The Bastion Fleet Carrier. It is the dream that has been both wished and hated by many players and developers. It is the massive ship that is capable of transporting massive platoons and loads of vehicles, and we really don't know when it's going to be released.

Will it be a hard work's cancellation, or a proud release?

Do you think it should be released or not? What do you think should be changed about it? What should be it's key advantages and weaknesses? Do you think DBG is considering to doing anything about it at all? Something tells me it will never be released, but the very unlikely chance of it being released doesn't always mean it's never going to be unleashed into the battlefield.

Let's debate and discuss about it.

Ive loved the bastion from day one of planetside

Make it PS2's version of BF2142's Titan.

A mobile base (though slow) that can either be taken or destroyed.

I don't think it will ever happen. Not because there's anything wrong with the idea, but simply that it's one of those good ideas that gets ignored.

For new players, this was what the Bastion Fleet Carrier might have looked like:

I mean this was from the collection of concept art from a loooong time ago, but there it is anyhow.

So could one work? They have in other games.

Take Battlefield 2142 for example. They had Titans:

Essentially very similar to designs for the BFC. Carried aircraft. Had guns. You moved it around by clicking on a map destination (it's a giant flying megaship... you were expecting a steering wheel?).

The difference was that it was essentially invulnerable except to special anti-Titan missile silos. It was up to ground forces to capture the silos and then launch missiles at the enemy Titan. Eventually the shields would crack, meaning that you could then assault it by infantry or let more missiles do the work.

Of course each team only had one at a time due to the hard vehicle limits of the BF series.

Another game, the Freespace series of arcadey space combat, had many capital ships. These hit hard, had fighter escorts that they would launch, and could take tons of punishment.

On the other hand though they weren't invincible. Individual weapon turrets could be destroyed. Critical subsystems like engines or weapon control could be knocked out. And with enough anti-capital ship bombers they could be destroyed. These AI-controlled ships would generally focus on enemy capital ships while it was your job to keep those pesky bombers away and shoot down incoming bombs Phoenix-style.

Lastly, the Saints Row Daedalus is maybe the least exciting ship of them all. I just threw it in because it does look similar to the BFC. But really it just dies in a cutscene and otherwise has very little impact on the game.

    Looks pretty neat though.

Anyhow, because the BFC is a "Fleet" carrier, that probably also means that we're going to get other capital ships too like destroyers and frigates, right? :D

I have no hope for it.
    We can't have nice things.
  6. Tommyp2006

It was never going to happen, and was simple concept art. Hopes and dreams.

Don't make me remind you how many basic features this game is still missing... And you want a huge flying carrier? What next, space battles?
No, it's never gonnah happen. I know for sure. Even if they wanted to implement it they couldn't because simply being in proximity to that thing would cause your FPS to drop below 0, especially if it could actually move. Too many pollygons.
  8. Villanuk

This is infantryside, so their would be less interest from the Devs. Just like the colossus, both are cool ideas but neither will actually ever happen.
  9. Pikachu

We're 10x more likely to get the colossus than this random concept art.

I played a lot of BF2142 and loved Titan mode and gameplay. It opens a lot of options for strategy. But would the addition of a super-carrier be beneficial to ps2? Probably not in the short term. If it were to see release now, the instant it moved, tons of infantry standing on it would clip through the walls and die or drop to their deaths hundreds of meters below. It would lag the screen immensely, and there might be need for expansions of the drop pod system and such to orchestrate boarding and capturing one, as well as all the coding work that would go in to actually creating and implementing it, designing the interior layout, etc.

Whereas the game is still struggling with not having basic inertia systems to prevent ADAD warping (which would if in hopefully stop all this .75 complaining on the forum and substantially benefit infantry combat) - with the most basic of movement systems still considered a great struggle, have a flying carrier that while moving infantry can walk around on is probably unrealistic.

The game has so many shortcomings that would need to be addressed before something like this could be implemented with a positive result.

    Haha, nice joke!
But, just in case you were baiting people into responding so you have the capability of mocking them won't end well in real life.
  14. Sardunos

Have you seen the state of the game on the PS4? Maybe when they get a decent spawn/redeploy system done and an overhaul of the awful console UI.
  15. Liewec123

maybe it could be a moving base that slowly flys in a big circle over the map, you can only access it by using air vehicles and there could be AA and AV gun turrets and air spawning terminals that the faction who caps it can use.

I think this was a possible alternative to warpgates when the game was still in the design phase, not really a vehicle like the others we have in the game.

But it will never happen, it's a concept they scrapped completely eons ago. It will already be a miracle if we should ever see the Battle Islands and inter-continental lattice. I'd be more than satisfied if devs really will implement what Smed called "Planetside 2.0" by September.

Since this is a discussion thread that has been revived we should use it right?

Best course of action for bastion carriers right now:
Remove them from the game again.
Rebuild them so they arent capable of 400+killstreaks by rightclicking the map.
Dont make them automatic air-ball generators.
Dont get population stuck in Bastions simply because the air-ball is on cooldown.
Make sure people other than the top of zergfits can actually get their hands on it with reasonable efficiency (in fact you could make Bastion Carriers an integral part of continent captures by making one available as the continent opens and during alerts).
Give Bastion Carriers a better role than murder-mayhem machines.
Then when that is done, add them back in again.
