I'm curious to see how well a LITERAL, classic, EQ server would perform with today's standards.

I'm talking FULL Everquest 1999. Staring at the spell book, slow mana regen (at one point, you had to hold pulls until the healers had mana), coins had (and often punishing) weight, no maps, and especially- failed raids is an all night corpse recovery event. Somehow obliterate Discord, which is the most awful thing to ever happen to MMOs.

Your gear is on your corpse, and you could consent someone to loot your corpse. THAT long ago. Sergeant Slate was uber and cruel. Forget traveling through Kithicor Forest at night. Traveling from Gfay to Freeport was a game in itself. Kill a few mermaids on that rock in OOT? You seriously risk a painful corpse run- one that you will never forget or repeat.

Today's gamers are at a professional level. They're incredibly gifted at hand/eye and figuring out shortcuts. At least one MMO needs to be a sloppy, difficult game to conquer. EQ *was* that game, far before when it was needed. That time is now.

    So, P1999?

I would honestly love that and the reason is that i never got to experience true Everquest in its glory days only about a couple years now and then recently more hardcore playing and getting really into it. There is a server for that called Project 1999 and I have played it I have it installed on my computer as we speak but I can see your point with starting out fresh there is dude's on that server that make there alts and twink the out their characters and run around demolishing stuff. On that note it would be interesting to see how people would act on a brand new fresh Everquest classic server that would bring back to the old days, it would really be pushing the team effort and communication that sometimes this game lacks on certain servers I believe.

Not even close. P1999 is fun, but still has some of the "QoL" conveniences that today's EQ has. I want RAW AF EQ.

Don't get me wrong, P99 is super amazing, but I want growth after Velious. Agnarr was a failed experiment from creation for this very reason.

I want people to pull themselves up from rat whiskers to raid material. Plod hard and dirty. Get over on a game that doesn't want you to get over. Make achieving a difficult task.

Wait until P1999 spins up a new server? They usually follow the same release dates/timelines as the original release dates. I don't remember the last time they did release a new server, but it happens.

Kith was not full of undead at night when EQ launched, that happened later.
    NOT CLASSIC! :p

P99 is close but is still a pretty modern version of the "Classic" EQ, Sagarmatha refers to. It has its sourcedata from the Titanium edition, which is an updated engine from Depths of Darkhollow era (somewhere around that) with all the game-core changes, UI and fixes made up to that time-stamp. Dunno how much the dudes at P99 have made an effort to reverse engineer the game back to its classic state, but it does looks more like a job for an Archeologist or an Art Conservator, than a programing hobby.

True EQ old school would not work any longer. Too much information and the 'world' doesn't support most people truly knowing what to do.

But that's not the first serious problem.... Would people really play on a server where only maybe 10% get to raid? 10% may even be generous.

The second serious problem is without instances the game will be taken over my krono farmers because it would be easy as hell to lock down everything good. You'll have guilds then taking what they can just to get something.

For your idea to work it's going to require a heavy GM presence, new play nice rules and likely some kind of faster respawn with account wide lock outs.

Even after all that it'll be a show.

I would still be down for this idea and yea your right Sag they did do a couple, Quality Of Life improvements to the game. Yes that's exactly how it is over on Project 1999 there's always guilds getting banned for training or stalling the raid mobs while other guilds are contesting for them
  10. HoodenShuklak Augur

If knowing is half the battle then you're never going to relive old eq.

We used to print out small pieces of theory. Now? Well you have almost 2 decades of verified data.

Then we get to experience... we have already been through the motions... and weve seen how things are done.

This stuff cannot be fixed or altered with any code. You'll have to keep waiting for the next new game.

If I remember correctly, the original source code doesn't even exist anymore, right? Titanium is the closest they have to it. The poor archiving practices back in the day let the iterations get overwritten?

There are servers out there that aren’t crippled by the inaccuracies of the Titanium client if raw classic is what you’re after.

I took this probably a year ago on one of them, it’s still up and the classic UI is available.

