There would be no reason to have emulation if they only released server based software so you can host or rent a GSP like all the other games do. Since its such an old game and the way it seems to be structured the software would have to be setup just like P99 is.

If they wanted to make more revenue and increased players they could remake some of the server side to client software and release it. Once that is done, that will be the end of emulation software. You can just host it through a GSP or your own and private it or open it to the public.

This would put EQ up to the future like other games have been doing. Nothing lost, and lots to gain.

However there appears to be no direction for years, now they are in problems.

This is not a new idea, it has been said for years. I am just more to the point that EQ is way behind their thinking, and stubborn.

They can port the sql database for users and blank the character profiles, it might actually make daybreak games more revenue.

People enjoy EQ, and the more they take away or nerf drives the community away.

Wouldn't that mean they are competing with themselves? Personally, if I was daybreak, I'd send cease and desist orders to all the major emulation sites and shut them down, then force the players to either quit or join official servers.

P99 has done very well, 1000+ players at peak times daily, and its been locked in on the first expansions for almost 5 years now. Obviously they can't convert all those into paying subscribers, but if they shutdown all the Emulation sites out there there will be at least a couple hundred people that will convert to a new server on a classic rule set.

Lets say they do this and end up converting 200 people out of all the emulation players. 200x$15 per month is $3000... well that might have them break even after a couple months (attorneys fees) and then its pretty much gravy.

I'm honestly surprised that this hasn't happened, because almost every other MMO its standard operating procedure, but that all said, EQ just doesn't generate much revenue these days and probably not even worth the headache.

Trying to C&D things like P99 into oblivion wouldn't "convert" anyone, it'd just make them hate you.

"Standard operating procedure" in this case is idiotic, and I'm glad Daybreak decided to go against the tide in what as far as I know is the only case of a commercial MMO company publicly acknowledging an emulated server project in a positive light.

It was really smart, and I bet it made them more money from P99 players checking out the TLPs than it would have by continuing to have us pretend like preserving classic EQ wasn't a great thing.

They possibly don't own all the source code they use; libraries may have been licensed for their use, but not for distribution.

Also the legal risks, what if someone finds something patented/copyright/etc. in the code? even if it was independently created, there could be claims which are expensive to defend against.

your forgetting P99 was an emulated version from the start of its idea to now. I know i remembered when the guy announced it back then. I never played it because i had 12 accounts bought and paid for in EQ. But others mentioned it like the 1999 days. I had to check it out and see what it was about.

Competing against themselves? yes and no, it might actually bring new clients to the game. However its so old i doubt it will win anything over now. Its too late for it. But back then if only they designed it to handle Server software maybe it would have a chance to compete with the newer games.

Since for some reason i cant edit, probably logged in old account.
I did also mention it years ago to the devs to think about it. Maybe 2002, or 2004 i cant remember when but then we started to see emulated sites come up for everything, including later wow, lineage 2 etc.. When this game decides to close its doors EQ will still be popular. So what then? you will wish you had your server software.

Just like playing old records on old record players I would like to see Everquest have a chance to keep on playing; except now days with home computers you do not really need an old record player to play old records any more? Is Daybreak Game Company going to development and offer a long term solution to keep Everquest running indefinitely?

    Java software interface[edit]

    Main article: BD-J

At the 2005 JavaOne trade show, it was announced that Sun Microsystems' Java cross-platform software environment would be included in all Blu-ray Disc players as a mandatory part of the standard.[149] Java is used to implement interactive menus on Blu-ray Discs, as opposed to the method used on DVD-video discs. DVDs use pre-rendered MPEG segments and selectable subtitle pictures, which are considerably more primitive and rarely seamless. At the conference, Java creator James Gosling suggested that the inclusion of a Java virtual machine, as well as network connectivity in some BD devices, will allow updates to Blu-ray Discs via the Internet, adding content such as additional subtitle languages and promotional features not included on the disc at pressing time.[150] This Java Version is called BD-J and is built on a profile of the Globally Executable MHP (GEM) standard; GEM is the worldwide version of the Multimedia Home Platform standard.

    AND

Computer hardware virtualization is the virtualization of computers as complete hardware platforms, certain logical abstractions of their componentry, or only the functionality required to run various operating systems. Virtualization hides the physical characteristics of a computing platform from the users, presenting instead another abstract computing platform.[1][2] At its origins, the software that controlled virtualization was called a "control program", but the terms "hypervisor" or "virtual machine monitor" became preferred over time.[3]

Digital art and entertainment are different than digital hardware and we do not get new electrons everyday the electrons just move around. Because Everquest and Norrath are just digital entertainment what kind of work is being done right now to preserver the code on new hardware systems.

My best guess is that Daybreak Game Company could set core affinity to run an OS on two core and an emulation on two core and Everquest and Norrath on two core of a modern CPU and have plenty of instruction code left over with a 64 bit engine on any 8 core AMD CPU.

ok I think I get what you are asking and no, I doubt they will as with all other tech eventually it ceases to run on newer operating systems then a grass roots project comes along and rebuilds the code to run on newer devices.
I will assume you are talking about 20 yrs down the road when we are using quantum computing or something that doesn't run the code of x86 anymore.
I will say that as long as you have a old machine it will run eq and the guys have done a pretty killer job making it so you can run your own server pretty easily .
I wouold say grab all they have put it on a laptop and hold onto it lol.
