Magician Race? A Question (Dark Elf?)

So I would like to make a magician. My race option that I'm comfortable with right now is a Dark Elf Magician. However there doesn't seem to be a lot of DE Magicians around. I asked around and most folks say to go with Gnome or a High Elf. I wonder if I would be hindering myself by playing an evil race with a class that usually associated with GOOD/Neutral races. Would I have issues getting into places because I'm evil aligned? I'm not entirely sure if that makes much of a difference nowadays?

I'm not a huge fan of the tiny races but I suppose being a gnome and neutral would have it's advantages over lets say a DE whom is restricted to just Evil towns. I suppose this is even the case if I went Agnostic on my DE Magician. I don't really like the Erudite or their hooded appearance (nor their large foreheads lol). High Elves I suppose are okay but I'd rather be a Dark Elf if I'm going to be an Elf.

So how much of a disadvantage would I be from picking Dark Elf Magician? This seems to be the least picked race combo apparently for Magician it seems. (Even compared with Humans).

Any opinions or advice would be nice.

there isn't a TLP server in any era at the moment where your magician race would matter in the slightest outside of aesthetics/rp/origin.

On live it matters even less.

I also see PLENTY of dark elf magicians. Pick the race you like, it quite literally doesn't matter at all.

If I HAD to come up with a downside to dark elf is that their origin is pretty inconvenient if you are trying to get to the PoK book compared to some other races, but not by much.

So the Magician being Dark Elf would have an issue because he is Evil Aligned? I didn't see many DE magicians when I did /who. Then again that doesn't count Anon/RP and such I think. Also I have NO idea how to do a search without the OFFLINE people showing up in /who it's really annoying.

Like Rotlust said, it really doesn't matter. The only time it does is on TLP's when in original content. Choosing the agnostic religion makes it even less of an issue.

I don't know what server you are on but as for choosing a race the first thing to ask is "Does any race + deity combo give something that I can use and cannot get with another combo?"

Most of the time deity won't matter at all though there might be some advantage to something like a sol ro worshipping erudite wizard.
Gnomes can tinker, do you want to do tradeskills? If so go gnome.
If you're in TSS or later Drakkin get a breath weapon that's essentially a DD/DoT/debuff click on a 5 minute timer that's AE directional. It's actually not a bad little perk
If you are a class that can be Iksar then they have a small but measurable AC bonus.
Be an agnostic human if faction concerns you
Ogre's famously have frontal melee stun immunity but stun immunity for both melee and spells from all angles comes in AA's for almost every class IIRC so long term not important really

Outside of these just go for looks and have fun

I play on the Firiona Vie server. I'm not entirely sure what perks a DE would give me other than hide. Few people have mentioned I should go Agnostic to just save myself some trouble. Other then that a few in game have told me that I would be wasting my time with a DE Magician since it doesn't bring anything to the table other than looks. Which is funny because I think they look neat. So that gets a plus in my book. Not really sure what High Elf would bring. But I really wouldn't want to play an Erudite. So that really only leaves DE, Gnome and High Elf. (I think I have access to Drakin but I'm very unfamiliar with that race). Not a huge fan of the High Elves but they are at least slightly better than gnomes because they aren't small. It's the camera angle from gnomes that drives me crazy after awhile.

Dark Elves are but the one true race.

/who all wont show you anyone who is anon or RPG. I am RPG, so I wont show up on your /who all.

All other races are inferior. AC or the ability to tinker is quite irrelevant to the discussion.

Hide might matter for a warrior, but mages get invis.

Wood elves are an acceptable substitute as our identical but less blue cousins that fill the class gaps, but even then, wood elves need to go to the casino and convert to the proper race.

LOL this was a good post.

So what you are saying is, ignore everything else and just go with Dark Elf. Even though Hide might be useless since Magician get invis? Sadly Wood Elves are not a Magician race, only High Elves which fall under your "all other races are inferior" lol, including Erudites.

In all seriousness I've narrowed it down to Dark Elf and Gnome for the moment. I'm leaning towards Dark Elf, regardless of the fact that Gnome has tinker. Just not a fan of small races, but being neutral does have its advantages.

Unless you are planning to do a tour of the old world I don't think faction matters any more. It would probably save you some grief being agnostic but I'm not sure how much even that matters in modern EQ.

In all seriousness, if you want to tinker then roll a gnome and get the dark elf mask from the casino.

I don't care enough about tinkering or anything else enough to roll anything but a dark elf and I am an enchanter with permanent illusion. However my ranger alt is a wood elf which eventually got he casino mask so now he is permanently a dark elf.

Since the casino can be costly (there are some tricks to make it cheaper AKA a "casino kit") you can also buy illusions from the DBC store, but not the dark elf.

The reason I mentioned wood elves, is because they use the same graphic as the dark elves. You may not have noticed it, but wood elves ARE dark elves, but the color is different. That's why I call them our less blue cousins.

If the ONLY reason for not playing a gnome is the height, I would just play a gnome and wait for enough DBC from the montly sub to buy one of the illusions you like, and use that until you have enough loyalty to get golden tickets and make some friends to acquire a casino kit so you can get the DEF mask. I think all of the DBC illusions are heirloom, so if you reroll your mage you can pass it via shared bank to the new character.

You may be right. At this point it may be best just to rely on illusions. But then I wouldn't be a true Dark Elf... lol just a fake one.. hiding among the true bloods.

Dark Elf is the master race for all classes tbh.

I got a DE mage. She is doing quite well.

The camera perspective of small races... do yourself a favor and get used to 3rd person view.
  14. Panikker Elder

Went gnome and I did not care about how it looks ..LOL
  15. Ulain Journeyman

Live server = your race literally doesn't matter. If you really want tinker just make a gnome alt. End of discussion.

The only real drawback to DE casters is the Origin point, which is three zones away from the PoK book. Not a huge deal at all, but slightly less convenient than some. Faction won't matter, and you'll look dapper.

I always play small races. Elves are okay, but anything larger than an Elf feels slow and clunky to me after spending so much time closer to the ground ;)
