniz trial I remember, a few other times). Always, for whatever reason, 5 would disconnect, luckily leaving the paladin, so was able to survive until they logged back in.

I have a hard time believing this, but we actually play on 6 keyboards, so....

Why not cut to the nut and load up on another TLP or Live server to see how you all stay connected?

Thanks for all the suggestions. We'll try again tomorrow if I can convince them, heh.

Something I noticed: Don't run a browser while in game. Some sites are OK, but ones like Allakhazam severely mess with game play: Snap lag, discos from packet loss. In game connection meter goes from ~70 to 500+ if I don't close down Allakhazam as soon as I find what I'm looking for.

    Exactly what twistingtime said

All these replies are complete nonsense.

The reason you are getting disconnected is their system to deter multiboxers.

If you are in the same location as another player, you cannot press the same keys on the keyboard at the same time or you will be immediately disconnected.

Both of you spamming "1" or "2" during a fight = instant DC.

I will go ahead and let you know the real solution; put your kid's computers on a VPN. Contrary to what you will have these forum animals telling you, it is not against the rules.

    Enjoy never being disconnected again.

I thought it was VM's, not VPNs, that are forbidden.
  17. Gheed Augur

Unfortunately some people don't understand that. Sort of like the people that say any "box" is a "bot".

VMs are not allowed, even on live servers. VPNs, however, are fine. And something like surfshark, which is under $3 a month and unlimited devices, will 100% solve your issues. VPNs are good for just general web surfing and identity protection anyways.

Proton VPN has a free version that works well enough, no reason to spend money.

Disconnects are caused by you and your family pressing the same key multiple times in a row at the same time. Like others have sad just bind your keys that you press often to different keys on the keyboard then your family member and you’ll be fine!
