Everquest never had loot boxes, even though they are extremely prevalent in other games. When John Smedley said that SoE would only ever sell cosmetic items, he lied, we knew he lied and we told him the rare times he posted on the forums. But Everquest stopped at XP potions. It's one thing to have an addictive game like Everquest, it's another thing to turn addictive gaming into a casino like companies like Blizzard do. In a world where EA and Blizzard hire psychologists to maximize the revenue of loot boxes, where players become gamblers and where morals are lost, it is a saving grace that Everquest never took that path. I always hated "Smedley Bucks", but my dislike for what other companies are doing is much greater.
