A little too much "maintenance"?

They have done it so far (almost) every day since launch. There was a time we had 2-3 days without restarts and I remember a time they were like 30 minutes but it only lasted for a while.

Now, I have no idea why we have daily restarts and why they were extended back to daily again after the quote above, this isn't a thing in any game I know (in any engine) that launched after/with the PS3/Xbox 360 gen.


It seems meaningless for some, but we get about 24 days of total downtime a year and many play on different timezones or have to work on a bad time, so I have no idea why getting rid of the daily restarts or reducing them isn't top priority (According to steam charts, the difference between peak avg players and right before restart avg is about 50%, but that's still a lot of players).

Why should they hire more staff? They don't have people locked up somewhere turning cranks or on mousewheels keeping the servers running. Staffing has nothing to do with server restarts, and hiring people they don't need, won't change the fact that their servers need to be restarted daily.

All games/servers have restarts and downtimes. Nothing has a 100% uptime in tech. It's a standard in the industry. Complaining about a daily server restart that has been a thing since before 99% of players have been playing (so they should be familiar with it regardless of the time it happens) is silly to put it mildly.

Naw bro all games don't got daily restarts. I play rpg games all the time from pc to console and dcuo is the only one I play that have daily restarts. Not even division or destiny have daily restarts. But on the other hand this is a old game so it's that also lol.

No point was missed. You told someone to stop staying up the early hours of the morning gaming. Full stop. You can disagree with him that more staff needs to be hired or that he might of been ignorant to the fact they restart daily. But to just assume they were only up that early because they were staying up all night was uncalled for and it made it sound like you weren't aware other people have only that time to play.

As far as the OP. Yes they've always had daily maintenance. And no none of us truly know why exactly daily maintenance is needed for them as opposed to taking more time in between them. But they obviously need them daily for a reason. I dont think hiring anyone else would remedy this.

Yeah sis, console games and single player non-persistent world games definitely don't have daily restarts. You're on the money here for sure. I encourage you to look a little further into the topic (research MMOs and "server restarts" specifically) instead of sharing your feelings into the void of the internet.

This appears to hit a little close to home. You seem to have felt like I was personally attacking your playtimes from this reply. Not to worry though, I wasn't replying to you. So, yes, you did miss the point; full stop. Let's break this down for fun:

Karen has some half baked ideas about how this works.
1) Oh several times a week. For a long time too. This is an implied statement of familiarity and authority on the topic. But since it's obviously incorrect and uninformed it illustrates the opposite and tells us she's never been on for a full week apparently in all the time she's been playing.
2) Karen hasn't played enough to know restarts happen every day and not just on Tuesdays. So, she plays mostly on Tuesdays but if she plays other days, she doesn't play enough to realize the game's schedule on the other 6 days of the week.
3) The other 5 days of the week also start the same, which she should be aware of if she's been playing a fair amount -- which we know she hasn't been.
4) This is where she calls the manager. "As a member, I'm paying for all this downtime [and I want my money's worth]." and she also manages to essentially call the Devs lazy by indirectly implying the game is broken and poorly managed to the point they need to do hiring to satisfy her expectations of the game's uptime.

From her original 4 points, we can figure out that Karen is playing casually only a few times a week, mostly Tuesdays, not at the times restarts are typical for their region. Which also suggests, shorter play periods BUT a recent uptick of playtime due to increased freetime (it is a pandemic after all so this is natural). And Karen really feels entitled to that extra 7ish hours a week of playtime she's been at work or asleep for until recently.

I told someone that if they were going to make [uninformed] ridiculous incorrect conclusions and assumptions about the game's server systems and procedures, the staff's work ethics and professional competence, they were making themselves a target for reciprocal criticism and scrutiny.

There are plenty of things the Devs and the game can be criticized for fairly. To do that, the person has to actually be familiar with both the Devs and the game. That's not our OP, Karen sadly.

There is nothing to hit close to home as I never saw it as an insult but as just a blanket statement that didn't take some things into consideration. So that's weird. And despite this long winded response, I still stand by what I said. Was a bad look. Not interested in having a debate over if you think my opinion was right or not. That's how you came off to me. Good luck with that I guess.

Never asked for a monologue. I gave my opinion on what you said. You're free to respond however you like as am I. Whether that's one word or 100. The exchange has already occurred. Opinions were shared. Length of posts are irrelevant. I don't need to write paragraphs to express my opinion. People can use the forums to write one post and leave or write 100 and have a debate. Your statement above shows an abhorrent level of ignorance, you're assuming the restart happens at the same time for everyone, early thereby stating that if the end user spent more time sleeping instead of gaming until the early hours they'd care less.

They made me laugh hence my first response in this thread because it was a case of you having a dig at the OP but based on horrible assumption and you know what they say about assumptions

The reality is your 6am might be someone else's 3am and someone else's 3pm, someone is going to be more annoyed by restarts than others because it more greatly impacts their reasonable gaming time, not their unreasonable desire to do all nighters.

By all means though continue to backpeddle, I don't really mind what you originally said but let's not pretend it wasn't just a little silly lol
