I'm sorry, but Disney should have rebooted the Original Star Wars and then created a new story.

Here goes....(gulp, can't believe I'm saying this out loud) let alone to my peers. I...did not think the original Star Wars trilogy was all that. (ducks gun fire and throwing stars.) Here me out. The concept and mythology were outstanding but the delivery was mediocre to me and this is coming from a guy who grew up during the time it was be aired on t.v. for the first time. I don't know if I was too young at the time or what but I thought the movie was very long, very slow, and not very action packed. If not for the glow of the light sabres, which I guess was cutting edge at the time, my siblings and I had more exciting sword fights with the cardboard cylinders that were left over after all the Christmas wrapping paper was used up. At the end of the day, when Star Wars was on the air, I changed the channel.

Now I'll admit that The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi were much better, but due to the IMO unimpressive execution of the first one, I never became a fan and thus the other two movies had to work their way up from a D grade for me. They did and got a respectable B to B minus. However, even as a kid I could sense that when I watched Star Wars I was watching a low budget movie, even for its time.

What truly made me a fan of the series was (sigh, may as well tell it all) the Phantom Menace and SWOTOR. It wasn't because the story was that much more interesting in Menace but rather because its political manipulations and fight scenes kept me far more glued to my seat. Add to that the fact that the technology had advanced, the budget was far greater, and the stunt people, I guess were more skilled and the only flaw the movie had was Jar Jar. To tell you the truth I even liked the new trilogies over all story arch. Though it wasn't told as well as it could have due to extra scenes that were meant to sell video games, it was basically the story of a heroes fall from grace, and corruption in politics. I felt the acting was no better or worse than the original, and say what you want about the guy who played Anakin, he could look sinister when he wanted to, especially in Episode 3, and you cannot tell me that you didn't want to see the Empire hunt down the last remaining Jedi.

This is why if anything needed a reboot, it was the original trilogy. If Disney had taken the opportunity to reboot it, they could have used the first episode to tell the story of the hunt for the last Jedi and Obi-Won's attempts to hide Luke and Leah in the first one. segued into the original first episode with a new cast and technology and stunts actors who would not make it seem as though the force got watered down to two guys clubbing each other daintily, as the first episode does now, and really make the last battle shine. As it stands, if you watch the action scenes in the original trilogy and the action scenes in the new trilogy, you'd wonder what the hell Yoda was teaching Luke out there in the swamp, and exactly how old were Obi-Won and Darth when they were fighting. In the new trilogy young Obi Won, Darth Vader and Yoda were all flipping, doing feints, and sweeping the floor and what not. They could also focus on the battles that did not involve the Skywalkers that must have been going on throughout the galaxy at the same time among other rebel groups and introduced new heroes and villains to add to the lore.

I think Disney missed the boat on this one and that a reboot could have kept people coming back for more for 9 episodes if they simply polished up the original with a new cast, better affects, a richer array of characters, and a deeper story. With todays tech a reboot would outshine the original so long as James Earl Jones was still the voice of Vader. Yeah the die hard fans would scream murder, but if done right, it would be epic.

Seriously we need a movie with Star Wars The Old Republic way back then OR A Yoda origin. :D

As a kid I saw the original Trilogy out of order. I first saw Empire in the theater and that was enough to hook me. I remember me, my brother and every other kids re-enacting the light sabre fights in the parking lot.
I later saw A New Hope on VHS and while it WAS slow for a kid, the love I had for Empire got me through it. All the back story fueled my love for the series. To me, Empire is the best of the entire Star Wars saga.

So, I see your point that the kids brought up on Clone Wars and spastic cartoons could stand to get a remake. But where does in end? You remake the 1st trilogy and the next generation of kids will complain about the prequel set being "slow and boring". SO do you just keep remaking these over and over again?

Also, I kinda think you missed the point of the original trilogy. The badasses are all dead EXCEPT Vader and the Emperor. That's kinda the point. Luke is the new hope. And he gets half ***** training from old retired Jedi's. If you've seen Jedi you know that Darth was OLD and broken inside that suit. And when you go for years getting your way by force choking people, maybe you fall out of practice. Obi-wan was like an old, non-practicing priest by the time he was teaching Luke. But it's part of the overall story seeing how low the mastery of the force had come from its great pre-Clone War heights.

