EG7, Sell DCUO to WB Games

EG7, the fact most of DCUO's revenue goes to licensing is a clear indication that this IP is not profitable for you as a business entity. So sell it. With DC Comic's new cinematic universe on the horizon in conjunction with the animated movies and shows coming to HBO Max it is clear that this product can be profitable in the hands of WB Games.

It's almost apparently obvious. From the perspective of WB Games there is almost little to no further investment to be made after the acquisition since the game itself is developed excluding whatever nuances the players request.

You could, end the life of this game because if is not profitable in your hands or, sell it, recover some loss and it in turn can not only become profitable for owner of the IP but grow in conjunction with the future interest that DC Comics and it's characters will inevitably generate with what's to come that James Gunn is creating for the brand.

    1. Let it die since it is not profitable because of licensing fees and eat the entire investment loss. This also just gives EG7 the reputation of a company acquires products with future potential but fails to deliver. This is important seeing how the customers within the gaming community are finally holding Companies liable for their practices as of late. The blanket no longer grants immunity, gamers have a choice and they are voting with their wallets like never before. Corporate Reputation now matters.

    2. Sell it to WB Games for a lesser loss and let the product become profitable in the hands of the company that actually owns the IP.

In closing, though you (EG7) may have factored in the momentum of sales that may be generated within the coming years of movie releases, you cannot fully take advantage of it with your current culture of thought. The nature of your business model was to communicate to the customers that their product has an expiration of which in turn has been directly impacting whatever potential revenue you could have generated during this period. If we were to take that as an example of the typical train of thought/strategy of the minds behind EG7, then not even the future interest in DC Comics movies, shows and their marketing could benefit DCUO in your hands.

You can have this one for free. Make it count.

    Sincerely,
    JustPeaches

WB would quite literally be no different from EG7. Have you seen the state their games are in lately?

They're terrible, I know. The difference is they'll have little to do in developing DCUO since it already shipped over 13 years ago. One idea with WB & DCUO is being able to cross market it with DCUniverse Infinite and even potentially port it to phones. The point is, DCUO has 13 years of life into it and that makes it a proven product but it's treated like a red headed stepchild in the hands of EG7 because they detest the licensing fees that limit it's profitability for them. DC Comics is an established brand and if WoW is still going then this can too but in skilled hands.

They said in their presentation that DCUO will be kept on life support and so it is and that's probably for resources/limited money/small team and so on, reasons. I don't understand what's the point of them still holding on to it, they should sell the game off long ago.

We all know how this drama will end... and it won't be like in a fairy tale where every story has a beautiful ending.

...In their hands this game will close its doors.

and yet games like FF XIV Online (2013) yet also a license or Guild Wars 2 (2012) we succeed in proving that if a studio has
still passion and love for their game the success is, even after difficult phases crossed, it is possible to straighten out the bar Guild Wars 2 is the proof of this, the rewind his last 2 years is phenomenal, it is enough to be simply listening to its community thing that never was able a single holder of DC Universe Online and the result now everyone knows it, although, I had as feeling that before EG7 buys the game, it started to be done although still with difficulty, but there was a beginning, EG7 killed it a blow of the club since Mepps left and since, we lose enormously on the game...

EG7 is a bad thing for DCUO, that it gives the game because we see very well that they do not have the capacity to hold a license game!

The issue here is that even though Warner owns DC, the company within Warner that owns the IP (DC Comics) would not be developing the game themselves, so licencing would still be a thing. DC Comics needs to get it's value from the deal, as none of the revenue from DCUO goes directly to DC other than through licencing.

I used to work for a company that was owned by a larger group, and other companies in the group used our services. They didn't get them free. If they did, we'd have gone broke. They got a flat discount, which was negotiable, but we couldn't provide services for nothing. Licencing is a service that makes revenue for DC Comics. They're not going to just give out licences for free.

Sorry - that's not how groups of businesses work :(.

My only concern is WB games shut down DC Legends their huge mobile money-making game last year. I dunno if they couldn’t make that work they’d probably have trouble with this multi platform game as is. So yeah I’d be kinda worried about them getting the reigns if that were to happen but who knows?

Anyone think the execs at EG7 are like “You know what, that forum post telling us to sell the company might just be onto something”?

You need to give the new developers a chance to bring the game in a New Direction. if the new team cannot bring the game in a New Direction and keep population active then that will be the last of DC Universe Online. In a live stream the new lead hand had decided not to change the direction of episode 48. instead they plan on changing the leveling system that alone is going to be a very big leap in a New Direction. The leveling system as it stands is clamped leaving the player base a very short-term one also known as casual. Once the progression is gone there's no reason to stick around. Relaunching a few of the progression systems will absolutely turn the game around for the better. Relaunching the progression systems is an inside job there's no revamp or investment needed for such a thing just a lot of testing. Eg7 will not invest in DC Universe Online the direction we have right now is a casual one. the player base isn't sticky it is short-term eg7 sees that as fragile and that's not a good look for DC

I absolutely agree that not a single person employed past this website will ever see what I write or you but the fact we are customers is what gives us the immediate right to voice our opinions even if it's mostly venting. I'd rather say something than not.

