DC Comics Plans Black Lightning TV Series

    A Black Lightning TV series is in the works from Greg Berlanti and The Game’s Salim and Mara Brock Akil

    Black Lightning may be the next DC Comics character to get his own television series. Deadline today reports that a Black Lightning TV series is in the planning stages and is currently looking for a small screen home. DC’s Greg Berlanti (producer on The CW‘s Arrow, Flash, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow) is working alongside The Game and Being Mary Jane‘s Mara Brock and Salim Akil to develop the series.


    Black Lightning, created by Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden, made his first appearance in 1977’s “Black Lightning” #1. The story follows Jefferson Pierce, a former Olympian, who was secretly born with the ability to create and manipulate electromagnetic fields. Although he had abandoned his hometown in Metropolis’ Suicide Slum after the murder of his father, Pierce returns there with his wife and daughter, taking a job as a high school principal. It is after losing one of his students to the gang violence that threatens the city that Pierce decides to take advantage of his powers. Adopting the identity Black Lightning, he becomes a costumed superhero who goes on to serve as team member of both the Outsiders and the Justice League.


    Black Lightning has never before appeared in any live-action DC Comics adaptations. He has appeared in a number of animated projects, however, voiced by the likes of Levar Burton and Blair Underwood. He also made a memorable appearance in a 1992 Saturday Night Live sketch, played by Sinbad. Airing just after the iconic “Death of Superman” hit the stands, the sketch sees Black Lightning attempting to crash Superman’s funeral. You can watch the full sketch on NBC‘s official SNL site.

    Not to change the topic but I just glanced at the title of the thread for a sec and thought I saw that DC was going to bring a Black Dynamite live TV series :eek: but I calmed down and saw Black Lightning which I could support as well.

    My first thought on seeing it was the similarities to the High Voltage chest from the Central City vendors, this one's just a bit more glowy. LOL At least on that front it shouldn't be difficult for players to replicate that look in-game.

    Not bad. So this is the CW / DC's answer to Marvels Luke Cage, lol. I'm interested to see the show but as what was posted in another thread, the showrunners behind Black Lightning said it will not be within Earth 1 aka where Arrow and the Flash reside but of course he'll join the gang during the crossovers
