Veteran trying to play again just for fun

So I think I need to be called a newbie...

So, how do I solo dungeons in this game? I just tried to walk into HPK and got my butt royally handed to me. There are no groups in this game, nobody in chat, nobody even in the same zone. Is there any way to play? Like do Mercenaries actually buff me enough to play dungeons?

    Did you do the tutorial?

    Welcome back!

As CatsPaws suggested, do the Gloomingdeep Mines tutorial. It will teach you the game and much of what has changed, as well as get you some gear for your class and a mercenary.

As for your other questions, what server do you play on? Some servers are more populated than others during certain times, and yes, even on Vox (where I am) no one really talks in any world chat. I rely on my guild or just watch You Tube as I play.

There is also the Hero's Journey in your /ach section. This takes you through many zones starting in Crescent Reach. You can get gear and other items as rewaqrds for completing quests there.

It took me 2 hours to figure out where all the menus were hidden so no I don't even know where the tutorial is LOL

    Where might it be?

OH yeah the Hero's Journey thing.

Oh hey another question - is there a UI for high def screens? I can't see my icons very well.
  5. Tatanka Joe Schmo

The tutorial is only accessed when you roll a new char. You can either start in Crescent Reach, or the Tutorial. So you may not have access on your current char, at this point.

But don't fret, there are NPCs in PoK which teach you all the same stuff, so you can just do that. I did, a little over a year ago, on my main from 2000. There are achievements related, and since players had no way to go back and access the tutorial, they added these. My guess is, a "Find" (control-F) in PoK will list the Tutorial NPCs for you.

    Hero's Journey is something else.

Is PoK Kunark or Planes of Karana?

Also, do you still lose tons of EXP when you die?

Are characters still hard locked to "hate" levels (like is my Dark Elf hottie still absolutely hated by a lot of human guards?)?
  7. Skuz I am become Wrath, the Destroyer of Worlds.

Plane of Knowledge, the Karanas are usually referred to separately as NK, EK, WK, SK

You still lose some, not sure it was ever "tons".

They were never "locked" as such, factions can be changed in most cases, although a few exceptions exist, with enough effort you can be liked everywhere even if you started out being hated by everyone like Iksars are. It just depends if that's something you really want to invest a lot of time into. Most cities have city-specific factions, class-specific factions & race specific factions & working enough of them to be able to safely travel a city is not a small amount of effort.

For example having killed a lot of minotaurs over various expansions I am on ally terms with the guard faction of Ak Anon, and the King as an Ogre, but I am KoS to the shop owners.

Factions in the early game are mainly a roleplaying element.

Later into the game factions play an important role in accessing spells/combat abilities from faction-based vendors.
  8. Eknhomaht Journeyman

Yeah I was wondering because I never heard of PoK so I was confused. I quit soon after Kunark.

I quit soon after I lost 1 hours worth of grinding in a period of 10 minutes of dying. That is lots. But it sounds like it might have changed? It was my level 45 ranger on a really bad raid of Lady Vox.

They locked a lot of factions shortly after the game came out. One of the tricks was to use the Wine Quest in Niriak while partied up with a human who was invisible at the entrance of the zone to get the human up to amiable. The devs decided they wanted the Dark Elves to always be at war with the Humans so they nerfed that trick (at the time if you mentioned Nerf on the messageboards you got banned), they also removed some of the Qeynos Guard faction from BB, making it only somewhat possible to gain enough human faction to visit a Necromancer trainer in Qeynos, but not enough to enter the city if you were hated.

It sounds like this might have changed? Is it now possible and how is it possible for humans to gain Dark Elf Faction and enter the city?

Interesting, is there a guide somewhere? I used to use Alla, but a lot of resources seem to have been removed from that site - either that or I'm not navigating it very well.

Ok yeh, please make a level 1 character and do the tutorial. It will help you tons and show you the basic steps again. You do not have to go thru the whole tutorial if you don't want. Just do the quests for the guys around the middle. You can stay in there till level 11 and then you have to go out.

The Hero's Journey and the Tutorial are not the same. The tutorial in Gloomingdeep can only be entered by players who are level 11 and under. The Hero's Journey can be done at any level. It's more of a guideline to show where to go hunt or do missions etc

There is a second tutorial in POK for stuff like the baz, housing, guilds, etc. You can do that one at any level and will get you some more free things. It does not teach you the same as the one in Gloomingdeep. Gloomingdeep will cover mercs, armor, weapons, etc etc all in less than one hour.

Now when you die under level 6 you do not loose experience. After that you can summon your body and get a rez. In the Lobby which is in POK

When you are ready To leave the Gloomindeep tutoiral you can go to Arias and say "I am ready to leave" This will put you in POK -that is where you can buy every spell up to level 80-85? Meet with others, do banking, buy new merc or supplies etc etc etc. It is not a fighting zone.

Or to leave you can look for the waterfall to the right and you will see a dark cave. Go into that and it will put you in Cresent Reach which is the new starting zone.

Once done with the tutorial you can go back to your higher character, if your playing one or just continue with the new one just made.