How would it fair, eh probably not great. Especially if you have unfettered boxing and no pick zones. The game gets too congested too quickly in this scenario, especially the raid scene where mobs are spawning every 3-7 days usually. A handful of people could comprise a raid guild with unlimited boxing, look at Ragefire and Lockjaw guilds that have 10 dudes each 6 boxing in them for example. On servers that are classic and don’t have instancing, pick zones or later content that is mostly instanced, it can quickly become a cesspool.

P99 is a perfect example of this. They end up having to enforce a 0 boxing policy otherwise the server becomes far too congested (even though it already is). On top of this because it’s a top heavy server after 8 years of Classic-Velious only, they implemented all these weird raid rules and 1 or 2 volunteer GMs Hand out bans based on how they’re feeling and over the years they’ve had to get rid of quite a few GMs finding out they had been bribed, had personal relationships with specific players in specific guilds or RMT’d themselves.

To give you an idea of the congestion, every day about 10-20 people show up in East Wastes and /random 1000 and the highest roller can turn in their 7th Ring for the 8th Ring War. Same deal with Scout Charisa. I also hear they had a server reset last night at 3:30 AM Eastern and guilds batphoned it and started killing dragons at 3:35 AM Eastern.

An official Daybreak server would be able to avoid many of these issues but of course, they would likely assess there’s no money in this and it would be a non-starter.

This is like someone saying that the combustible engine made life stupid easy, and that it was better back before it was invented.

This is purely my opinion, but what ever...

Original EverQuest was not the awesome sauce that people (myself included at times) make it out to be. It was punishing to the point of being borderline abusive to its player base.

    1. having your gear on you after you die and respawn
    2. maps
    3. find
    4. not looking at your book to meditate
    5. click from bags
    6. target window (wish this was on TLP)
    7. /pick system!!!
    8. Bandolier
    9. shared bank slots
    10. coin not weighing you down to the point of not being able to move
    11. pets that do not vanish when you zone
    12. Avatar of Change (raid instances)
These are all good things that made the game better. They didn't make the game easier as much as they made the game playable with out inducing the feeling of wanting to punch your monitor at times.

People need to take the rose tinted goggles off, and realize that it wasn't better in 1999 than it is today on TLP servers.

The Phinigel server today is what EverQuest of 1999 should have been.

Now if we could just convince the developers/designers to base new EverQuest expansions around the /pick system rather than mission instance runs, we would have a reason to play on a Live server in the newest expansion.

The /pick system makes private instance runs completely unnecessary (except for raiding) for content.

Don't forget that quest npcs would eat your turn ins if they weren't exact....or god, remember chasing down Hasten with 3500 gold on you? Or imagine what it would be like now with the VP key and old, old school mechanics, where you could still it?

And /consent gave another person consent to loot your corpse.

I don't think it would fair all that well to be honest simply because as good as the game was, it had and still has lots of glaring flaws that I think need to be improved upon. I think what people want is EQ improved or EQ Classic 2.0, I know that is what I want.

Also when I think Pantheon and compare it to EQ classic and EQ as it is on the Corinav server, I am realizing just how limiting EQ classic really was. Many of the the limited convenience features on Corinav make the game 100x more enjoyable without changing the overall experience.

Origin - The ability to gate back to your home city is huge. I can actually pick up loot instead of letting it rot because I can Origin back to at place to sell this loot. If I am deep in a dungeon and the healer bails, I and the group can just origin out rather than try to fight our way out of the dungeon without a healer. Hell if I can only play for a few hours and the group wants to do a marathon run, no problem, the group doesn't have to escort me out, rather I can just leave when my replacement show up.

Gear being retained after death - Another huge difference. No 5-hour ordeals trying to get to your corpse so you don't lose your gear permanently. Freedom to try out new areas and explore because while dying still sucks, you can make up 2-3 hour of lost progression, where you can't make up losing gear it took your 30-50 levels to acquire.

Shared Bank - No more trying to find a hiding spot to drop a bag of loot just because you want to transfer it to an alt.

My point is these sort of improvements are what is making EQ enjoyable for me to play again after being gone for 18 years and things like these relatively minor but important quality of life changes need to be in any game for it to be enjoyable.

You can't get a true classic server because nobody is going to go back to dial-up willingly.
