Personally I've given up on DCUO ever having a vast amount of decent styles. I don't understand why every style has to be "themed" to the DLC it is in. I also don't understand why "styles" in general have to be part of bigger DLC. For example the entire slimline set/category within DCUO is so underused it is beyond sad. Rather than having your modelers spend months designing yet again another transformer/rocklord/anime/GI JOE/god knows what armor set to be in an upcoming DLC you could have your texture artist literally bust out tons of re skins of the slimline sets and release it in an update.

Try polling the community on the kind of styles they want rather than just assuming you know. Because this isn't WOW or some sci fi Deus ex inspired mmo. Outside of whats available in the character creator there is not and has never been much comicbook looking styles within this game, unless you count Japanese comics in which case you guys have hit and exceeded the mark.

As someone who references Burne Hogarth's "Dynamic Anatomy" frequently and with 30 years experience as an illustrator for a living, it's easy to take the works of Lee and Leifield and break them apart. Yes, there are some VERY out of proportion body parts, hidden limbs, insanely overused lens flares, pouches galore, giant guns and so on. The same can be said about the twisted Spiderman limbs of Mike Ditko, blocky art style of Jack Kirby, John Byrne's style changing over the years, Frank Miller's harsh dark and light style.

But remember....superheros and supervillains are MEANT to be dynamic in appearance. If the were all 5' 9 " 195 LB chubby folks, would we root for them? Would they APPEAR heroic or villainous? Would all that spandex become an eye sore to look at and make you go "yuck"?

Keep in mind that Lee, Leifield, Byrne, Walt Simonson, Frank Frazetta, Richard Corben and many other artists who styles were "disproportionate" are/were also some of the best known and well payed artists in the comic book profession at the peaks of their careers.

    We all have different tastes...

Hey Jens, this made me wonder. Do you guys ever get any inside scoop on upcoming DC stuff in other media? I know you guys do your own thing and DCUO is it's own universe, but has DC ever contacted you and said "do this" or "dont do this" because of something we want to do in the future?

Do you guys at least get free comic books and tickets to DC movies?

@RapidRay Exactly, everyone has different tastes. I don't read comics so I don't know any artists but looking at Rob's drawings (the top 80 worst total), MOST of them were indeed weird etc but some of them didn't look BAD as in, burn his house down BAD. I draw myself and am trying to adopt a semi-realistic look (final fantasy, drakengard etc kind of styles) but I hate full-on realism (adding gaunt lines in faces, drawing the lips, hand lines etc). It takes a matter of getting used to....

Hehe. That's one way to look at it. :) now, stop trying to moderate me and just go with the flow. ;)

Sometimes, but not that often. In fact, it is pretty rare. Sometimes characters get blacked out for use, but we aren't told why. If you are referring to the "...for now," that is just my Nerdar looking at what Marvel is doing with their movie mega franchise and going to Thanos [not Thanatos, lol]. WB has to be looking at that approach and trying to emulate it. It's just logical they will want to go to a JLA movie once everything is in place, and I would say Darkseid would be the most likely villain to move toward. My Nerdar also says they won't likely make the Forever People a focus when they bring in Apokolips. Call me crazy...but the 60's ended a while ago, and those characters are deeply tied to it. It would be like an Austin Powers movie. ;) yeah baby!!!!

i'm definitely not moderating you. only trying to point out how this type of treatment fosters animosity within the community. my reaction and question here is much like the unicorn trinket reaction. the backlash wasn't because anyone didn't want unicorn trinkets in the game; it was because those upset couldn't believe that something like that got your attention instead of other things that had more support and interest in the community. it's great for community relations to include it, of course. but it also doesn't hurt to pop into those constrictive topics asking for a response and just say "hey it's an oversight and we'll work on adding it", "our licensing agreement won't allow it" or "no promises but we'll look into it"... so that when the community sees discussions like these they don't shake their collective heads. i hope i'm expressing this well. it's not meant antagonisticaly.

While it certainly wasn't necessary for you to extend the list, I do think that it's important to add one particular form of media near and dear to all of our hearts: Video Games.

Over the last twenty years, video game characters have carved out their own slice of the media pie and many young players first meet certain comic book characters through games like Arkham City, Injustice, Lego Batman and ... well ... DC Universe Online. I think DCUO has done an incredible job of introducing characters both popular and obscure and I think that such effort will pay off when it comes to the next generation of comic book readers.

Darkseid has appeared in dozens of games from Justice League Task Force to Justice League Heroes. Injustice for iOS even added him as a card fighter recently (and his Super Move cutscene even has cameos from Big Barda and Lashina) ... so his inclusion is kind of a no-brainer. But from there, the devs have to make a list and then narrow it down to the most Iconic characters to fit it to the limited number of new NPC slots. I already like the list that Jens made on page 12. They seem to have the essentials even though it's missing a few names I'd like to see.

(As an aside, Scribblenauts Unmasked actually did have the Forever People in it. Infinity Man too!)

    I 100% agree.
  15. BumblingB I got better.

Well, the last time I read a comic with the Forever People, they were like the first to die during the Death of the New Gods and Countdown to Final Crisis. Which, wasn't the best crisis story DC has done...

That is moderation. You are telling me how to communicate. It's not a big deal, I'm not actually bent out if shape or anything, but a duck is a duck. :)
