Where To Begin

    Hello all,

I have decided to take the Everquest plunge and today purchased a gold account. I am starting with a Paladin on the Xegony server. I have never played Everquest before and am looking for some coaching on how to get thru my first few weeks. I have read some of the posts on the forums here and I have to admit I am a bit overwhelmed. I have a disability that keeps me at home so I can pretty much play whenever I want.

Could I please get some simple step by step advice as to how and where to get started. I don't know anyone who plays Everquest so I am pretty much on my own. I would hope to meet some people along the way to play with but I assume my first few weeks it will be just me. No suggestions will be to basic.

Thanks in advance for the coaching.

i personally suggest starting a character on the vox server...it seems to have a far greater lvl range than the servers that have been out longer as its a newer server.following that to begin your eq learning adventure make yur char and go through the tutorial..you will end up with a full suit of armor and at least one or 2 weapons plus some plat to get started.

and for the times you cant find anyone to group with you are able to hire a merc to party with you in whatever role is needed

I agree with the Vox server being the best for a newcomer. Welcome to our addiction btw!!!! Be sure to do the Gloomingdeep tutorial and get the free armor from the quests. It is far better than what I had well into my 30's when I first started.

Also, see this link over on ZAM:

My most important advice, is to have fun!!

I'm fairly new as well, and can try and help you a bit on some things I've learned.

    1. Google where/how to download the latest maps. This will greatly enhance your know how of where things are.
    2. Once you are out of the starting cave, learn how to navigate to Plane of Knowledge (PoK). It will be your central point for a long time.
    3. Since you are a Paladin, look for undead zones. You will be better equipped to kill undead.
    4. Learn about the Mercenary system - hire a tank, healer, or dps to aid you.
    5. Find Defiant gear. Defiant gear drops off random mobs in the game, and will be far superior than other gear choices for your level until around level 70-80. Higher level players may give you free defiant gear, or sell it very cheaply.
    6. Be inviting. You can waste a whole day LFG and not find anyone. However, if you are proactive and type /who all (insert level, class, or name you are searching for here), you can find adventurers that fit the level/class you are looking for. Send them a tell see if their interested in joining.
    7. Try and make it a priority to do your epic quest, and other special quests in the game. This is mainly so that you don't spend your entire eq career grinding xp (like i find myself doing). There are so many awesome quests, zones, and items in this game you will never know about if you don't research a bit. Epic quest 1.0 is a good place to start, though.
    8. Once you are able to AA xp (level 52 I believe), try to grind some AA per level. You will never get faster AA xp per kill than at your lower levels. Get what you can each level or few levels and let the AAs progress with you.
    9. Be patient. Compared to other games, almost everything in EQ takes a considerable amount of time to accomplish.
    10. Have fun! As KC13 poster above mentions, this game is meant to be enjoyable by people who have completely different priorities and drivers. So, play the game your way!

The best advice I can give you, take things slowly and learn your classes ins and outs. EQ is a long, and complex game, there is more information about this game than your conscious mind can process. Try your abilities and spells one at a time, and learn very clearly what they do. Experiment with various things. When you're in a group, never be afraid of doing the "Never tried this before, hang on!" mentality. That's where fun happens. Don't be afraid to push yourself, and most importantly, don't be afraid of dying. I learn things every time I die; I still do, and I've played this game since release. Just take things a little bit at a time, and you'll get used to everything in short order!

Hero's Journey offers a very clear path for you to level up, and it gives you tons of equipment as rewards all the way through. Failing that, personally, I always level up in the oldest expansions I can for a given level. Means up to lvl 50, you're in classic, to 60, you're in kunark, 70 up to Omens of War, and so on and so forth. Don't be afraid to sit back and gather AA's. As a tank, you are heavily reliant on your defensive AA's, specifically Combat Agility and Stability. Max these at every opportunity you get. If this is your first time playing EQ, I strongly recommend the tutorial, it teaches you the basics very well I think.

http://crucible.samanna.net/viewforum.php?f=53 here's a link to your class forum, there is a wealth of knowledge on that site, and I recommend you take a look at it, search when you have questions, or post a thread asking questions.

I also recommend looking over http://everquest.allakhazam.com/, http://raidloot.com/ and http://eqresource.com/ These sites will answer all your gear and questing questions. Don't be intimidated by the level of information out there, this is an old game with an immeasurable amount of content. I would also look out for guilds that are recruiting in your level range, as they can be a very rewarding source of knowledge, groups, and experience (personal experience, not your experience bar =P) and will make your adventure through Norrath that much more rewarding.

Lastly, as you get more comfortable with things, and start seeing short comings of your UI, take a look at http://www.eqinterface.com/ at some of the interfaces they use there. There are many out there that provide more information than the default UI, others just refresh and modernize the default UI (EQ is a dated game!). However, that's getting ahead of yourself for where you are.

