Teach me how to Warrior

Need some advice for an under geared warrior trying to survive in an EoK world.

I have a mix of a few pieces of CotF raid gear and lvl bazaar gear from TDS.

I've been running my War, Enc, Ber team in T1 EoK zones trying gear up the Warrior... I'm not proud of it but sometimes I'll die even to single pulls if I don't have PDH running...

Anyway let me give your a rundown of how I kill trash mobs and maybe you guys can give me some pointers on better survival.

Pull mob, (usually with grasp) mash spam key letter(E). This key has taunt, bash, knee stile, gut punch, shield break, banestrike and maybe 1 or 2 other things I can't remember... I'll make sure to pretty much keep all these on cool downs. I have champions aura running. Commanding voice and the other one that goes in the song window that I can't remember also there's 2 of them that about 45 sec to a minute little song buffs. I'll keep stout defense running as the disc while PDH is active. I'll usually then hit blast of anger.

At this time both caster mercs are going ham on burn with chanter auras running. I have my chanter on a second computer who will then run his Tash, slow, dot dot dot key. Once that's going I'll switch back to zerker and get him in the mix...

Back to the war, make sure agro is good, make sure PDH is still on, mash E some more. Nuke on chanter, keep zerker stuff going etc.

When all this is going things go pretty smoothly... if an add comes chanter can punt or lex, warrior can tank 2 for a sec while that happens.
The problems come when PDH is down, this is where I start to struggle and will even die to yellow trash mobs. What should I be using to properly bridge the 2 minute gap of PDH?

Here's what I've been doing... I'll hit imperators command I think? The one the adds hp and ac. Still run stout and maybe have to even hit Dico and or something else warriors bulwork I think?... during this time I take significantly more damage and can even die. Obviously if things are looking bad I'll hit flash but that's only 7 sec or whatever.

Should I be using other discs instead of stout when PDH is down? Like that Rune disc or the stun disk? Those don't seem very good bit idk? Do you guys use those ever? Should I use hold the line or resplendent glory? I've been saving those for named, should I not save them?

Like I said I'm a bit under geared and I definitely need more stuff when PDH is down I'm just not sure what to save for named a lot of times if I get a bad pull I'll just full name disc to survive while chanter locks things diwn.

Just need a little more advice on what use when.

    Thanks for the help.

Honestly, what you're doing should be enough to keep you up with trash mobs in EOK if you're AC is high enough that you're not taking full on damage. You need to get your AC probably at least over 10K, obviously higher is better. If you don't have at least 35 AC augs or better in each slot, that's what you should be focusing on. Perhaps you could provide a Magelo link for us to have a look at your gear and Aug selection? Also, are you using a metal power source? Do you have the Stone of Judgement aug from Plane of War to help your Dodge skill? If you don't want to give us a magelo link of your character, you should at least go to the Magelo web site and spend some time looking at what Augs end game warriors are using. You can search RaidLoot for augs and filter them several different ways. If you don't have at least some of the augs from TDS, I would suggest going back and getting some of those and even some from TBM before trying to camp some of the Named mobs in EOK for current augs.

    my 2 cents... Good Luck.
  3. Powerranger Journeyman

I'll try to get a link up before the night is over... definitely don't have the dodge aug and definitely don't have what you'd call a full set of great augs. But they are not completely terrible... I have been able to down a couple EoK named (not easily mind you) but really just bridging the gap for PDH is where I feel so weak... I imagine you fully geared wars especially raid geared don't even notice a difference and some probably even tank with a 2hander...

Also for named tanking I'll usually start with fort to give me a sec to get things situated with the chanter debuffs etc... then I'll go with FS brace for impact, hold the line blade guardian I think CoH click and 3rd spire I think... then after that wears down I'll just basically start clicking everything.

Is there a dedicated like 3rd tier survival burn to go with.. or should I tweak some stuff?

