They really ought to go the old school AOL route. Once a toon is deleted, the name can only be released after a 6 month period. So that means if you were to delete your toon, you have that same amount of time to recover it.

To prevent hoarding, tie the deleted names to purchased character slots on the account. You delete a character, you lose a slot.

If someone thought of a name before you too bad thats life just make another name. Besides they DO name reclaims so just wait for the next one if you need the name so bad. Theres lots of ways to spell batman such as 8atman, batman2020, batman 2021, batman eatmyshorts, batman123 etc.

Edit: There should also be a deleted account minimum. Once you go past that threshold, the toon along with it's name ends up in limbo until the next 6 months. That means, you will no longer have the opportunity to recover it.

They need a name wipe for all inactive accounts.

Think harder. There are a jillion possible great names that are variants on a power or theme or idea.

The only people who have trouble coming up with names are those with no imagination who can't think of original names but instead are so desperate they need to copy existing names exactly.

Got an idea for a character? Tell it here and I'll give you five possible names for each character. Ready, start, go!

    It's called "using your brain."

    Failing that, a thesaurus.

What if your super-special-creative-genius names are neither inspiring nor original? What if your bar for a 'decent name' is a LOT lower than mine?

It's all very subjective. And some people weigh the importance of a good name heavier than others.

Your take has a 'let them eat cake' quality about it.

Keep generating more. The possible combinations of possibilities are close to infinite.

People in fantasy/science fiction settings are supposed to have imaginations. Mindlessly making a cookie-cutter duplicate of a famous iconic heroes requires all the creativity of a turnip.

People can try stretching their brain; it's good for them.

Got a theme in mind? Look at dictionaries and book for variations on the concepts involved. Look for puns. Look for wholly new names based purely on power/role concepts. And so on.

Writers keep writing new books. Ideas do not run out. Anyone can use techniques to generate potential ideas even if their own imaginations are blank slates.

It is not hard. As I said: gimme a concept and I'll give you fine possible names. (I'm not going to go to the trouble of checking if they're already used in-game because that would be tedious.)

Why not have a system that ties in your characters into a sub section under 'Family' name. So for example, XXY is their main 'Family' name but it allows for them to create multiple names like A, B, C. When in-game it'll show A, B or C but under inspecting of that player it'll also list their main 'Family' name.

This way you could have people all use the same name if they wished but under the hood it'd be tied to their main account.

I am all against any further Official name reclaims, all they ever did was create a shady name selling-business among the playerbase, where you're likely to be subject to scamming.

Most people who whine about names at this rate are too caught up in the silly OG name-meta anyway, names of which will be taken by someone as soon as they get freed up, resulting in somebody else coming right back here screaming for yet another namw reclaim.

Because it isn't NEEDED at this time. They will do it again when they deem it necessary, and not at the behest of the playerbase.

Name selling is as big as it is BECAUSE our current system creates scarcity.

The demand for good names is greater than the supply. If the 'name trade' bothers you, it will only get worse without a reclaim.

Why shoot down MsTickle Fate's offer off-hand when there is ZERO better alternative?

Let's say there's a name reclaim scheduled next week, and the name someone is so desperate for does not free up...then what? That person STILL has to flex a few braincells and come up with something original. And this is the reality that people wanting a name reclaim steadfastly refuse to face. A ridiculously large number of people wanting a name reclaim are going to walk away with NADA!!!!

    Ok, how about a challenge?

Start a new thread that does nothing but offer up available names for the supposed "uncreative" players to take free of charge.

Let's see all these super awesome names! Then let's see who will actually take them and play them.

    Prove me wrong.
  20. Zneeak Devoted Player

You just prove my point as to why another official name reclaim is pointless to the community actually craving better names. The point to free up names surely isn't so that a greedy few can wish to hoard and sell the better names, yet that is exactly what the last official name reclaim came to be about.

So yeah, pointless, unless of course one is to admit that this is exactly why they would want another one, hoping to score some of those "big sellers" currently unavailable to them.
