Something about Wizard DPS on TLP

Depends on your play style, you can really push Wizard to be the #1 DPS. It can be challenging at times but I think that’s where fun is. As an outsider, it was funny to see how some (including TLP vet, so call ‘top’ OW guild leadership, etc.) view Wizard especially when it comes down to their DPS and related raid composition…

Regarding to wizard dps on trash mob. My stands are always:
    * While I agree on everyone should contribute to killing trash in some degree, the mana regen mechanics in this game make it almost irrelevant for wizard.
    * Sure I can maintain out of mana as a wizard during the entire duration of a raid. It doesn't take much skill to do that. If you are trying to be the best, you ain't proving anything by showing me a zone parse. In fact if you are interested in zone parse, there is a good chance that you don't really understand individual boss encounter.

    Anyway, these are my notes:

    Clarifications:
    · Since Aradune is the only TLP I played on, all data are based on settings on that server, such as Mitigation of the Mighty (70% actual spell damage), sword pet can’t be buffed, focus effects unlocks in Luclin, and etc.
    · All parses below are from Open World targets (you can tell by kill times). I personally don’t count DZ mainly because people end up in different splits, and many of these encounters originally were not designed to be killed with a lot less people.
    · GamParse (for parse) and GINA (for AE triggers) are a must. I have custom GINA triggers on each encounter only for AEs that affect Wizard.

    General Tips:
    · Wizard is all about managements: mana, aggro, and resists.
    · No bard, no parse. The most crucial part of Wizard DPS is having a Bard in your group, hands down. Resisted songs + regen + debuff chants are your best friends. I’ll let my 401k goes first before letting a Bard goes.
    · General speaking, wait for debuff (such as Malo) before start DPSing.
    · If tank dies, you may want to slow down DPS for a few seconds.
    · If a mob is a Belly caster, meaning you must be standing right next to mob in order land spells.
    · Always turn on auto-attack for extra melee damage and weapon proc.
    · Use Harvest often and wisely.
    · Buff from your EPIC staff create tons of aggro, avoid using it mid-fight.
    · Pay close attention to ratio between your mana and boss HP. Your goal should always be using mana the most effective way (rain) while be able to empty all your mana. This is especially important during a long fight where raid DPS is very high. In this case, you should use other damage spells in between rains.
    · Getting a sense of how fast a boss HP is dropping. This is useful toward the end of the fight, where if you cast a rain, it may only have time to land once. In this case, a single big DD definitely give you more DPS.
    · I personally do not recommend the following tricks (It is like asking your partner how good you are during sex): Having Necromancer to be your personal mana battery; Getting CoTH mid fight by Mage, cancelling all aggro; Name a pet from other character to match your character so all damage count toward you; Manaburn, die, get full mana rez by Cleric, then continue to DPS; and etc.
Don’t forget food and drink with stats.
    Misty Thicket Picnic (STR/STA/WIS/INT +5, HP +20, Mana +30)
    Qeynos Afternoon Tea (DEX/WIS/INT/AGI +5)
Holy Cake (All Resist + 5)
Kaladim Constitutional (STA +5, All Resist + 5) – unlocks in Luclin
Don’t forget Potions, they add up. I dedicate a hot bar entirely just for them!
Elixir of Divine Endurance (All Resist + 10)
Null Potion (Magic Resist + 25)
Potion of Antibody (Disease Resist + 25)
Potion of Cold (Skip this one, it doesn’t stack with Elemental Armor for whatever reason)
Potion of Heat (Cold Resist + 25)
Potion of Purity (Poison Resist + 25)
Greater Mystical Infusion (Mana pool + 100)
Elixir of Greater Concentration (Mana regen)
Cold Awareness (Cold spell mana preservation)
Heat Awareness (Fire spell mana preservation)
Magic Awareness (Magic spell mana preservation)
    Ethira's Poison Antidote (Cure Poison)
    Kithar's Disease Treatment (Cure Disease)
Distillate of Divine Healing (Direct heal) – this is great when you pull aggro
Distillate of Celestial Healing (Dot heal)
Potion of Greater Rejuvenation (HP regen) – Skip this one once you have the Fungus staff
Distillate of Spirituality (Mana regen) - unlocks in PoP

This is a DPS rating I use to measure how well Wizard parse on each encounter:
A - There is no reason you can’t top the parse. Worst case, you’ll still be in top 3
B - There is a good chance you can top the parse, but usually end up around top 5
C – It is theoretically possible (remember that girl you had a huge crash on). Usually stay within top 10
D – Why don’t you go level up your 2H Blunt instead?!

