The problem is context.

Many black people can determine the ****** word. Lets not mince around here, this is exactly what we are talking about.
That word doesn't mean the same nowadays as it used to. Nowadays its used in not only insults, but terms of endearment amongst the black community. Or indeed many white people, or to go further, black people referring to a white person.

That would be context.

And that, like the world, is constantly changing.

Nowadays there is not as much racism, words today are used in very different ways that mean different terms. And here is the problem. When you call some someone a ****** or a Puff, they are words used every day by black people and gay people. How we use these terms today mean something different to what they once did. The problem we have is our understanding, we are not living in the past, we are living in the present, and are more understanding today, and more tolerant of each other than we have ever been.

i'm 56 and retired Been through 2 wars and came back with a hatred of certain people. Racial slurs were common in my squad. We were family. We said it with love. My point was that words are given power because people give them power. Along with people wanting to be classified a certain way. I had a soldier that was African American and another that was black. The 1st under me was a ***** and she called herself that to the enlisted. She never cared if she heard herself called ***** by anyone. She was doing her job in her eyes. Words are meaningless action speak greater.

You don't have to be tougher then everyone just be tougher then the guy kicking your @$$ and you'll be ok. If they day comes and some words beat you down harder then a man with a baseball bat don't cry cause your feelings got hurt cry because your a coward because words don't have power they only have the power you give them .

Words only have power if you let it. And you can't stop people from speaking words. So it's best not to let it get to you.

You ought to try working in jail. Hear that word all day long and not from white people. I always found it strange that blacks use that word as a term of endearment. As an American of Italian descent I've never heard us going around calling each other similarly profane terms. And it's funny, you have a segment of society that is both greatly offended by the term and use it with extreme impunity. Doesn't make sense and there's no type of explanation that is going to make it make sense either.

Here's what I've always find so hard to understand. To everyone who makes an argument against stopping the use of offensive words or who try to minimize the use of it (just ignore it), or how come it's okay for him or her to say it but not me - the real question is why is it so hard to stop using them?

I mean there are millions of words to be used, is there some hard wiring that means certain people can only use those offensive words. Is there some kind of brain structure that makes it impossible to use different non-offensive words without an enormous life-threatening strain.

Or, is it just that people are so incredibly insecure that if they decide not to use offensive words, not to sound just like their peers, that they fear being rejected?

It's so easy to use other words. Many of them are actually only one syllable long with minimal use of letters (e.g. Bro, Dude, Man, Bud, etc.). Best part is, it's easier than expending the energy to argue for using them.

It's not like we're asking you to move a 500 pound block up a hill, just use a different word.

Whilst the theory of language, it's evolution and the psychology of offence are no doubt enormously fascinating the simple fact is that within the confines of the game we all agree to certain standards of behaviour and those include the words we say.

Whether it personally offends you or not the fact is that certain words and actions have been deemed inappropriate here and that means you shouldn't use those words or exhibit those actions here. I appreciate when it comes to voice chat it's not so easy and I also know that most people don't feel like they can stand up and say "Hey, this is not the place for that kind of language." If it happens in text you can always /report the player and follow it up with a ticket and CS will handle it.

If everyone actually bothered to report the people that think it's okay, and stood up and told them so as well then I doubt it would take all that long before they either got the idea or left. However, as long as we all tolerate it - even if just by ignoring it - we allow it to continue and are somewhat complicit in its existence in our game.

You're upset because black people use that word to each other in a friendly way? They grow up hearing that word and it eventually becomes a part of their vocabulary. I know it has negative connotations because of the history behind it, but when you hear young black people using today, it's just like a white guy saying something as normal as "bro" or "man". And keep in mind, I mean the word ending with -a. When it's used with -er at the end, you can tell by how it sounds that it's usually meant to intentionally offend someone.

The only reason I can accept is if someone is a racist - I don't agree with that, but at least it's logical. I can't see why someone would say, I'm not a racist but I'm going to talk like one even though it is super simple not to and would have little or no effect on my life if I didn't (but perhaps a positive one).

Saying other people do it, and why should I stop if others get a free pass is avoiding the fact that there is no compelling reason to have to use those terms. Heaven forbid someone should improve him or herself despite what everyone else does without even breaking a sweat.

but who are you to tell people what words they can use? if you are not a parent or a boss or other figure of authority you cannot dictate what words other people must use. that is their own choice and freedom. if you get offended easily then dont associate yourself with people who use words that will offend you. you can't expect that everyone must change to fit your needs.

it's not hard at all to use another word but why must we limit ourselves to the words we can say out of the fear of offending others? theoretically anything you say can be found offensive by someone so if you're using that as a criteria as what you can or can't speak, then you best not say anything...though not saying something can also offend people too.

To restate my posts succinctly, I'm not saying thou shalt not..., I'm asking why ? Why does anyone have to? I still haven't seen an answer to that.

Hey, if that's where someone wants to take a stand regarding free speech, seems lazy and insensitive to me, but probably not to others. Me, I'd rather choose an issue that has more meaning and could actually affect someone's life significantly, I don't know... Is is okay for company to fire a person for what is said in his or her personal posts? That's something worth debating. Not, I am compelled to use racist terms for an unknown reason.

because they want to. there is no deeper meaning. it's not too hard. it's best for you to just let it go and not let words offend you. words are just words. you should focus more on the intentions behind them. if their intentions behind the words mean no harm then you should not be bothered.

I didn't quote the links as that would make for a long quote but I agree with you. Blacks can say things to blacks that is inappropriate for whites to say to blacks while whites can say things to whites that are inappropriate for blacks to say to whites. The thing I cannot agree on is where it seemed you were attempting to compare domestic violence to MMA. Floyd Mayweather and Ronda Rousy would never fight but they are both professional fighters, it's what they do for a living. Boxing has been around for a very long time, martial arts even longer but martial arts hasn't been a mainstream sport nearly as long.
