I am very new to the game and genre of this type of game. I just picked up the game 3 months ago and still learning the game. Someone had asked me what was my DPS as a tank and I gave them the number on the weapon as my DPS. I honestly think I don't know what DPS actually means. Can someone break it down and tell me what it is so I can understand.
damage specifically DamagePerSecond. damage done in a short period of time caused by a combination of moves/buffs with a long cooldown is referred to as burst damage.
With regard to your weapon the dps is the average damage per second of your weapon attacks. So if you are wearing a weapon with 77.9 dps, that means you're doing about 78 damage per second for each second you attack with your weapon (not counting critical attacks). Dps in this game can also refer to the damage dealing role of a group member. You are in "dps stance" when the icon by your name is that little flame-looking-thing. While in that stance, you take advantage of the damage modifiers of your powers, the things that say stuff like "increases all damage by 45% for 5 seconds or until the hit counter resets."
another thing to add. The stat Precision raises the damage your weapon does and the Might stat raises the damage your powers do.
Not sure why he would ask that...I can understand why you are confused since his question seems very odd, to ask a Tank what his DPS is as a Tank.... Though you have good explanations by others on the thread explaining what DPS means!
rereading what you said, you might actually be in DPS stance but not realize it. Look for the flame like Sumeric explained that would be to the left of your name in the upper left hand corner of the screen. If its a shield then you are in tank stance. If it is the flame then you are in DPS form and get no tanking benefits from your powers.
Very true. I just didn't want to be dumb and upset about it if it ever comes up again and my Might (996) and Precision (148) at the moment I am guessing is very very poor.

Well, if you're the Tank it really isn't your job to do the damage so... Don't let anyone complain to ya about it xd
You were correct in giving him your weapon's DPS and any might/precision information. DPS is a role anyone in game can do. you just have to make sure to lunge ahead and stay infront of the group. make sure your power bar is empty at all times. dont pick up any body that goes down because then you arent doing damage to anything. So what if the group wipes, it makes your numbers look even better. Your empty power bar gets refilled by Controllers with 1350 vit or higher. unfortunately some of the power they give back to you also goes to the tank and the healer and not all to you. Tanks role is to gather everything up for the dps so you do more damage. they should make sure everything hits them and they give you control immunity so you cant get knocked down which makes you lose damage. Healers make sure every body stays alive so they can all do their job of supporting you. oh, and some healers can you give powers to make you do more damage. Oh, and as DPS you have a less likely chance of getting gear you need because everyone can roll on it. Hope that summed it up for all the roles for you. ( of course this isnt how I really feel. it's all just for fun )