I've played so many games in the past 13 years and the only one besides Skyrim that I revisit is DCUO. It is gold but in competent hands. But like you sarcastically implied, what I write may fall on deaf ears but to me it matters and it's closure to some extent that I was able to say something. Be constructive and offer something of value or be sarcastic but anything is better when it means something to you.

I do wonder the what the goal is when you openly admit that you're keeping on of your games on life support. At that point just shut the game down or sell it no ?

Oh good, another masochistic addict that cant quit so they'd rather see the game shut down completely just so they can't shoot up that launcher again. So lets break down everything here.

Quarterly earning reports show the game fairly consistently earning 8-12% profit margin. Where are you getting the "not profitable" from?

Except the entire cost of buying a game that currently generated approximately $1m per year, with an average of 8-12% profit margin.

DCUO is a source of sustained revenue for EG7.. again.. where are you getting no profits and losses from?

Still is profitable, still basing your entire wall of text on a lie.

Pure speculation. They could also ruin it faster.

In closing, you've made even more assumptions that are pure speculation(and appear to be based exclusively on booster bundles and time capsules?), then try to suggest this game will fail in their hands no matter what.

Free is overpriced for what you have provided.

I hope Angeliana sees this. I hope Kendricke sees this. Because this is one of the biggest problems the DCUO community has to deal with. A very vocal group of people that genuinely believe the game needs to shut down, and continue to say so both on the forums and in-game. The negativity fatigue is real, and highly demoralizing especially for newer players or returning players that have been gone for years just to return to a community saying "#$%^ this game it needs to die" while actively playing it. They will never be happy and they will continue to have a negative impact on the community. The game software continues to only be half the issue with the downward trend to players.

I like your optimism, but WB’s greed knows no bounds. We’re talking about a company that turned Mortal Kombat 1 into a live service game, and rushed it’s release well before it was finished, hence why it was and still is so buggy. We’re talking about a company that admitted they’re going to continue making their games live service despite them seeing failure in it’s success. DCUO is a niche game, and WB usually sets its sights on games that can be mass marketed, i.e., fighting and shooting games. Besides, DCUO is on the cusp of death. It’d be a huge risk to invest in a game like this.

All of these progression systems are part of the reason why this game is in such a sorry state in the first place. It takes one or two years to level up artifacts without money, there’s over 800 skill points, and then there’s allies, augments, etc. New players just don’t have time for that. CR is one of the easiest things to level up, but what’s the point of leveling your CR up if you’re still going to be behind in some areas? Developers tried to pull new players in with CR skips, but it doesn’t really help them in the end. It just gets them kicked from instances because they don’t know what they’re doing. Also, most veteran players hate when other players get things easier because they invested so much time and money into it already, which is why a lot of them are so adamant about keeping you know what. If any progression system is changed to be easier they will not like it.

Or if you are heavily invested in this game and want it to last for long, why not buy it yourself? Sell off anything of value you have, crowdsource for the rest, pool up everything and buy it from EG7. If you are suggesting ideas to 2 companies (EG7 and WB) to do as you wish because you feel it's a gold that needs to be handled the right way, why not be proactive by taking action? You invest everything you have since you know best how it should proceed and take the necessary step. I will invest $100 in crowdsource to keep it alive.

All the forum warriors have all kind of suggestions on what the game should do (Stat clamp, Episodes, Powers, Arts) but they don't deal with the amount of issues the company faces to deliver what they do. They think if the company does as they wish, it will make profit. But can they give assurance it would? No. Can they give a loan to the company in order for the change they ask for to be delivered and expect to be paid back when it proves to be success? No. It's all just wishes they have that they expect the game company to do. Every game (even WoW) have it's own naysayers that will complain about something they don't like.

Let's just enjoy what they deliver, tell them IF there's a bug in what they delivered so they can fix it and HOPE they will satisfy some of their wishes IF they can. Because we don't know. Not just make outragous demands like stop the game or sell the game or give the game to my grandpa.

Just venting my frustration at these demands. Peace.

Those elite players you speak of are no longer going to get what they want. Those elite players and exploiters those pay to win player base people you speak of. Are no longer the direction the Developers are going to take those are not the games target audience any longer. As you can already tell eg7 is not investing in dcuo because the game caters to pay to win and exploiters it leaves the game fragile and casual. This means ur player base becomes short term

So you think they will sell the thing that makes the most money for them, and costs the LEAST money to develop (seems like 0$ some days)?

    Doubtful, but go for it.

While the whole cross promoting across multiple media mediums sounds great, I saw first hand with Marvel's Avengers how that can go terribly wrong. When that game shut down there were a bunch of characters somewhere between 50%-90% completed (according to data minors) most of which were part of the various shows released on Disney+. It's pretty obvious to anyone following the "data mining leaks" that they were working on characters to release with the shows and then when one deadline got missed they went on to the next, then missed that deadline, on to the next, so on and so forth. So all that work was done and wasted with nothing added to the game to show for it. And of course, the main campaign centered around Ms. Marvel (Kamala Kahn) and her show didn't come out until two years later and their first expansion character, Kate Bishop, didn't see her show come out until a year and a half later. Obviously Covid was a (hopefully) once in a lifetime industry disruptor that threw production schedules in to complete disarray. But still, it shows the difficulty in lining that stuff up because in this life, s*** always happens.
