Username Resets

1. They have internet and PS4's downrange and abroad; I speak from experience. Not a good argument to keep thousands of inactive character names from new or existing users who would use them.

2. This is another pretty extreme example - how many people do you think this will actually happen to? A dozen? Less? Another poor, extreme example.

3. Better, but no one is talking about wiping names after 'several months'. This game has been around since 2011 - a name purge for accounts that have been inactive for 2 years or longer seems reasonable IMO.

I don't agree. But since the devs have said that this is never going to happen, it's really not worth it for me arguing about it any further. Enjoy putting x's and numbers as letters in your names.

i was gone for a year. if i had come back and seen my names gone, i would not have resubbed.

Well I'm currently breaking #1 sooo damn lol. But I don't think anyone will want my toons names as the characters in them that don't pertain to the actual name, lx x xl.

Edit: but if I was not on for an extended period of time I and my names were wiped I wouldn't be playing this game again.

Anyone that says this won't be fair has a point but honestly you haven't touch the game in 5 months? I don't think anyone will disappear from the face of the earth for 5 months then come back crying about their username being reset. I'm sure some of you may have had good points but I didn't read all the replies so if you would like to point something out, quote it so I'll see. Guess I didn't click the follow thread option.

But anyways, basically I still don't see the problem here. There would see a little message to any PSN players who have accounts on DCUO along with the twitter notice and on the website(launcher too). If you haven't touch the game for 5 (FIVE!!) months and you knew about this change, I don't think anyone will be upset. It's not like overnight they will be like ok let's reset names of all inactive players. I don't see any circumstance where you wouldn't be able to log on for a few seconds to simply verify your account. A game out this long and I'm sure there are tons of good names. To whoever comment about me wanting superman as a name, No. Fact is I hate sometimes when people have long names, spaces in their names, or use N4m3s L1k3 Th1s. I personally hate inviting or sending a tell to people with these names so yeah... Just my opinion though

An idea was presented, and I said why I objected to it. I gave 3 very specific examples, and rather than arguing the generalities of my argument, the specifics were dismissed as being too remote to happen. I still think this is a bad idea, and nothing presented has convinced me otherwise.

I dont think people realize how often stuff happens in life to prevent a person from getting online.

I can list reason-upon-reason-upon-reason-upon-reason even sandwhiching a few to make multiple reasons for not getting online and i even know many many many people who told me why they had to quit DCUO for awhile when i was still very active in the pug life. The number of people was staggering and LITERALLY every day i met a person who was just coming back for reasons known to them, told to me. If I am asked to list a few of them I will but if i list them myself without being asked I feel like listing them all and there is just too many for people to care to read.

This name wipe idea I do not support for those people who face life's inevitable complications.

Not everyone would be ok with this name wipe. I know its hard to please everyone but I believe this would cause problems for enough people that I feel it would not be wise.

I suggest titles that we earn in the game that we can add to our characters as mark for completeing certain tasks. Its not a full name change but its something. At least being able to have 2 spaces in our names besides 1. If the reason why we can only have 1 space is that people dont use profanity or other offensive words by sneaking it in with spaces.... Well ive seen numerous names with such things WITHOUT spaces.

Maybe you didn't read the replies. If you cannot get online within 5 months, maybe you shouldn't be worried about a video as you have other things to worry about.

Obviously, the OP wasn't around way back when all the servers were merged. A lot of people -- regular players who'd been away from the game for a short time -- were forced into name changes because other people who'd played a little more consistently were awarded the names. To be sure (and although I wasn't affected on ANY of my 8 toons I had at the time), this was a total pain to go through both as players and as the development and support organizations for this game. I'm sure it is a pain the will not want to go through again as part of the issue with either resetting names or purging them means that SOE would have to use their legal counsel to review their own Terms of Service to ensure they are not in violation of them and, if they are, what the short and long-term liabilities would be.

The bottom line is that doing this will cost SOE more money than it will make them in the long run. Maybe someday they'll find some other way to make it happen but that day is a long, long way off and, again, I don't see where SOE makes any additional money by doing it.

How would you know whether I was there back then? I have been playing DCUO since a little while after it came when my friend told me about it. Then Ive been on and off for this game because I was playing CoH until it closed down. But anyways it was a suggestion and food for thought. Do you really think I was expecting this to happen. I know the way this community works and I have payed attention to the way of devs. Sad when every change you make to agame is how will this profit. Yes it is a business but updates just for the hell of making a better game is a sign of a well established company. Back on point though, it was an idea and I wanted to hear people's thought lol I understand how much of a pain it was but one day it will be needed if DCUO isn't dead by then.