    Classic
DPSing in classic is pretty straightforward. With Shadow Knight tanking, you don’t need to worry about pulling aggro 95% of the time. You can even begin your spell rotation as soon as the tank is in position. Also, parsing in classic is very much based on luck, this is especially true when competing with other Wizards. If your spells are resisted or partially resisted. Other wizards WILL parse better than you.

Plane of Sky (E) – What is this? I don’t recognize this place. Seriously tho, for Protector of Sky, both Rend or Ice Comet works. For Gorgalosk, use Conflagration. Other than that, you won’t be able to land any spells on other Boss, so this is THE best zone to level up your weapon skills such as 1H Blunt, which you will need for the extra auto-attack melee damage and weapon proc between casting. I will cover the rest of the PoS in Kunark (where Lure becomes available)

Buff: Remember your MR potions (Elixir of Divine Endurance and Null Potion). You don’t really need other resists (maybe PR for Draco DoT) in classic.
Must - Clarity (Mana regen), Brilliance (INT). Resist buffs such as Group Resist Magic (MR), Resistant Skin (PR/DR), Dead Man Floating (PR),
Optional - HP/STA buffs such as Resolution, Symbol, Skin, etc.

Itemization: Focus on getting Magic Resisted jewelries and gears, even if they don’t come with any Intelligence or Mana. All dragons AE fear are magic based. If you are feared, you don’t DPS, period. Many of the so called ‘Best in Slot’ items only focus on INT/Mana, which don’t increase your DPS at all. None of the raid loots matter for Wizard in Classic, you can also skip White Dragon Hide if Focus Effects unlocks in Luclin or later.

    Kunark
Kunark is such an interesting expansion for Wizard. For the very first time, you don’t need to pray for your spells not getting resisted. The ‘luck’ portion from Classic matters a lot less. Why? Aggro management! With Warrior being the main tank instead of SK, you really need to start “learning” how to DPS with different Warrior. I have very different spell rotations on the same mob depends on which Warrior is tanking. Ranging from Rain > Sunstrike > Repeat, Rain > Draught x 2 > Repeat, to Rain > Concussion x 3 > Repeat. That being said, get your Concussion quest done ASAP, you will heavily rely on it.
In addition, I highly recommend you have live DPS enable from GamParse. Ideally, at the beginning of the fight, you want to be the 2nd highest DPS wizard, then slowly passing the 1st later. This way, if the 1st Wizard die due to aggro issue, then you can react accordingly. Another strategy if you can land Sunstrike is to wait even longer before DPSing. That way, you can pump out Tears of Solusek / Sunstrike without worrying too much about aggro, and quickly catch up to the top. One more thing, If Lure is all you will be using, you can DPS asap without aggro problem.
Also, make friends with Cleric, ask for HP buffs and even Divine Intervention. Last but not least, prepare to die a lot more than Classic, especially during the beginning of the expansion where Warrior is adjusting to being main tank and you are learning how individual perform differently. There is a saying as a Wizard in Kunark, “If you ain’t dying, you ain’t trying.”

Severilous (B) - Rotation: Flaming Sword of Xuzl (can’t be buffed, cast as soon as mob in position) > Lure of Ice x N > Tears of Solusek > Repeat
Note: Semi belly caster. MR songs/buffs/potions/gears to resist dragon AE fear. If you have a tank who can hold aggro and mob is being fully Fire debuff, you can use Tears of Solusek which can easily put it back to A rate. If not, Melee usually out DPS you here.

    Veeshan's Peak
VP is by far one of my favorite zones to DPS. Between the fact that Warrior can’t hold much aggro in Kunark and the massive resists some of these encounters require, it’s satisfying to top the parse when you have everything lined up (bard, resist gears, and accurate assessment of aggro management).

Silverwing (B) – Rotation: Flaming Sword of Xuzl (can’t be buffed, cast as soon as mob in position) >Lure of Ice x N > Tears of Solusek >Repeat
Note: Semi belly caster. MR (If I remember correctly you only need 200 which can be easily achieve). If you Lure of Ice very early. Hold on Tears of Solusek until HP 60% or so. Pay attention to your live DPS chart and watch out for aggro once you start using Tears of Solusek.

