Should small gaming companies still manage their own servers.

Most small to medium sized gaming companies no longer manage their own downloads nor servers. They rely fully on 3rd party centralised computing networks. We see this with Steam, Epic, Geforce now, Xcloud. We even see this with movies where Netflix takes care of the distribution by working with content providers.

This allows the game developer to focus on content while relegating the network to a 3rd party.

I think daybreak should consider focusing on content and let someone else handle distribution and the network, because the way distribution is handled right now is a disaster and people are (rightfully) upset about it.

Yeah, but DPG is owned by a private equity firm.

I’m sure they’re having a staff meeting to discuss the consideration of this forum post as we speak.

How much do you think that equity firm would want for the rights of EQ?

Hard to say, they have a pretty lucrative business model. Rename some bags, launch old content and repeat.

Most likely an amount that is equal to or more than their projected profits.

EverQuest is distributed fine...you go to their website, download, boom. Easy.

The problems it currently has is nothing to do with distributing the game. A better example for what your going for would be games hosted on AWS. But most games still use P2P to host games or rent space at data centers. DPG still has to write code of the game to interact with whatever solution they use. Going to AWS doesn’t just magically fix everything and stop them from having to write the networking interactions.

7.5M will probably get the talks going.
    EQ 1 only.

Anyone who is still managing their own infrastructure in 2020 is either doing it wrong or is focused on a very niche use case which warrants this inefficient spending of effort / money.

I'd say just the opposite. Esp after the Intel hacks meaning there is likely no such thing as a cloud service that hasn't been hacked/compromised. If you don't own it you don't control it.

Have your entire company reliant on another, who may even be a competitor depending on your space.
    Or manage it yourself.

Reasons lots of companies manage it themselves.
