8. Okay, if it has to be an African animal, it would have to be one that can catch a bird, but can't imagine many that would be able to catch a Haasts Eagle (or know what to do with it if they did )

Good grief...I entirely missed the negative aspect of the shortend name there! Although I strongly suspect that there was no malice intended.

How do you feel about the proposed renaming of a few South Island geographic locations?
What are your opinions on those who would advocate for keeping the existing names?

Considering it is currently 12:41 p.m. on a lovely hot summer day, yes, it really is bright out

Considering majority of them are simply being changed because they are Maori names (even though very few Maori were even in the area), it's simply giving the pricks everything they never deserved or owned (every damn year, they are back with that damn Treaty begging for more, more that they never had and that their Chieftains {who would have been the ones who 'owned' it anyway} signed away, not just leased to the Europeans!!)

"<censored>head", "<censored> Hill" and "<censored> Stream"? Where <censored>? I saw Darkies Creek and Darkies Terrace Track on the map as well, but they don't seem to be part of the proposal.

According to Stuff (which is possibly about as reliable as Wikipeida), the proposed names are based on the native trees in the area, and a species of trout.


Although honestly, if it wasn't on Stuff, I wouldn't have ever known about the names.

Apparently, 'Darkie' was the name of guy those places were named after, not the colour of his skin

Not sure about the <censored> names, but have an idea, what people have to understand, back then that name did not have the negative connotation it has now

One name would personally like to see corrected: "Stewart's Island", not "Stewart Island"
