I just came back from pre-DBG, and this is my first patch with them. I must say wow. 10hrs scheduled?? It doesn't take that long for a whole new expansion. Bugs are to be expected, but not ones that 18hrs later I still can't run the patcher. And scheduling 10hrs for a routine patch makes no sense. Test server exists for a reason, to TEST the patches so the major issues like this are found and fixed before pushing it out live. I know it doesn't take 10hrs to do an update, they could probably create a brand new server with all the 19yrs of spaghetti code on it in that time. All o know is this is not a good first impression to me, not that other changes have all been good impressions either, but this is bad. If this is what ppl have dealt with since DBG took over, I'd hate to ask how they plan to prolong life past the 20th anniversary next year. I was here for the big 30day downtime SOE hack, that something entirely different, and can be worked around once you know the timeframe. Guess I was silly to assume the patch would be been a few hours, and long ready to go before I tried logging in the first time I can before midnight. That said, ALL games have bugs, many game devs are known for a lot more bugs than EQ ever had on an ongoing basis, yet they still sell and sell big, but an old game like EQ is expected to have figured out how to prevent the size bugs in this patch from reaching live, through their testing. If these issues were in the patch, why weren't they discovered? If they weren't in the patch, but we're a product of an incompetent implementing said patch, then they should be fired. Now, I'm not on paid sub now as I always used to be, though o have gold via kronos on my accts, and I haven't bought new expacs yet for a variety of reasons. One of which being assessing the performance of DBG, and assessing the value of the expacs themselves. I would happily buy the older expacs while I decided on full commitment, but that's not a possibility. 10bucks for TBM, 20 FOR EOK, 35 FOR RoS makes sense to me, in the end you'd get 65 instead of 35 per acct, but instead you might just get 0 if I continue to find the game absolutely unplayable like tonight. In 6 yrs, I gave SOE in neighborhood of 6grand, will daybreak ever get a dime? I hope so, but it's up to them.
Windows 7 (which works with EQ) has been out for nearly 9 years. If whomever hasn't been able to upgrade their OS and/or hardware in almost a decade then maybe they need to stop playing temporarily and reevaluate their situation.
Some people feel that everything Microsoft has put out after Windows 7 is garbage though. For me I can't stand the smartphonelike interfaces of the new OSes.
At the very least Pay for the day wasted.... I work... and i am almost at bed time. I happened to get off work early to find out servers should have been up 2 hours before i got home. Fix it and don't charge me for the day is all i care about.
For the guy mot on 7+: I feel for you. Not bc I don't have 7s and 10s to play on, I do, but I much prefer my xp64 as it has a much smaller footprint and eq doesn't NEED to be on 7+ and more than Diablo2 does. It's been a bigger pain to get eq running on 7+ than it ever was on xp. Need this which needs that which needs that all installed before you can even start the exe, then this is still needed, and don't forget run as admin, and redirect to save on another partition (should be done regardless of OS) so that you don't have to download the whole game again when a Windows update breaks your IS, and that has happened many times in MS history, particularly in 7. Using 7 or higher isn't necessarily an upgrade, to those saying you should be on it by now bc it's 9 yrs old, and the machines to play eq on certainly don't have to be less than 10 yrs old either, they barely need to be within 15yrs, unless were bottom of the line when new. The game will still run on a single core cpu with 4gigs of ram (2 plus your is footprint anyway) and these says an onboard graphics, or an old 8500 nvidia card will more than suffice. Nothing in that says hey do is too old to handle this lol. Edit:stupid phone autocomplete
LOL you guys realize they up patching an almost 20 year old game?! I know daybreak didn't develop the game but if they can't get something right that's been running for almost 20 years, they might want to check into other investments. smhl..
I don't expect it to happen, but for the sake of curiosity, it would be interesting to know just what has happened and (looking towards the future) what it took to fix it. Us non-IT people are curious. I don't need every little gory detail, but some general overview would be fascinating reading to me. Oddly enough, I was talking to a lady who works at my wife's school and she mentioned that her son was hired a contract QA person for Daybreak. I don't know if he works on EQ though. Hmmmmmm