Take your time, make friends, and don't be afraid to start over just to try something different. Pick the race and class that you like the though of the best.

Play the tutorial to start with, then, as a completely new player, follow the Hero's Journey quests, but don't get too obsessive about completing every single quest in a zone. Take time to do the daily hot zone kill quests, as they reward both gear and reasonable experience (unlike most quests in Everquest until you get to the higher expansions).

Playing a tank like a paladin is very difficult because of how dependent they are on their gear and AAs. If you are not 100% set on the pally, I would re-roll a Magician or Necromancer as both are very good soloers and don't take alot to be very effective. You can have up to 8 characters on a gold account per server so feel free to create and delete as many alts as you like until you find out what class you like best.

Thanks for all the help so far.
I found I was dieing a lot so I got a tank mercenary in a place called ... Crescent (something). I figured he would be a little stronger than me since I have no gear yet. Is there any way to tell him to attack a target without me having to take some hits first? I also find him dieing a lot as well. I am currently level 2. Is my mercenary the same level as me? Should I just bag the mercenary since he doesn't seem to be much better than me?
  12. Hatestorm Lorekeeper

Your merc will always be your level. The benefit is he comes with a full set of gear and two swords. If you go to PoK or the guild lobby you can get higher level characters to buff you and your merc with Temperance which is a buff (a magical enhancement) that will give you 800 more hit points. Temperance is cast by a higher level Cleric. You could also ask a Shaman to buff your and your merc's strength to increase the amount your attacks would do.
As far as your tank attacking mobs before you taking hits you will have to use a bow or something to get on Agro. Agro is what happens when some monster is mad at you and is actively trying to hit you. You will be very happy later on that your merc doesn't go and attack mobs that aren't already agroing on you. At level 2 you have a spell called flash of light that will get you on agro and should allow you to get on agro from range.
  13. Droctrebor Journeyman

Blankslate, I also have a higher level Paladin on the Xegony server (since 2000) . Look me up and I will help you along all that I can, Droctrebor is the name. I love the Paladin class and pretty much play it exclusively. I am usually online the most after 10pm PST. I can show you some good spots and what not if you'd like.

    Regards,
    Droc

Stay in the tutorial zone until around level 10. You'll get gear that will last quite a while by doing the quests. You shouldn't be dying much at level 2 with a merc. Until you get used to playing, I would stick to white cons or below. You can tell the color by the target ring beneath the mob's feet. White means the mob is your level. Dark blue means they are 1-5 levels beneath you. Light blue is 6 to a certain range. You can also hit the C key when you have a target to con them or right click them from afar.
  15. Borek-VS Augur

    About that merc:

At your level, you should have a tank merc, and, as you have a Gold account, you want to have a Journeyman 1. That is the strongest available combination for you.

You have to pull for your merc; you will get hit a lot, and that's a good thing, as your defense skills will improve. At least until your are level 20, your merc won't be very good at keeping the mobs from hitting you, so you need to learn about "consider" colours - if you stay in the tutorial, the quests there teach you about all these things. For now, avoid any mobs that have a red con (and possibly avoid yellow, too).
  16. Blankslate Elder

I seem to get experience slower when using my merc. Should I go it alone and kill slower or use the merc?
  17. Crystilla Augur

Mercenaries take a portion of your experience (it's the balance for having someone help you, just like a player would in group). However, the key thing about those <lvl 50 mercenaries, you can pull multiple mobs on them and they don't need any healing as their regen is incredible.

It sounds to me like you might be fighting 1 at a time. Try pulling 2 onto him, 3 onto him until you find the balance for you for the best amount based on where you are fighting.
  18. Borek-VS Augur

    It depends.

Yes, mercs take a share of your exp; per kill, it is roughly 40% (it would be a straight 50%, but you get a bonus for being in a group). So if a merc helps you kill faster, they can more than make up for this penalty. It isn't always obvious when it will help - under level 50, as Crystilla says, it is a no-brainer; but I have logs at level 70 when a J1 tank gets the same exp over time as pure solo - with a high AA character.

As you seem to be around level 2 with a Gold account, I'd say to make sure that you have a J1 tank, then try killing a few spiders in Gloomingdeep. You should have no problem so long as you leave lurkers, the queen, and the spider tamer kobold alone for now. If you are 4 or higher, try killing kobolds around the pit, 2 or 3 at a time will be no problem, so long as you remember to back off and let the merc handle most of them.
  19. Blankslate Elder

    Hooray,
Just finished the Tutorial. I am L 12 and have some armor and 20 plat. It was a lot of fun there. I got squished a few times but not too bad. The merc tips helped greatly.

Now, off to make some money so I can buy my spells.

Any suggestions where a L 12 Paladin can kill for sellable items?
  20. KC13 Augur

Do the Hero's Journey. Crescent Reach to approx. 20 then Blightfire Moors.