I say, let's not touch any of the six movies that we have (even though I wouldn't mind a Gungan retcon). Disney should just barrel on into the future of that universe. The kids of today will get all action and special effects they need with these new movies. The ones that want to know the history will go back to the old movies and get a greater sense of this universe the Lucas (and now Disney) put together

I'm a nearly life long fan of SW and consider myself apart of the original fan base. I do agree the quality of writing and development wasn't all that great but a reboot isn't necessary and would really just muck up things.

Just a clarification to the "New Hope" battle between Obi-Won and Vader on the Death Star. You were dealing with an old, out of practice Obi-Won and a mostly robotic, cumbersome Vader. The prequels make no sense of why Obi-Won is so old (out of practice, sure but not the old thing). But the explanation of Vader is easy, he's a living tank, his weight alone makes the acrobatics impossible and his movement was greatly limited (by both his cybernetics and his burns on what's left of his body), power slashing is all he has left.

I enjoyed the new ones more as well...Jedis are cool as ****, I dont really find myself interested by the old ones particularly due to technical limitations, and my growing up in the 90s

    Plus, this scene:

Thats just terrible...I dont care when it was made, can we get some more creativity there? Jesus it looks like a fake sword fight I would have as a kid only much less inspired

This on the other hand had some balls behind it.

I get why people love them...Its the same as the Christopher Reeve Superman vs Henry Cavil Superman thing, maybe not necessarily better movies, but its what you grew up with

At least wait until you have seen the latest iteration of the franchise before passing judgement. I'm sure there will be enough explosions and shiny objects to keep your interest. (ok that was mean, but my forumite filter isn't working today) As long as Disney realizes that practical FX>CGI, alien languages>accents, and the force is not a measurable thing... then they should be in the clear.

I kinda like the fact it's a somewhat new story. That way if it blows, I can use the fact that it was done by different people to pretend it doesn't count.

Fun fact: Did you guys know the same guy that did the voice of Miss Piggy did the voice of the original Yoda? Frank Oz :D

Yeah. It's Disney guys, have some faith. When they put their minds to things, it's usually a success. I mean, they even had a hand in Pulp Fiction. No joke.

In a way, the OT has already been rebooted. The differences between the Special Editions and the original releases are pretty significant, biggest example being the Han/Greedo cantina scene (and no, I'm not getting into THAT argument LOL). To paraphrase Obi-Wan, it all depends on your point of view. ;)

Reboots aren't always the answer, especially when it comes to Star Wars. Going back to the Special Editions, look at how much some fans have gone ballistic over the changes to those movies. I cannot see rebooting the franchise at the OT going over well at all.

Even with the flaws, the OT does work. No need to reinvent the wheel.

Heck, it goes to an even more practical matter. In filming, you had an actor who some might consider to be in the "elderly" category fighting a 7 foot tall man in a bulky costume that (more than likely) hampered his movement AND vision. Without CGI, you're pretty much going to get what we saw on screen.

I loved the original movies. I was in middle school when the original one (Ep 4) came out.

Now, not to offend anyone, but:

I always felt like Harrison Ford was kinda "phoning it in". He has no enthusiasm for the role.

    AND

George Lucas needs to be kept as far away as possible!

The constant plot holes in the new ones took me out of it. As good as the special effects were and the action scenes were, they didn't make up for massive plot holes, contradictions, or that crappy romance movie that had a few action scenes spliced into it.

"Only a Sith deals in absolutes." Did the person writing that line for Obi-wan somehow not realize that in itself was an absolute statement? Not to mention it completely goes against the whole "do or do not, there is no try" speech Yoda gives Luke. Seriously, there are so many poorly written lines.

For me, I'm taking the wait and see approach to these movies. I think Disney can make a great movie if they let star wars be star wars by not interfering too much.

If they filmed all parts nonstop the way they did LOTR and the Hobbit they could have a movie out every year and avoid the problem of their new actors aging out. That would also avoid the 2033 end date.
