Materials as a color palette is it possible in 2021

With all the new tech out i was wondering if it was possible to place the material inside the color picker, Currently when you apply a Material to a costume piece, it applies its effect to the entire costume piece, What if, in addition to being able to apply the Material to the entire costume piece, you could use the Material effect as one of your four color palette options?. you could even apply multiple Material effects to the same costume piece. It opens to the door to an insane amount of creative possibilities.

This is why we got the chromas in the first place as they couldn't do this with the technology they have currently. I'd like to see it too, but not likely.

They didn't say a graphics update was impossible, they said they didn't have a timeframe for a complete overhaul. We've been getting small graphic updates for a while now.

Oh let me correct myself players said it was impossible with all that scraping the whole game nonsense and was proven wrong unless a dev come here and say it’s not possible it’s possible

It would basically require rebuilding the style system to allow us to put a material in an individual color channel on a piece of gear.

There's a big difference between graphical updates (like creating updated NPC models or more detailed textures for surfaces in game) and a complete overhaul of a core system of the game.

That's why we have chromas, to basically give us the same effect without having to rebuild the style system.

If only you didn't have to be extremity lucky to get them.

Graphics updates have been an ongoing thing, just look at the textures in our costumes compared to what was available early on in the game, or what they did when preparing for the PS4 launch. That is vastly different from what we would all love to see as far as materials and color palates. If they were already there, wouldn't we have already seen something by now?

A new investment company owning Daybreak doesn't change what would have to be done to accomplish this. Sure, it's possible the investment company said "go ahead and hire as many people as you need to work just on this one thing, while the people you have continue to do their normal jobs", but it would still take a significant amount of time to accomplish. In all likelihood, recreating the style system from scratch would also require at least some work on every style. We're talking about more than a year of work from a team of people dedicated to this change, and none of their effort would turn a profit for that whole development time. Not to mention the fact that this wouldn't be something they could charge for directly at the end of the day, this would completely replace the existing style system (if that's even possible). So they would have to do additional work elsewhere to make up the costs for this work.

It'd not possible (still) as of this writing. This is what we all have wanted since the very first material. Unfortunately that is still something that can't be done. In the meanwhile we have the next best thing, Chromas. Yes, it's not the same thing...but it's all we have until such a time comes when they can make it happen.

Yes...and notice, they talked about that one. Have they mentioned anything new on the whole materials thing?

If you haven't noticed from several previous discussions there is a SIGNIFICANT difference between what they can do for NPCs and what they can do for player customization. For NPCs, what they want is built into the static model when they make it. For character customization, they have to modify systems to allow something, and some times (as is the case here) the only way to get something to happen would be to recreate the style system from the ground up with this in mind. While it would be nice, there's simply so much work involved that this would likely never happen.

But there is one thing you can be sure of, whatever the unannounced project is at the Austin studio, they will be taking feedback from this game, where it went, and things that they would like to do but can't (due to how the game was built) and will apply those lessens learned to development of the new game (where appropriate).

Charon didn't give an affirmative that we were getting a second accessory slot, he said they were talking about if it is possible without causing issues which would require testing.

I have this strong feeling that you haven't seen the Cosmic Chroma Material from the recently departed Booster Bundle. It can do stuff like this. Unfortunately, as Stealthblue pointed out, they can't give us that option to freely place the materials where we want. The closest we can get to that is with the various Chromas that we have gotten and continue to see. Here's an example:


The best we can do is get creative with what they can give us. Yes we would all love better, more freedom to use materials in a better way and all that...but that's not possible at this time. If they tell us otherwise, great. Until then, this is it.

Just using it as a example, also you guys aren't devs you don't know what your talking about as evildeed pointed out things change such as technology, company, devs themselves change or leave, you never know until a dev answers.
