That does not reduce humans it only increases the boxers.

And the only new servers we get are TLP's...Most of them never get close to live.

If everyone started boxing there would be no additional servers....just less single player characters.

The number of humans did not decrease only the number of boxers increases.

One more time pointing out the obvious...Humans are also the ones boxing.

IF you are concerned that the number of single players will become the minority, that ship sailed decades ago.

Boxing thins humanity in the sense that everyone ends up interacting and grouping with fewer humans on average. The total number of humans is not relevant to this effect, though of course boxing reduces the total number of humans as well.

And boxes aren't humans unless those humans are 1-boxing. A box belonging to a multiboxer is at best 1/2 of a human and frequently less than that.

there is no such thing as half a human....lmao

The person playing the main character is also the person playing the boxed character.

When you resort to "in the sense" just means you are making something up that is not true to support your skewed argument.

but whatever....KAREN....if you want to believe it reduces humans it is a free country....lol

You're entitled and acting irrational so I doubt this information will change your mind. You're complaining about boxes "ruining" your "game experience." That's entirely on you and your personal expectations/needs for a 25 year old game.

You need to understand that this game is 25 years old. EQ launched in an era before MySpace and AOL Instant messenger... "The internet" as we know it didn't exist. People have this nostalgia for the experience of when this game functioned as a chat room/message board/dating app because MMOs were new and different and a way for people to socialize on the internet before social media and Discord and VRChat. People no longer need to sign in to EQ to access that online social space and MMOs as a genre have struggled to cope with adapting to the new paradigm.

Some people box for the krono or RMT. That's a true statement. At the same time, plenty of people run 2-3 toons because they enjoy the low APM gameplay and likely have 1 or 2 close friends who still play. These are people who (even if they lied when they accepted the EULA in 1999) are closer to 40 than 20 and have jobs/families now and don't have unlimited time to wait for 5 other someones who are interested in the same activity that they are to show up. Live servers are close to a "modern" MMO with little to no emphasis on endless grind, but TLPs and the "classic" EQ experience feature a single way to progress your character: grind. People who don't have unlimited free time might choose to pay an extra 2 subscriptions in order to make that feasible, and acting like that's not a valid choice shows your closeminded entitlement.

You'll have to excuse my mistake of trying to explain what I was saying in other words.

I understand the motivations and benefits of boxing. Addressing its harms is still worthwhile, not just for me but for many existing and potential players.

What is it that you want me to do differently?

There are no harms from boxing only perceived harms.

Boxing is why we are not forced to play on private servers.

Every box character is just as much a human if not moreso than the ninja /afk XP leaches who waste a spot in a group

/thread really. People wish boxers didn't exist but that's like wishing athletes didn't exist. The fact is, the game allows it. The history of computing allows it.

And if you have a knack for or enjoyment of it, it's the hardest way you can play the game, when you consider amount of moving parts possible. I can't box for nothing, b/c I use all my big brain power for my high pressure career as a pre-natal transplant surgeon.

Everything happens because the structure of the system incentivizes it. If someone leaves their front door wide open and then goes on vacation, if you station the police with warning, someone *will* eventually walk into the house, and they could have a valid case that they can't be charged because of the WTF clause. "The door was open!" Yeah, but that's whn you call the cops, not go wandering around the house.

Technically you broke the law. But all you did is walk through an open door really. Now, substitute "casual players and old people code of fun" for "law" and "25 year old nintendo graphics online computer program that craves subs" for "open door."

As long as that box = a subscription, this waveform never collapses, is my point. Lots of people like it. Tom Brady runs a mage squad. He is that competitive. And the old perv of lore, the true master, he liked to parse his sex life. There are types.

It will only get worse. I can imagine it would be lots of fun to see if you could create AI-run boxes. Take over entire zones, feed in the specs, come back later. Scarlett Johannsen leaves voice message at the office: "I have so many bone chips for you today I can hardly wait for you to come home!"

But even AI'ing eq wouldn't disrupt the business model. A sub is a sub is a sub.

Exactly. You've read these forums, how can you possibly be surprised something that limits the interactions to the people who post on here is wildly popular? :)

Uhhh. Who wouldn't yell at people standing on their lawn. I don't want strangers on my property. There is an electric fence in place for a reason. Last thing I need is some clueless city dweller feeding my livestock something that will make them sick or getting their kids bitten by my snotty Shetland pony.

I read these forums and wonder how these ninnies make it through a day in the real world. Imagine the fuses that blow and the resulting indignation that follows when they see average people driving as they do. LOL

You'd have to demonstrate an actual harm besides "your need for human interaction."

It's an MMO.... Human interaction is why people play an MMO over a single player game. Whether that is direct interaction or more indirect interaction. If you don't want to interact with other people why choose an MMO?

You'll have to read my posts throughout this thread. I've talked about why boxing is harmful very extensively. And if you already read what I said, I don't have more to offer.

Also, my personal reasons for wanting a boxing limit has nothing to do with human interaction. Community is just super important in MMOs, which is why I keep mentioning it.

Because they like the pace of the gameplay? Like the graphics? Enjoy crunching numbers? Why do people play idler games, or soulslikes? You're making a value judgment where if these people don't play the game for a reason you approve of they shouldn't be allowed to do so. This game is not the only available online community in the year 2024.
  19. Kahna Augur

Okay, but most people pick an MMO because they like to interact with people. People play idlers and soulslikes because the key features of those games are enjoyable to them. One of the key components of an MMO is the other people. I don't play soulslike games and then use cheat codes to avoid all the difficulty that makes a soulslike game a soulslike game. I don't think you shouldn't be allowed to play the game, but when one dislikes the very nature of a game it does make me questions why they continue to play it.

You can get all of the things you like out of this game on literally any server. The only reason to choose a TLP over any other server is the massive population all in the same era. If all you like is the graphics and crunching the numbers and pace of gameplay but you don't want to play with others why not just play on any live server? Why do you need a TLP? Why do you choose a TLP? I am betting the population and community is a big reason why people choose TLPs over live servers where they could box what ever they want whenever they want without being bothered by other people. So why a TLP over live?

People do not box because they dislike the nature of the game.

I box because playing one character was boring. I played a solo class (Druid) added an enchanter to increase the things I could log in and do with out having to rely on someone else to be online during my play time with the class I need to accomplish things.

When people are online and want to come join I generally will drop either box if the group is full depending on what the incoming character class is.

I was 36 years old when EQ came out working a full time job over 60 hours per week.

Play time was a premium and I could not afford to waste 20-30 minutes putting a group together every time I logged in, so I had a competent 2 box combination so I could get started immediately and add players if they got online..

But make no mistake...If I want to play a game I pay a subscription for and login and play with just my two characters and ignore the rest of the server....that is my right. I do not have to play the game in a way you approve of.
