And not everyone conforms to their humor. Did you forget about that? If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. There's plenty of things to joke about other than offensive things. Joke about cats and dogs if you have to. I'd rather hear jokes about that than how my pain brings comfort and joy to others, ahahaha.

Yeah, and mom jokes could easily offend someone with a dead mom. But mom jokes are essentially harmless. They are spoken with the intended meaning of "I don't really think this about your mother, but it's funny as hell". And what about a joke concerning cats when someone's cast just died? Should I ask everyone if their cast died recently before telling the joke? That's not a problem with the joke at that point. It's a problem with the person. The person has been affected that numbs them to the humor.

And you misunderstand the part about a bad joke. It's the difference between taking a racist home and having a chuckle as opposed to telling the joke AT someone withtheintention of offending or hurting. Tone of voice, familiarity, etc all make a difference in whether or not a joke is to be hurtful. Do you KNOW your friend's dad died in 9/11? Ok then; why on Earth would you tell him a 9/11 joke? On the flip side, if you two are enjoying edgy jokes and youdidn't know his dad ddied, and you tell the joke? Is that your fault now?

I respect that you don't like period jokes, but I really don't think you can compare it to racist jokes o_O

Except, you know, majority ruled that those were racist? So we don't?

You would think it's OK to tell a mom joke to someone who's mom died?? In a group where you know the dynamic, joke away. Know the audience. But in a PUG group you don't know. Civility is in order then.

Not if you are in a group who think so.

    Empathy.....civility......know your audience.......know the dynamic.

So in conclusion: Be polite around strangers & joke with your friends if that's okay.

I think we all kinda learned that when we were 4.

Ok, so hypothetical where everyone in a group but two people are enjoying menstrual jokes. You don't enjoy them. Do you tell them to shut up or leave group, when you're the odd man out? Do you try to derail their conversation so you can have your cake and eat it, too? Or do you just leave group?

Cause this thread is about that situation. More people in that group were telling period jokes, and enjoyed it. Not even the person who sparked the jokes made any attempt to stop them, because 9 times out of 10, that female toon is a guy. The only person who had a problem with it was the white knight trying to defend what he assumed was a girl.

Oh, I'm all for a good joke (in the right situation) but, you find something offensive that others might not. I'm not saying I don't also find it offensive, just you can't claim special rights about race and leave out the point that this thread was started about. Maybe you are a part of the group that would be affected by race jokes, just like a woman would be affected by jokes about menstruation.

EDIT: I don't mean you specifically, just a general you.

In situations like this, depending on how bad you feel it is, please consider:
    • Asking the players to stop
    • Ignoring the players
    • Opening a CS ticket reporting abuse (http://help.soe.com)
    • Leaving the group
Beyond that, there's not a lot we can do. People are people, some of them are awful, and some of them play games.

You can have a full on 8 man PUG group. And if only ONE were offended then yeah!!! Stop it!! You want to joke around on stuff that are taboo for some? Fine! Knock yourself out. But don't expect that everybody in the PUG group should just "take it on the chin".

I've been through several. Many jokes were made. I made them myself. Some were funny, some weren't. I never felt the need to make a big public gesture about it to posit myself as some sort of white-knighting moral crusader. Life is messy. People who do good deeds with a pure intention don't boast about it later, seeking a feather for the cap.

Lines that you've arbitrarily drawn for me. Thanks, but I won't live on your plantation. Since this is a private enterprise, we play by the TOS, but the pearl-clutching "social shaming" and "community standards" are really over the top. People can stand up for themselves and should give back as good as they get. People might get some thick skins and learn how to deal with other people in an open and honest manner instead of hiding behind some sort of haphazard language-scape fraught with PC landmines behind every corner. I think some of you might need this:

So, in short, grow some thick skin, keep your head down, and get on with the game and life.

Who let it go on for 10 minutes before I said something. This wasn't a simple knee jerk reaction to 1 poorly timed joke, it was a reaction to 10 minutes of tactless behavior.

The problem is people just aren't respectful of other people any more, are just self centered and do not think of others. It's sad but true. This is a game but if it is clear you are bothering some one there is no need to continue whatsoever aside for their own personal amusement. I have left countless pug in past just because there were people saying non stop racist things or bothering other people. None ever bothered me personally but it clearly up set another person/people in the instances and they just wouldn't shut up so I left. It takes all the fun away from playing the game and I never want to be apart of it or run with those people. It's one thing to joke around like that with friends and league mates but if it bothers a stranger then be courteous and shut up.

Man, I can't believe y'all are STILL discussing this. I think some people need to put on their big(non-gender specific pronoun goes here)pants and get over themselves. Wow, you took offense on behalf of someone(which isn't actually possible btw, there have been several very good papers written about that subject), and stood up for their...what exactly? How hard is it to ignore someone in game, or leave a group, or initiate a kick?
Fun fact: You have very little control over other peoples actions. If you think people can be offensive in game, step out into the real world and apply your "justice" hands on, lemme know how that works out for you. I eagerly await all the tales that "totally happened".o_O

Its a form of harassment that these guys don't comprehend. There is a lot of it online. If you guys don't see it just create an alt that is female and see it for yourselves.
