So, as some of you may have read, I was scheduled with a local coffee shop to do a display of my cartoons/drawings in the month of November. I had received an e-mail back in June/July from the girl who coordinates this for the shop stating that she just needed to clear the display with the owner. I thought "Ok, not a big deal, probably just a procedural thing" and wrote back indicating my acknowledgment/understanding of this. So, fast forward to the middle/end of September, I haven't heard anything from anyone at the shop and e-mailed asking if things were all set for me in Novemer......no response, I e-mailed again around 10/20 asking the same things, again......no response. I then decide to visit the shop and inquire directly and left a written message for the girl. I got an e-mail Sunday indicating that she "I had a mix up with the schedule and my former October was moved to November. I still have to clear your show with my boss. Will keep in touch" Now, I am not trying to get too upset about this. I am also not so self absorbed that I am like "How dare they!!!!" While I didn't put alot of work into this, I did put time into this under the idea that I would be displaying stuff this coming month. It bother's me about the timing of it all when I reached out multiple times to inquire about if things were good to go. It's a bummer because I was really looking forward and getting excited about the idea of displaying the work there. In an effort to make lemonade out of lemons I am reaching out to a few other locations with the hopes of being able to display my work and future works. I will keep you all posted.
I totally get it. You were really excited about it and they bailed. At minimum, they should have contacted you any time over those months to say "we changed our minds". How hard would that have been? Being a creative indie is difficult enough and a little courtesy goes a long way. I hope another place quickly takes interest and allows you to display your work.
Thanks for that man. I don't believe it is a "they aren't interested" thing. I think it is more that the person "coordinating" the whole ting for those who look to display is super unorganized. The shop seems to be run by a lot of "herbalists". While I thoroughly enjoy drawing, creating and wrting about characters and improving as much as I can, I am lucky to not have to rely on my art to pay my bills and it is and I plan to keep it a hobby for quite some time. If I am able to put something together and self publish something that people around the way take an interest in, I will call that an accomplishment. Until then, the goal for me is to just get comfortable displaying, talking about and refining/developing my style and work. I do have an email out to another local place and am waiting to hear back.
Sorry to hear that Bern. No one like the run-around. It sounds like they're not super organized but it could turn out that December might be a possibility. It's a good idea though to pursue other locations for your artwork like you've been doing. Putting all your eggs on the December "herbalist" basket might prove bitterly disappointing. Just keep going. You'll find something and when you do, take some pics. We want to see.
Much appreciated friend, and glad to see you are still out there. I am looking for other places and am waiting to hear back from the shop I contacted the other day. I am also looking at other shops and locations in the area. If anyone can think of other types of places other than coffee shops where I can look to display, that would be helpful. As things develop, I will let you all know and I really appreciate the kind words and encouragement all.
Hey Bern. So I've read what happened and don't take it the wrong way, I know it sucks, but the way you describe the locale and the 'herbalist' owners, it was to be expected that they were unorganized and most likely to them, the display isn't important. However, as a potential indie comic artist as yourself, it was good that you insist and you definitely got to try other places. I mean, for example, try the large comic book and collectibles stores in NYC like Midtown Comics or Forbidden Planet, they often hold in store events or even better, can point you in the right direction to displaying your work. Also, another potential place to get contacts for comic displays is an event that is coming up on Nov 11. It's CAB, aka Comic Arts Brooklyn. Hopefully this helps and
Much appreciate Ms. Benz and no offense taken at all. I am not surprised by the outcome of this given the people that seem to be overseeing the establishment. I am in the process of looking for outlets to display/show and will add your suggestions to the list of places to look into. I appreciate the support and and suggestions. I will keep you all posted as things develop. Truly, thank you to all of you for the kind words, supports, views, comments and likes. Very much appreciated.
That does sound super-suckage, hope you find a venue that will display your work and treat you with respect Even if they were 'super-unorganized', she could have still replied to any one of your emails letting you know what was going on, was almost expecting, when you went in personally to make enquires, to have been told by the manager slash owner that they had no idea what you were talking about, and offer you a free 'brownie'
Much appreciated friend. It does suck big time, but I am not letting it get me down. I am reaching out to other places and think that I will be able to hang a few pieces soon. They can keep their brownies, I am not one for mind/mood alterting substances, just not my thing. I have reached out to a few other places and have a couple more to inquire with this weekend.
