Devs - Do people use VM ware for work?

This is still on them though. Not us. Not everyone is in the know about what happened with ShowEQ and Planetside. Not everyone saw a dev saying "I advise you not to". We see the black and white rules "do not use a VM to play EQ' and thats it. So following that rule has gotten me (and others) suspended. If having a VM on your pc is a problem then they should be more clear (as others have suggested) on what that may cause. OR as someone has suggested, pay for more anti cheat measures. Assuming people are cheating because they have a VM on their PC is bad policy. Now you got people mad at your company, threatening to quit etc because of your bad measures and your inability to tell the difference between running EQ in a VM or running it out of a VM. Not only that but no one is saying anything about it. No one is responding to tickets. Here we are Friday (3 days later). It's 3pm est. I assume DBG will be packing up for the weekend in 4-5 hours. Leaving those of us who were unjustly suspended hanging for the weekend when we could probably be enjoying our time in a game we are paying a subscription for.

My guess is they are trying to let this ride the 7 days then let the smoke clear. Its a completely unprofessional way to handle it. I fully understand why this whole VM suspension thing happened. But if they would at least make a post saying ya we messed up for some people I'd be happier with the company and slide this whole thing under the rug.

Help! I'm a daytrader in addition to playing EverQuest on 6 accounts for 14 hours a day. My company makes me use VM and you're discriminating against our ilk!

I guess if everything stands for 7 days then I was right. If not and they make amends before then I will apologize. I'm not trying to bring DBG down as a company. I do, afterall, play their game and enjoy it.

They don't even have to make a public post. Email the folks that didn't break the rules and give them their account back.

Well, the clock is ticking. Here we are, what, almost half way through those seven days?
  7. voidtek1969 Lorekeeper

Good luck! I mean that from the very bottom of my heart!

afaik the first wave was last thursday night / friday morning so we're already past 7 days.
  9. Yolan Lorekeeper

Wasn't the first wave supposedly bans? So it doesn't matter to them.

Googled it - nothing comes up except getting around true boxing.

The crutch of anyone who whats to support a lie. "JuSt gOoGleee iiiit"
  11. voidtek1969 Lorekeeper

The first wave was both. The people that were banned were already bad actors.

I wasn't sure cuz I don't remember seeing these posts till Tuesday. But then I wasn't really looking till then.

I believe you are talking about Hyper V which has to be enabled it does not come enabled in win 10 from what I recall.
  14. yober Elder

That's true but there are other windows features that you can enable that rely on hyper-v. So it is possible to have hyper-v enabled without explicitly doing it yourself.

Actually, I sent a pm to Dreamweaver letting him know that out of curiousity, I checked my task manager and yes, I have various Hyper-V entries, all in the stopped state though. And I have never used a vm. This is in win 10 pro. Now I didn't receive any suspension, but whether that is due to never having actually used vmware or that I don't play on any of the truebox servers or there is something else going on, I don't know.

As far as I know, no one has reported a suspension or ban except players who are playing on truebox.

Windows is required to run the game. Suspension over any default feature of Windows would be such a bad idea I have problems believing any developer would do it.

Development meeting: “Look I know they have x installed by default. And yes I know we can’t delete it because it’s a core capability of the OS required to play our game. But how about, stay with me, we ban people for using Windows.

    Yeah, hard to imagine.

That's because they likely aren't checking processes or services like this. Rudimentary malware can determine very quickly if it's in a virtualized environment or a desktop environment before it executes. There are many ways for a very small piece of software to determine with very high accuracy if it's being executed inside of a VM or not. I don't doubt that there are a few unfortunate mistakes that were made, but 3/4 days in, it's pretty obvious that this was a high rate of success on DBG's part.

Wow, so the OP is telling DBG not to enforce the Truebox rules? Well, if you feel that way, fair enough, but let it be clear that you're not speaking for everyone. I'm glad to see that DBG is doing something and I'd like them to continue. Obviously if there are flaws in their processes, it would be nice if they can improve them, but that's no reason to abandon the effort.

Also, the narrative that a large portion of the EQ playerbase are IT professionals who are all playing EQ on their work machine, and that they all constantly need to run VMs for their work, really isn't very believable. For one thing, you really don't need a VM for everything IT related that you do.