Phara Dar(C) – Rotation: Flaming Sword of Xuzl (can’t be buffed, cast as soon as mob in position) >Lure of Lightning / Lure of Flame > Repeat
Note: Semi belly caster. Only need 200 MR to fully resist its AE stun, you don’t even need a Bard to reach that. Also, most Wizard will just use Lure of Flame, but if coordinate with a Bard correctly and let him play Denon's Bereavement full time, with some luck, you can land Lure of Lightning fully, which offer more base damage than fire lure. Melee DPS dominates this fight, highest I ever parse was 4th.

Note: Semi belly caster. Stack disease resist to fully resist its AE. If not, with enough HP regen / heals, you can ‘semi-dodge’ this fight, meaning you cast Tears of Solusek, wait 3 waves to land, then dodge instead of following the timer (which only have time for 2 waves of rain to land).

Buff: Don’t forget potions for extra mana regen, mana pool, and mana preservation. Also resist potions. If you get a Bard, double mana songs and all kind of resist songs.
Must - Gift of Pure Thought (Mana regen), Enlightenment (INT), Resist buffs such as Group Resist Magic (MR), Resistant Skin (PR/DR), Elemental Armor (FR/CR), O'Keil's Radiation (FR), Circle of Winter/Summer (FR/CR), Talisman of Shadoo (PR), Talisman of Jasinth (DR), Dead Man Floating (PR), etc.
Optional - HP/STA buffs such as Heroism, Symbol of Marzin, Riotous Health, Natureskin, Talisman of the Brute, and etc. Also, Divine Intervention plays a significant role when you pull aggro, literally the difference between parse or no-parse.

Itemization: Get yourself a Manarobe, seriously, that’s the only must-bid item in this expansion. Other than that, focus on getting resist jewelries and gears, even if they don’t come with any Intelligence or Mana. You WILL need them in order to parse well in VP.

    Bonus
I did a few mana regen tests in Kunark with Manarobe, Enchanter buff (C - Gift of Pure Thought), and Bard song (SONG - Cantata of Replenishment): Cast Shield of Magi twice, then time how long it takes mana regen back to 100%. There are three parts in this test, “sit” means simply meditate and wait; “manarobe” means using manarobe non-stop; “sit + manarobe” on the other hand, is aiming to receive server mana tick then use manarobe immediately. Meaning sit > receive server mana tick (once every 5 sec) > use manarobe (3 sec cast time) > sit > repeat. Similar to ‘Canni-Dance’ from Shaman.

Sometimes when you aren’t getting mana from manarobe after the mana tick; Sometimes after you got mana from manarobe the server will tick backward (lose mana) before the next server tick.

    Velious
Both raid quality and quantity go up a notch in Velious, it has a lot to offer. As a wizard, the very first thing you should keep in mind is getting these 5 new spells as soon as possible: Porlos' Fury (An upgrade version of Sunstrike for dragons in Temple of Veeshan, easiest to get, no need faction as you can charm a quest NPC); Ice Spear of Solist (3rd best cold spells in terms of damage per mana, also second easiest to get as it has a chance to dropped from over 100 different mobs in multiple zones); Hsagra's Wrath (An upgrade version of Sunstrike for giants. You need to grind Claws of Veeshan faction for this quest); Ancient Greater Concussion (You’ll need high raid attention and luck to get this. This in my opinion is by far the most important Velious wizard spell. 2 Greater Concussion = 3 regular Concussion, only with 2/3 amount of mana. YOU NEED THIS BADBOY!); Ancient Destruction of Ice (This has the lowest drop rate, so it’s the hardest to get. It complements Tears of Prexus really well. If you are waiting to get this, use Ice Spear of Solist as a replacement. Once you own both Ancient Destruction of Ice and Ice Spear of Solist, you can truly maximum your cold DPS).
In addition, thanks to how encounters are designed, raid is able to pre-build aggro on a lot of boss. Using Mage EPIC pet to build aggro on dragons that don’t move, or kiting giants in Kael to build aggro. Either way, it’s a great news for Wizard. Please keep in mind that I personally time how long we build aggro on each boss. My spell rotation looks very different when we pre-build aggro for 1 minute, 2 minutes, or 4 minutes. As you can tell, there is no ‘static’ or ‘set’ spell rotations, I may begin with a familiar rotation but the rest often changes depends on raid DPS (ratio between boss HP and my remaining mana), or who’s tanking, etc.
Always summon your sword pet behind the boss (or risk it getting killed). Also remember to turn on auto-attack, especially once you have Staff of the Silent Star, that 280 fire Lure proc add up quick with DEX buffs. Another thing you want to watch out is how fast a boss HP is dropping compare to your remaining mana. Your goal should always be emptying all your mana without pulling aggro, while at the same time using Manarobe to regen mana.
Finally, I would like to talk about how you integrate rain spells with Concussion and Manarobe since both will be a key part of your DPS in Velious. As always, since rain spells offer the best DPM (damage per mana), maximum its usage is your number one goal, meaning use it as soon as it comes off cooldown. Now if managing aggro is your priority, after casting rain, you will Concussion three times, there will be a 2 seconds delay to start your next rain, and that’s okay. If you want to keep your next rain on schedule, you can Concussion twice Manarobe once, or Concussion once Manarobe twice, spell order makes no difference here. If conserving mana is your priority, you would Manarobe three times, next rain will be on schedule. Now there is trick here, you can actually ‘sneak-in’ a Concussion between Manarobe x 3 and has very little delay with a specific rotation: Rain > Manarobe > Concussion > Manarobe > Manarobe or Rain > Manarobe > Manarobe > Concussion > Manarobe ONLY delay your next rain by 0.5 second. Consider Manarobe does generate aggro, and that 0.5 second delay totally worth a Concussion in my opinion. Similarly, you can actually fit two Manarobe here as well: Tears of Prexus > Ancient Destruction of Ice > Manarobe > Manarobe.
The following chart shows casting order and delay on the next rain:
    rain > concus > concus > concus > 2s

