I don't understand why people talk negatively about players that switch to "flavor of the month" powers. Unless you're worried about dots overwriting, why care what powers other people are playing? I get the feeling that some people feel that since they've stuck with a power through its ups and downs, they deserve to play it more than someone who switches to it right after it gets updated. Most people like to try out the shiny new toys. Most people also want to be the best they can at their role. I'm just not understanding the negativity, unless you're worried about dots. "FotM" players are supporting the game every time they switch powers. Yes, i switched to quantum after the update
They purposely make powers better than others to sell tokens. When people switch it makes what you have been playing deprecated. To stay competitive others must buy tokens. In a player community that is so quick to kick low numbers this is A terrible system.
Couple reasons: 1. DoT overwriting. Luckily, quantum does not suffer from this. 2. Selective choosing of DPS. Certain powersets are not being included in high end raids.
I agree that the devs buff powers intentionally to sell respec tokens. I can also see the issue with pugs only wanting the "FotM" powers. I just dont understand the negativity toward the players themselves that switch to these powers. Unless it's about DoTs like you said.
I picture it like this. If you don't pay attention to sports this is gonna go overtop of your head. Some people can't stand when "bandwagon" fans start coming out of nowhere when a sports team who's been so bad for so long starts winning. For sake of argument lets use the Heat for example, when Lebron James said he was leaving to go play in Miami, a whole swarm of people who didn't care for that team, began to like that team because they were literally Steam Rolling through all the other Nba teams made 4 appearances in the Nba Finals and won 2 championships out of those four. Once Lebron left to go back to his former team, many predicted the Cavaliers will be the new "Steam Rolling team" so they followed suit, proof of this is that the Miami Heat's twitter page lost literally millions of followers and the Cavaliers gained millions of followers. People just don't like other people bouncing back and forth through whats the best at the moment, and quit frankly it IS annoying. Its not a perfect analogy but i hope you see the similarities. Nobody likes a bandwagon its just a common thing in life.
Yep i can understand the sports analogy. I don't know why other people would dislike it when it doesn't effect them at all though (unless it's DoTs. Why is it annoying?
Some people feel that FotM switchers don't care about anything except what their score looks like. They don't play what they like, just whatever gets them the best numbers. There's probably also jealousy. I can't afford to switch powers all the time, therefore people who do must suck.
For me, its that generally when you run into FotM players, they kinda suck at the power lol. Most of them just see the latest load out video, or read that it is OP so they switch. But they generally know nothing about the power. For instance, I joined a pug Lab group the other day as tank, they were at the first boss when I joined, 1/2/2/3 group. First thing I hear when I join is a couple of them talking about how they switched to quantum, and how they are now "beast" dps. We start the boss, and I will give them that they were the top two dps, but they were barely beating the third dps (rage) and the over all dps from the three of them were absolutely horrible. Paint drys faster then they were killing the boss. Tbh though, I was gonna stay and deal with it, but as an extra pain in the ***, the healers... oh the healers. I'm a 113 ice tank, I have over 30k def, when I block, I have over 70k def. I **** you not, when I was blocking it was everything the two healers could do to keep me alive, and as soon as one died from a new add that spawned (hard to pull quickly when I'm blocking for my life) the other one wouldn't be able to keep me up and I would die. Anyway a little off topic there, but ya, generally FotM players don't know their powers at all. PS. Not saying you don't, just saying most don't.
There is a shortage of roles out there because of FotM. If you look at LFG for 5 to 10 seconds you'll see DPS shouting for everything or need Tank, Heal, or Troll instead. People would rather chase the Scoreboard instead of playing a desperately needed role.
To answer the question you posed in the subject, flavor of the month players are why we keep getting these constant updates to everything and the devs then can't focus on more interesting content nearly as much as they should. FoTM players figure out something is better then they don't say anything and allow it to be abused.
Its because most of them act like the "bandwagon sports fan". In which they brag..and boy do I mean brag a lot. -They don't know what they are doing, just like the bandwagon sports fan, they have no idea whats going om -They watch a video on youtube and just copy and paste, because they are lazy -They don't even try to the secondary role And honestly its just annoying lol, I just can't go into detail I just can't stand any form of bandwagon. I remember seeing someone claim to be a Spain fan right after they won the world cup in 2010, then Germany won it recently and now he's a Germany fan lol like it just grinds my gears.
I dont really care what powers others use, but somekind of balance would be nice. I have never got kicked from being fire so, so far so good.
FOTM players subsidize my subscription with their power respec tokens. Thanks FOTM chasers. Sincerely, dedicated Nature player.
Simply because 9/10 times that same person just switched for 1 reason. So they can top the charts on the damage board at the same time that same person doesnt even have a clue about the support role side of that powerset. FOTM isnt bad, it definately supports the game. However this particular fotm is involved in serveral glitches of raids, exclusion of other dps powersets, and has created a small rift in the community.
I don't mind people switching to whatever power is IN. It doesn't bother me at all. I'm fine with my powers (Mental, Sorcery, & Nature). I don't chase the scoreboards anyways to be concerned about that. But it gets confusing sometimes when we try to invite certain people on friends list to run raids with only to find out that they switched powers/roles. Other than that I'm cool with the FOTM players. . After all my league leader switches powers every other week. LOL
For me it's a combination of the Sports analogy that Juxes posted and also the fact that players refuse to get good at the game and instead leach on to whatever is "over powered". In my experience, power hoppers are usually players who don't know much about the game but will act like the Oracle of all DCUO knowledge and the best players in the game. All simply because they're using a rotation they found on YouTube surrounding hype they've heard about certain powers being overpowered. So it's mainly the attitude that follows a power hopper. I am very grateful for their continued support of the game, though.
Imo fotm hoppers have no skill, and are the same who try to talk down on other players, or will be the first to tell that "it's not the power, but the player" lie.
I hate it with pvp players. All you get in the arenas are FOTM. And usually they don't know how to play...but because its FOTM the have a better chance at winning.. example is Fire Tank. Hard as heck to kill them in 1v1 or 2v2 pvp. But when they try to do PVE content they are horrible tanks. Its also the same with exploit users. They switch to Rifle because the jump exploit. Or Nature for the Bug Acid exploit.
Of Of course you defend fotm players because you're one, of course you're gonna make up bs excuses for them to justify their scoreboard chasing ways 'cause you're one of 'em. I've got £5 saying that op switches to celestial come next game update, and makes the same thread again.
