But, from my limited experience (Halloween MM in like 2013), the problem is mercs either maintain their levels or their spells are not intended for the mission. For instance, a cleric merc would keep health up fairly easily as opposed to the struggles of a healer MM template. Of course, all of this may have changed since then.

Ive only used mercs on one mission. I think it was the hive in undershore. Mercs were downleveled to 70 (same as monster-players), and afaict and read up on they are really not that good. The only point to using them was that I could have 3 healers that I didnt need to micro manage.
