Likely hit a critical failure where it does not return certain materials compared to a normal failure. Did the output say you created an alternate item or something along the lines of that? You failed the combine so hard that you cracked your planing tool in half (would be by design/lore).
Are you sure it is a bug, I seem to remember an old bug report for some of the shawl quets, where a ts item was intended to be consumened ?
Usually it's like a pottery, jewelry, or smithing mold. It's rare I do tools like the planing tools, hammer, scissors, etc.