Also you will need to download free maps. Everyone uses either Goods or Brewells while about 90% of us download both and switch between them in game.

It says I am at my limit or is that just my limit for 1 server? I had 7 characters before I quit.

OMG no more /loc and /y LF RES! PLS HELP! 45 MIN OF KITING AT RISK!?!

    YAY!

    Ooooooo

I'm at my character limit so I don't think I will keep the newbie one.

Oooooh ty! Yeah Allas seems to be dead.
  11. CatsPaws No response to your post cause your on ignore

Alla is not dead and is still used extensively. Some of the stuff is old old old but some stuff really has not changed. However there are many other guides that are good also. The best thing is to use Google and type in (without the ") something of what your looking for , like "guide for level 10 in eq" and it will bring up a few results to choose from.

Is your account Free to play or the old account you had -it would be called Silver- or a paying account?
Here is a nice chart at the bottom of the page of what you get between the different accounts:
PS I got this by using Google and typing in Free to play in eq.
    https://everquest.fanra.info/wiki/Free_to_play

Yes you can gain your experience back on death and better yet you can do it with a healer merc that you can hire to follow you around and heal you all the time. Death and mercs are covered in the Gloomingdeep tutorial.

If your at your character limit then yes just flip to another server like Tunare or whatever, make a new guy and go thru it.

EDIT: Correction, I am apparently a Silver Player.... OOOO the launch button said F2P but the inside of it says silver. YAY!

Oooo Tunare survived the purge! I remember that name.

Going through the tutorial even of on another server is a worthwhile endeavour as so many things will have changed at the low level by now you may as well consider yourself a complete newbie & the tutorial is a great way to relearn the game.

There are also some newbie guides on Youtube you may find helpful & the advanced loot system will likely feel very alien to you until you get accustomed to it.

Ok so now my final question - Are there custom User Interfaces to increase the size of buttons and graphics? I can barely see mine. I'm on a Surface 4 Pro and it's so high def that the icons and what not are super small.
  15. CatsPaws No response to your post cause your on ignore

So you only have 2 character slots? eww. :D

You might be signing in with the wrong account. Most players from that long ago have something wrong on log in or are logging in wrong. Like a pw or the name etc. Go thru this to make sure:
    https://help.daybreakgames.com/hc/en-us/articles/217481518-How-do-I-recover-my-account-

Its not really a huge deal anymore since they made it so ALL accounts get ALL Veteran rewards on creation:

haha I edited my post after you loaded the page :( I made some mass confusion. Naw I actually have silver apparently :D

But I do appreciate the links. I'll check that out!

As far as gaining factions, depends on why you want the faction to begin with, your home city will generally have everything that you could need, some epics may require venturing into other cities where you might need invisibility, illusions or factions to be able to visit safely, even then it's rarely straightforward and may still need to be wary of certain areas.

Some city's own race may even have opposing factions within it, for example the Necromancers of Neriak being opposed to other Class factions within Neriak relating to the lore about the King & Queen hating each other so much.

My advice here is to look up the factions you need on Allakhazam and look at the lists of npcs you can kill to raise faction, the quests you can do to raise faction & bear in mind the negative hits you will take doing those.
    e.g:
    https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/faction.html?faction=77
    https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/faction.html?faction=78

As far as guides on faction these are very few & far between are generally old, outdated & no longer maintained.

Two that I have referred to myself on occasion are the following:

If your account is that old you probably have maxed Loyalty currency on you (5760). There is a vendor in PoK that sells useful things for it, including these dolls you can buy and click that will give your account permanent access to another character slot.

So you can buy 3, and now you have access to 7 characters while silver, or 11 if you subscribe.

You earn a small amount of loyalty weekly passively, so it builds back up. Some things you can't buy unless subscribed (bags of platinum mostly, can buy those click and get around 13,000 platinum per bag), but things like the character dolls and gold tickets (can be traded in to casino for old things that no longer drop) can be purchased while silver or FTP.

For faction, don't forget the new faction window (less than 2 years old now).

Type /faction in game and a window comes up listing all expansions and pretty much all factions in the game. It will tell you your exact numerical level, and if you hover in the right spot there are tool tip functions to show you how much faction you need to get to the next faction level.

If you last played during vox raids 20 years ago, you have a LONG way to go. Yes, the old lower level game is dead unless you get in on the ground floor of a TLP (which are good and bad, require a subscription, and are way more toxic than traditional live servers).

For the UI, you can download custom UIs or pieces from www.eqinterface.com.

But if you use a custom UI, they can break any patch that edits that piece. I just make a simple folder, and the only elements I keep in it are the 2nd generation spell and buff icons, because I feel they are WAY cleaner and clearer than the new ones, and it never breaks. You can adjust all your windows though, and then right click and lock the window. You can edit their opacity, you can change font size in a window by typing /chatfontsize #, smaller number is smaller text size, larger number is larger text size, only affects that window.

Can also select one window where you only type in that window, makes it easier IMO once you have your windows set up the way you like.