Do you guys ever use that stun disc or the rune disc... they seem weak to me but idk.. I think my ac is around 10.5 unbuffed.. gets around 12k with buffs and stout.. the mobs just hit hard as heck? Maybe I'm just rusty cuz it's been a few years but I gotta be paying pretty good attention or I'll die

I could probably run 2 healer mercs instead of 2 casters full time (right now I only do that for named) and I'm sure I'd stay up a lot better.. but I'm trying to get things done man lol..slow kills annoy me.. but I guess they are better than no kills because I'm dirt napping.

There's nothing wrong with running 2 healer mercs while you're using your Bots to dps. You'll be more comfortable and able to react with your HP bar staying full rather than spiking. Also, there is some very good advice in this thread a little further down in this forum.

I started EoK with my 105 War in TBM group gear with full type 9 "Sturdy" augs for the AC, a full set of 30 AC heroic augs, and a mix of lvl 100 and lvl 105 Dex TBM hdex augs. He had no problem tanking one trash mob in that gear without using PDH, using similar tactics to what you describe. That gear set (except the heroic augs) can be bought with pp if Remnants of Tranquility are for sale in your bazaar. Buy a krono or two and sell it if you are short on pp.

Might want to drop down a level of difficulty or two and work on the augs.

And yes it's completely dumb that PDH is not sustainable. I don't have enough middle fingers to share with someone special for that.
  7. Rakknar Elder

I forget if this is still a thing...weapon stances enabled. I use to catch more than one tank without the telltale buff on.

I spent my night playing so I didn't get around to Magelo but I took a closer look at things... my augs are basically the bought augs from marks of valor and RoF era. There are a few good one like frozen orb of fabled king and mostly 40 - 50 ac.. however there are a couple ugly ones like imbued feather and the one from grounds..

Anyway I got another piece of cohort so that makes 3 plus a weapon from EoK so I will continue to get stronger. Basically I think for now I'll just have to run 2 healers. That seemed to make a huge difference. It's slower which bugs me a bit, but it's for sure less stressful.

Thanks for the advice, once I get some more upgrades I'm planning on going back for the progression from CoTF all the way up.. So much to do to play catchup.

Are there any other tips or advice you can give for just grind tanking? Maybe your favorite hot key or endurance management.. I seem to just live off of breather and when a named spawns I'll med up a bit.. always worries me tho... It's crazy how when you spawn a named how many trackers show up out of nowhere.. always worried they are gonna snag it while I'm resting up. Hasn't happened yet tho so that's good.

So it sounds like no one uses the stun disc or the rune disc? I feel like I get my kicked running them instead of stout.

Pain Doesn't Hurt covers 3 minutes out of 5. Dichotomic Shielding covers 1 minute out of 5. Guardian's Bravery (CoA BP click) covers 49s out of the remaining minute. Those all can stack, if you need a Super Tanking Mode for a brief time, but that's not really how EQ goes. Really you need to be steadily just a bit tougher, so using them in a chain gets you almost-full coverage on "a bit tougher"

From anniversary quests, the Diplomatic Papers is 30s out of 5min. If you're hard up to fill the gaps you can use that, or it lets you overlap things by a tick.

The Honed Wurmslayer from Frontier Mountains does a junior version of Pain Doesn't Hurt, too. So you can have it providing that same sort of mod in PDH's downtime, too.

I think the thing you lack the most is Heroic stats.
Your gear being COTF and a bit of TDS, you don't have high heroic stats.
TBM was a huge gear step over former expansion, with 20 ish type 5 aug with + 32 Hstat of your choice, and + 11 in other stats. EoK is going on the trend.
So get your TBM gear first, at least a set that allows you to fill all your type 5 aug slots, and it will get way better in term of survival.
Also, as always, tanks are dependant on their survival AA, so if you don't have a lot of survival AA you will take more damage.

Since no one has mentioned it, do you have Tribute activated?

You can get a +8% slot 3 Dodge aug in a couple of hours of running Everfrost LDoNs.

