DPS mercenaries should assist the main assist and only the main assist. However there has long been a bug where DPS mercenaries will assist their owner regardless of the main assists target. This is extremely annoying when you have players in your group like shamans, enchanters, druids, rangers, necromancers etc. who are using root as a form of CC but also have a caster DPS mercenary. To reproduce: Create a group with two players. Lets just say a warrior and a druid. Set the warrior as the Main Tank and Main Assist in the group Summon a Caster DPS mercenary on druid, set to Burn of Balanced stance Pull Mob A and Mob B into camp on warrior Warrior targets and attacks Mob A --MA ring is on Mob A-- Druid targets and Paralytic Spore/Any form of root on Mob B Wait and watch Caster DPS mercenary nuke Mob B, likely causing it to summon rendering root a useless CC method with a caster DPS merc.
