Yesterday, as I logged in to play, people in general were chatting about what the largest zone. Commonlands, West Karana, the new Frontier Mountains? None of them are even a top 10.

The top 10 largest zones (in square miles):
    The Iceclad Ocean 20.1
    Timorous Deep 11.5
    East Wastes: Zeixshi-Kar's Awakening 5.3
    Eastern Wastes 5.3
    Firiona Vie 5
    The Overthere 4.9
    Lake of Ill Omen 4.8
    Scorched Woods 4.7
    The Buried Sea 4.4
    The Ocean Of Tears 4.4

Going a bit further, how big was each expansion:
    02-Kunark 55.4
    01-Original 45.6
    03-Velious 40.6
    14-TBS 18
    05-PoP 15.2
    04-Luclin 13.6
    20-RoF 13.2
    24-EoK 10.7
    13-TSS 9.5
    16-SoD 8.6
    09-OoW 7.4
    18-HoT 6.9
    08-GoD 6.7
    19-VoA 6.6
    15-SoF 6.6
    10-DoN 5.2
    25-RoS 4.8
    07-LDoN 4.7
    22-TDS 3.6
    21-CotF 3.5
    12-PoR 2.9
    17-Underfoot 2.9
    06-LoY 2.2
    11-DoD 2.1
    23-TBM 1.5

Another interesting fact, EverQuest is 298.1 square miles in size. One of the largest game worlds in existence.

I put some additional detail and other information on my website (www.eqmaps.info)

Thanks for the fun info! I always guessed Katta Castrum (TBS version) was the biggest zone in EQ but my memory must be of all the having to navigate in circles to get to certain zones.

Best post of the day, nice info.

Awesome post. Nice job. I knew Timorous Deep had to be top 3.

What's common between almost all of these areas?

Answer: they have a lot of empty ocean, or just water in general.

We should distinguish between areas that have a lot of empty space, and areas that are actually fully populated.

It's the biggest looking zone that I remember - standing at zone in and looking out it feels really large. But then when running around it really isn't that big.

How about the Dreadlands, it's a pretty big place
  9. Azbaelus Lorekeeper

That's pretty interesting stuff. For some reason, West Karana always felt like it took forever and a day to get anywhere.

Got a 10 largest dungeons list?

It was several months after release that they fixed the bug that let you warp across West Karana from the North Karana zone line near the river. If you jumped into the water there, you could swim under, and back towards North Karana, and you would warp to the West Karana/Qeynos Hills zone line. Very handy.

Disagree. Biggest zone, should just be biggest zone...period.

Is this the guy that steals goodurden's maps and pawns them off as his own? Or is that someone else?

Kunark remains supreme, as it should be.

    Dreadlands comes in at #14

    #11- Frontier Mountains 4
    #12- The Skyfire Mountains 3.9
    #13- Katta Castrum 3.8
    #14- The Dreadlands 3.8
    #15- The Western Wastes 3.7

Largest dungeon list is a bit tricky, depending on the definition. I'll assume something underground with dark corridors, where you generally have to be on your toes:

    #1: The Accursed Nest 61770956ft^2
#2: Heart of Fear: The Threshold 41611346ft^2
    #3: Solusek Ro's Tower 28614204ft^2
#4: Heart of Fear: The Rebirth 27512760ft^2
    #5: Kael Drakkal 18943449ft^2
#6: Crystallos, Lair of the Awakened 18905216ft^2
    #7: Korascian Warrens 15591023ft^2
    #8: Paludal Caverns 14961912ft^2
    #9: Toskirakk 14739946ft^2
    #10: The Cooling Chamber 14699940ft^2
    #11: Arthicrex 13149928ft^2
    #12: The Sleeper's Tomb 12248378ft^2
    #13: Crypt of Nadox 11490996ft^2
    #14: Temple of Droga 10626238ft^2
    #15: Dreadspire Keep 10412133ft^2

#1. Awesome. Graphs are just awesome.

#2. It'd be a fun study to evaluate the amount of raid content vs. zone number per expansion but I honestly wouldn't want anyone to suffer through those equations weighing the different factors. If I just took a guess I'd probably say PoP provided the most zones with the most raid content (essentially every one had raid encounters - or multiple). Answer serves no purpose but hey... EQ fiends are addicted to numbers these days.

    Cool topic.
How are you determining the area? I've only pulled up the EQAtlas maps and made rough estimates based on the grid size that mostly covers the reachable area (not just land), at least what is included on the EQAtlas map. Those estimates put The Overthere at 2.3 square miles and Western Plains of Karana at 3.2 square miles. That is, of course, assuming that a unit in /loc is 1 foot.
