I haven't looked in a while, but I recall there being AA (total domination maybe?) in PoP that increases the effectiveness of charms. Can't speak much to the mechanics of it however. I think it was a PoP AA?

I think so, I remember in PoP era chanters soloing in lower planes like Disease with a fixed duration charm which worked on light blue mobs, but I might be wrong, I didn't play a chanter in these times.

Dire charm had a lvl limit that was fairly low when it was first released max mob was 46 IIRC and you had to be 59 to unlock the AA, Necro's got one that worked on undead and I believe druids got one for animals.

Most of the PoP zones specifically had easy to access lvl 46 mobs for dire charm, on TLP servers I'd expect those to be hard to find as ppl will either kill them or there will be a dire charmer already using it. I don't believe they respawn if someone has it dire charmed.

Total Domination made charm stronger and harder for the mobs to break, so effectively it tended to increase duration although I don't believe it extended the max duration of the charm, just increased the likelyhood of it lasting until it wore off.

Not sure how charm works these days, it was strong in PoP, but got nerfed in later expacs as others have said, I was pretty casual first time through PoP and most of the PuGs I joined did not use charm unless it was the dire version, I expect with improvements in player mitigation and gear quality of your average PuG member it will be more in demand this time around.

At some point for the solo enchanter it becomes more effective to reverse charm, which usually involves tashing and rooting a mob, charming pets and sending them at it until it gets low on hp, then breaking the charm and killing the ex pet. Or something like that.

Thinking back on it, TD did enhance duration to last longer, but did not actually extend the max duration. I recall Zamiel on EQMac doing a study on this. You might still be able to find it buried somewhere on those forums. I want to say it was closer to max duration at 65 with a level 63is pet with malo and tash almost every time - with the random immediate breaks of course

As for reverse charming, this definitely becomes an acquired skill that makes you a more efficient soloer. Why waste mana slowing or pet toys or finding a healer to split XP with when you could simply replace a pet with a fresh one. The beefed up dots could probably help finishing mobs off too. Couple caveats with changes to roots, aggro transfer from pets and such could put an end to how effective these strategies end up being now. So something to be cognizant of depending on what you're trying to charm pet tank.

Necros also get a charm. Deathrot Knights in Crypt of Decay are an excellent option although things get dicey in those close quarters. Druids charm frogs in Storms (I think) as well.

My preference was always a Chanter charming in Valor however. Plenty of room and generally clustered mobs to chew up with pets in the cave or upstairs with the golems and bugs. I will miss Shakerpaging however. That was the best :(
