No one is going to answer this question for you, the information on the console or even its existence hasn't been confirmed and announced yet outside of rumors about developer kits going out etc.
I'm just waiting on the "when are we gonna drop the PS4?" threads to pop up when Sony decides to announce version 5.
Umm, yes it has. There is no official release date sure. Answering a hypothetical question shouldn't be a big deal, imo, if they plan on being in business that long. We aren't talking years away. Possibly next year.
They're not going to answer your question about whether they plan to launch, how they plan to launch or when they plan to launch on a system that hasn't been announced yet when Sony are very tight on announcements themselves, when Sony officially announce the console that's when you'll start to see announcements. Trust me you're not getting the official announcement you want here.
Agreed. Even if Sony releases a new console next year, DGB will not just automatically jump to the next new shiny console for DCUO; history has proven that it takes a few years for many players to purchase a new console, especially if the old one is working as needed (PS2 anyone?). PS4 was already out a few years before DCUO switched away from the PS3 and even then, many players complained about it because they have not purchased the PS4 yet. If DCUO moved to the new Sony system as soon as it is released it will lose a lot of players as many people will not purchase the new system right away, no matter how much they like to play DCUO. Also, it would take time and money to make such a move, especially if Sony raises its hosting prices. So, I don't think DCUO will have a home with the new Sony console for a good while, no matter when it is officially announced.
It doesn't have to "jump to" the PS5 - it could be available on PS5 as well as current platforms. DCUO was on PS4 the day it launched but still supported PS3 for years after that. There's no reason it couldn't be available on PS4 and PS5 at the same time.
Well, I humbly disagree. I do not think that DGB will want to pay to be on two consoles from the same company; I cannot imagine that Sony will let DGB have the same contract or pay the same price for hosting it's game on 2 consoles. A 2 for 1 deal from Sony? I'm guessing not likely. Also, the game would have to be moved and configured for the new Sony system and DGB's resources for DCUO are slim as it is. So, the choices would be to either provide more content to make more guaranteed money or put the game on the PS5 and HOPE that enough players would buy it to play the game on and make money. My bet is on making more guaranteed money.
I just read this I just read this article (forgot where) but here's a quote that should end this question for good. "When the PS5 comes out, DCUO will be supported" - Joe Sony (CEO of Sony corp) Glad I found that...cause otherwise this would just be another hypothetical conversation where no one will ever give an actual answer. Hmm... Ok, but that doesn't mean that the game will actually be on the PS5 at launch. I'm taking the side of caution until DGB announces that DCUO will be on the PS5 at some future date.
The PS3's hardware design (mostly memory) limited what Daybreak could do with the game. The PS4 and PC versions of the game are a lot similar. Assuming that the PS5's hardware is mostly speed improvements and more memory, (and maybe a newer graphics chip), then the PS5 could probably run the PS4 version of the game just fine, either in emulation, or natively. Two big reasons that the PS3 were dropped were the cost of supporting it (because of its limitations), and the fact that it just couldn't do some of the things that DB wanted for the game. I'm not aware of the PS4 having those problems, and since as far as I know, the PS5's going to be backwards compatible, both should be easily supported.
This is not true at all. DCUO was out day 1 for ps4. I believe what your trying to say, is they eventually stopped supporting the PS3. The PS4 is year away from that. Lol.
The final nail in the coffin of the PS3 for DCUO was when Sony dropped all developer support... a team of people at Sony who would help you get your code working on the PS3. Given the limitations of the PS3, when that support was slated to go away there was no way DBG could keep the game going on that platform. Attempting to do so would put extensive delays into the delivery of new DLCs... so the smart thing to do was say, "So long and thanks for all the fish," to the PS3.
especially when PS5 is speculated to be backward compatible with the last 3 systems. which i doubt unless they want to compete with xbox but i betting they dont because of ps now
Each PlayStation generation lived a little over a decade. The next generation historically launched at the later middle part of the current gen's life span (PS2 launched at PS1's 5yrs mark, PS3: at PS2's almost 7 yrs, PS4 at PS3's 7yrs). PS1 (11 yrs) - Released: December 1994 - Discontinued: March 2006 PS2 (13 yrs) - Released: March 2000 - Discontinued: January 2013 PS3 (11 yrs) - Released: November 2006 - Discontinued: May 2017 PS4 (5 yrs 4 months at the time of this post) - Released: November 2013 - Discontinued: N/A Sony said PS4 is entering its final phase. Final phase projected to end at Mar 2021. PS4 would be at 7 yrs and 4 months by then. This probably mean fewer new games out on ps4 after Mar 2021 and no longer the strategic focus. This is a soft date, so Sony may still give support (security patches, PSN) to ps4 after Mar 2021. The strategic focus will have shifted to PS5 by then. Daybreak discontinued DCUO support on PS3 (Jan 31 2018) (source). So if Daybreak choose to keep DCUO on PS4, should be around at least 2-3 years --barring any other reasons from shutting down a game. During that time, whether or not Daybreak decides to (start working on) porting a version of the game to PS5 is a clear sign if this game will live past PS4. They do have a cushion, as they don't have to launch dcuo in PS5 at launch (or shortly after). If by 2024 (PS4 goes past 10 years) and still no port, then the writing is on the wall.
