Alchemy potion restrictions changes

So, the patch note about this is vague, mostly because we don't want a long, drawn-out explanation in the patch notes. Therefore, there is this post.

Alchemy distillates have a required level.
For each alchemy distillate, we found the player spell it most resembled.
We compared the potion to the spell.
If the potion is less powerful than the player spell at the required level, then we marked it to be allowed.
If the potion is more powerful, we delayed it's entry to the game until the player spells became more powerful, up to Prophesy of Ro. If the potion was always more powerful, we marked it for Prophesy of Ro unlock. The specific example of this is the damage shield potions.

One exception we made was to change the power of some mid-level shaman and druid regeneration spells. (that is noted in spells)

Then, We also marked the potions to be restricted if it's required level is above player levels (no making level 106 potions from the start to get skill... not that the components are available for the 106 potions... but the general idea is there and this covers the gaps where components for higher level potions may be available)

Then we took the more restrictive of those choices and restricted the alchemy combines to that era. The exception to this is where there were already long-term restrictions on potions. This is mostly the XI to XIII potions. I may address that again in the future, but for now, I stuck with restrictions that were already years old.

I know some people will probably be disappointed that this will effect the first few eras of TLPs, but the effort you put into researching and establishing a rational standard for this pots makes this really easy for me to get behind personally.

This is probably one of the best things I've seen done on the TLPs. You guys really do care about the game, thank you.

That something I can look into as well, but I did not have the time to address component availability. I have no ETA on that either though! It's a busy time for me right now... I'm likely to look at cultural first, then get back to this.

The HoT Potions have no place on TLP servers until PoR. They let every class cheaply and easily cover their own healing in many raid situations with light to moderate AEs where you'd typically need a priest to cover that group.

Even the people who were outraged by the potion removal from the last patch agreed these HoT potions were far too powerful to be on the servers period to PoR.

Sounds like a great compromise!

The spells benefit from focus effects and aa's the potions do not... you are still better off having clerics MGB these spells during raids.

That's what I was thinking, but I wasn't sure. I was under the impression that the vast majority of the distillate potions couldn't be made because their components do not drop nor are sold by vendors until we get to the Planes of Power.

If the potions are being changed to being permitted to be made at certain expansions (such as Ruins of Kunark), then it would be great if the components to make them were added to alchemy supply vendors available in that era.

I greatly appreciate all the work you have put in to this one Ngreth. Tradeskills mean a lot to many of us.

A possibility to handling these components for the appropriate era might be to add an merchant to Innothule swamp that only starts spawning once Ruins of Kunark is opened on a server. It's pretty much the defacto place to go for purchasing alchemy supplies among Shamans in pre-Planes of Power eras. Just a thought.

Yes the spell can focus, but they also cost time to cast and cost a decent amount of mana. The potions are 30s duration 2min reuse and instant. MGB CR stacks with these potions, so you can do both.

Though yes, a Supernal Elixir cast by an AA'd geared Cleric will last longer and heal for a bit more, that's still a 600 mana Spell a cleric is casting. It's just way too powerful for these servers where people are already comically overpowered against the content.

It would be like having a potion that's a clicky Strike of Solusek (640 mana spell) or Shock of Magic. I know my Cleric and Druid would love having an instant 3k Nuke clicky every 2 minutes. Because that's basically what these potions offer. Every class a damn near equivalent ability to the best priest HoT in game at that time. Or I suppose a DoT is a more apt comparison, so maybe a potion that clicks Blood of Thule or Swarming Death or Pox of Bertoxxulous instantly every 2 minutes that costs about 10-20pp to make.

On this topic, the only spells that got modified were spells Shamans could use. Druids and Shamans share a fair number of Regeneration spells, but not all of them. The following 1-80 Druid Regeneration spells saw no change:

Pack Chloroplast
Regrowth of the Grove
Oaken Vigor
Blessing of Oak

This leads to a situation in the case of the first three where the single versions do 40-50% more Regen than the group versions. Which I imagine is a simple oversight and can be corrected before this patch is pushed Live.