Haven't read thru all the responses but enc stun (and they are one of 3?? Classes they can stun yellow) will help you a lot. Dizzying storm. Obviously not going to work on those immune to stuns but you'll get more use than not. Forgo a dot and add that to your routine as needed.

That dodge aug is something I want for sure.. do you have to mess around with the whole level thing to get it these days? Seems like a good item for any character yes?

I think I will add a stun and rune nuke to the rotation on my chanter that sounds like a great idea
    Thanks for the ideas.

A few key things to keep in mind:
    1. Playing a warrior (or any tank) is a very technical, complex and detail-oriented class.
    2. The road to perfection is long and will require a lot of experimentation and research before you are really executing properly.
    3. A lot of stuff in EQ adds only marginal benefit, but there are so many that they add up and shouldn't be disgarded.
    4. The keys to tanking on a warrior involve proper usage of buff stacking, balancing between blowing all your cooldowns vs not using your cooldowns enough.
    5. Warriors are very gear dependent, when you're not geared you need to execute very well to survive against mobs that a well-geared warrior can faceroll in DPS mode.
    6. There is a lot of outdated information out there, and a lot of people playing at the top levels of EQ who don't know it's wrong. Everything you learn, verify yourself before you trust it.

For specifics your writeup isn't far off for basic tanking. One thing I saw that you missed was usage of Harmonious Expanse which makes aggro ez-mode, especially for a boxed character.

This link below is probably the best guide and is fairly comprehensive on tanking as a warrior:
    http://forums.eqfreelance.net/index.php?topic=2973.0

I found that to really learn buff stacking properly I had to spend a lot of time on lucy reading pages like:
    http://lucy.allakhazam.com/stacking.html?id=49010&source=Live

That describe what does and doesn't stack with a given spell. You don't want to blow Warlord's Bravery while your Anguish Breastplate ( http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=35156 is a must have item) is up. This is equally true for DPS.

These links are also ones I've found useful:

It's a lot of information to take in, and for me when I was starting out I didn't understand half of it. But everytime I played more and re-read it I understood more.

    Good luck.

Yes, it's a good item for any character. It fits in any slot 3 armor you have. You can 3 box the missions (I just get the Kill X amount of mobs missions)...I think it takes 3 characters (2 players + 1 merc) to request an LDoN. Might as well have a full group with you to get credit. I just run in and solo kill everything with a wiz merc on AE burn assisting me, and then get the next one. It shouldn't take more than a couple of hours to get enough currency to buy the aug. I don't have the Stone of Judgment from Plane of War so can't comment on how quick and easy that is to attain.

You can request the LDoNs at level 105. They only scale to level 65. So just burn through the Hard missions to get 100 or so currency at a time and you'll need to do about 9 missions to finish. It takes me maybe 5-10 minutes to run through the zone aggroing and killing everything to get the 50 or so kills completed.
  20. Tucoh Augur

And if you do an LDON mission, you may as well do an Everfrost one. I forget the details but you need some number of wins in a given zone before you can request a raid, and all tanks will eventually want the 35AC aug http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=50680 from the LDON raid: http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/quest.html?quest=4198

Note: in terms of time vs reward the 35AC aug is pretty low on your list. In terms of time to get it, it's probably close to 10-15 hours total. The dodge aug is much lower (Maybe 2 hours?) and worth pursuing.

I talked gear a little in your other thread, but in terms of gearing priority I'd say it's:
    1. T1/T2 EoK shield (T2 will be tough to get, but you can get it rotting)
    2. Wurmslayer (which you can probably get with your current group)
    3. Getting top level Form of Defense / Prismatic Ward clicky items http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=126533 http://items.eqresource.com/items.php?id=148419
    4. Visible EoK gear.
    5. Non-vis EoK gear
    6. Augs

Augs are important but they are often overemphasized (Partially because they are one of the key ways a raid-geared player can improve their character outside of raids). Going from a CotF shield to the T2 EoK group shield will increase your tanking more than getting every type 7/8 EoK aug.