rain > manaro > manaro > manaro > no delay

rain > manaro > concus > concus > no delay

    rain > manaro > concus > manaro > manaro > 0.5s
    rain > manaro > manaro > concus > manaro > 0.5s
    rain > manaro > manaro > manaro > concus > 2s

    rain > manaro > concus > concus > concus > 4s

I personally prefer fire due to his low HP. You can use lure but won’t be able to parse high. I killed him only a few times and didn’t have many lucks with rains / parses.

Note: Wizard on paper can top CT 2.0, on paper… This is one of those encounters which it is rain-able but extremely difficult to top parse. Mainly because there is no pre-build aggro; its AE (Avatar Power) constantly interrupt your cast and you need to ducked it (if not waste even more DPS time). It is easy to get aggro, and get feared by him. My personal best is #2, and parse within top 5 only a few times, mostly staying within top 10.

Once I feel comfortable nuking, then Tears of Solusek>Hsagra's Wrath (Sunstrike) > Ancient Greater Concussion. I would even switch to Tears of Solusek>Hsagra's Wrath (Sunstrike) > Draught of Fire If I have mana toward the end. Generally speaking, Wizard is able to stay in top 1-3 with ease.

Then transitioning into Tears of Solusek > Sunstrike > Ancient Greater Concussion base on raid DPS, ratio of Statue HP and your remaining mana. You should end up with Tears of Solusek>Sunstrike > Draught of Fire toward the end. It has twice amount of HP compare to Vindi, but you shouldn’t run out of mana on this fight. Well-written & detailed post that could prove helpful to other wizards who may be struggling, clearly a lot of effort went into that.
Unless someone can do a better post and show better results from their methods then they should maybe keep a lid on their derision, anyone can point & jeer from the side-lines, actual worthwhile critique that offers a way to improve takes way more effort & opens them up to criticism too.

So, you only count the parses that you’re on top? DZs don’t count because the fights last too long? It doesn’t count, if you don’t have a bard?

This is one of the most informative posts on this forum. I'm gob stomped many of the responses are negative.

Who cares if a wizard preserves their mana on trash pulls in order to save it for raid encounters? Wouldn't expect a wizzy to dump their mana bar too low on trash. Just low enough to where it can quickly recover. There would be a bigger issue if the opposite was true.

    I can taste the salt.

So your problem is that you made the wrong choice on the very most important choice there is?
  19. Machen New Member

I care, if by doing so the wizard slows down the raid from completing everything in a timely manner and keeps me and 71 others from going to bed early. The trash is not insignificant . Raids generally spend far more time on trash than on bosses. If you are playing a class that could contribute significantly on trash but decide not to, because you only want to maximize your boss parse, that's bs. I'm going to build my raids around people who help me send everyone home early.

No problem with wizards pacing themselves on trash so they are ready to go hard when the boss comes. But sitting afk on all the trash as this guy reportedly did? .

Was simply making a joke that wizard dps write up is like a novel where as monks just face roll and top parses.
