Thanks for clarification. The not unique and not a rare creature had me thinking that. Is the npc found in one of the 2 ocean zones (Ocean of Tears or Erud's Crossing)?
Hard to say, but game defines them as "humanoid". Leaning to yes. Characteristics of mammals: air-breathing - yes plus warm-blooded - probably have a backbone - yes uniquely capable of regulating their body temperature via their metabolism and sweat glands - maybe mammary glands - no unless all of them we have seen are male undercoat and guard hair - not evident but some mammals have very little hair unique jaw and ear bones - unknown four chambered heart - probably diaphragm - yes, I think so complex brain functions - yes! You got a lot for your "money".
But in role, yes! Some philosophy: Is not the role of all of us unique? My druid is just an ordinary druid, same armor, same spells; but I consider him unique. He councils new and returning characters at length to ease their entry into our world, making them comfortable. He teaches characters trades needed for their epics, supplying components or farming components with them. Answering other questions to the best of our knowledge. Not all other characters do this. As so with the "a black bear" of Commonlands. He is not alone but has his place to be, role to play.