I think this is a terrible idea, because it causes a lot of issues in my book. I have friends that play this game and are unable to play for 6 months at a time due to military service. Not only that, but they offer a free month of Legendary to anybody that let their Legendary lapse that year.

Truthfully, if there is aname you wanted, you should have created that name on day 1 of the game. People had names since Beta, that is a perk to playing the game from the start. People really need to be creative and original, I would hate to see someone take the name of a friend that hasn't been on in a while and when I send him/her something find out it is an imposter.

I have recently renamed or created new toons and coming up with a good or funny name wasn't that hard. You just need to be a little creative about it and not put limitations on yourself. If you insist on having a certain/ specific name then you'll definitely end up disappointed. And I don't believe that purging inactive names will help at all. Just my opinion.

If someone left after month 1 of release, I don't think they are coming back at this point.

How good of an argument does it have to be to justify something as inconsequential as making it easier for people who lack imagination to make up names for a superhero video game? The potential for bad consequences far outweighs the negligible benefits.

I've got 5 characters, all with cool names that match the theme of the character, with no X's or numbers or symbols. If someone else doesn't, they have no excuse beyond laziness and lack of imagination.

My grandparents, my mother, my sister, my brother, 2 of my best friends... it's real easy to dismiss something like cancer (or injury, or other illness that might knock you down for a long time) as something that happens to someone else until it isn't anymore.

What is the potential for 'bad consequences'? No one is talking about taking away names from players who have been active within the last year or so; we're talking a purge of names from those who haven't logged any time in for a year plus (the devs can access this information). So, you're thinking it's better to keep a name for a player who may or may not return to the game, as opposed to freeing one up for someone new who could stay and spend money? I get that some creativity goes a long way, but at this point people are looking up names for Ice in Aleut because there is literally nothing decent available. Further, while it's idealistic to want to please everyone all of the time, some sacrifices have to be made that benefit the many at the expense of the few.

People opposed to a name purge never accept the fact that there are probably thousands of unused accounts, sitting there, never to be used again; and would rather hypothesize that the reason for their lack of use is military mobilization and/or terminal illness (or some other life altering, year-long event) as opposed to the fact that for 90% or more of those accounts, people just quit and aren't coming back.

No one thinks cancer is a joke, but continually listing life-altering, terminal diseases as a basis for not conducting a 'best practices' effort many other MMO's employ is desperate.

OK. You win. I'll delete all the old names right now.

1) Freeing up these names would just be a drop in the bucket. If you think that releasing the names is going to get you the exact name you want then only a very small percentage of you are right.

2) Are you going to quit the game because you can't get the exact name that you want? If you're here complaining about names being taken then chances are you're not going quit over this.

3) New players down the line aren't going to be getting those names anyways because they will have been taken. So let's scrap this whole "this helps gain new customers" nonsense.

4) Would people stay "retired" due to their name being changed while they were gone? Some probably would. And it wouldn't surprise me if returning players tend to spend more money due to wanting to catch up.


The point is that SOE has almost nothing to gain from doing this. Sure, a very small portion of the existing players would be happier. But it's not like those people were going to quit anyways. We all know SOE's primary focus with this game is making money. If this made financial sense for SOE to do, they'd have done it a long long time ago.

Ok so the ones who were there from the start should hold names they they will never use again? There are people out there that register new and could have some really cool names. As for your friends in the military do they not have access to a console or pc for 6 months? I believe when you are deployed you can still do these things but I might be wrong.

I here the same excuses from everyone. Anyone else posting please read previous replies before you state the same things.

1. Its not about getting the exact name I want. Its about freeing up names so people can have better names and not B00m3R4ng01992 like no... Not everyone is creative enough to come up with names. I find myself very creative but even I sometimes have difficulty created an Alt because I can't grab a name that:

• Is relevant to my power and/or player theme.
• Has no space,special characters, or numbers
• Doesn't sound corny or lame

2. Nobody will quit the game. its about making the experience better.
3. Yes it will. I'm sure all the current players wouldn't take up all the new names in one day.
4. Ok so you kind of confused my here. You say people wouldn't care about their names basically and then you say returning players would? Make up your mind.
SOE may not have much to gain from this but it will improve user experience for those who are active. You guys keep doing this what if crap. Its about now in the moment. If someone refuses to log onto a game for 6 months, his name should become available. They won't be doing this every six months. Only a one time wipe. Not everything is about making money directly. Some things you should do to provide the active players a perk just because. Who knows, maybe this will encourage players to buy more character slots? lol not likely but I mean you guys keep doing these what ifs so I thought I would through it out there. Another what if would be that people would be encouraged to log into the game to save their characters so they decide to play anyways haha I don't know. But here's a question.
Would you honestly cater to a friend that comes and goes or a friend that sticks with you through it all. I would say the second one and they consider that too.
